Probably cheap land. My ancestor from Connecticut served in the war on the Rev side; he later moved to the frontier of New York state and then moved to Hastings County for the cheap land. It wasn't much good, so he ended up moving to York County, fought on the British side in the war of 1812 and finally moved to Michigan with his son who fled Canada after joining the wrong side in the 1837 Rebellion. There's a monument to him in Michigan put up by the DAR. Hi, Fellow Listers. Long time no talk. I'm hoping that one of you might be able to tell me why my 3xggrandpa, Roger Merrill, would have gone to live in Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario. He got a pension from the Rev. War, filed the application in Onandaga Co., NY in about 1844? But he was living in Percy Twp. on 2nd and 3rd concession lots from 1797 onward. I'm trying to reconstruct old PAF files, and have the copy of the original RW pension app, as well as tax info and etc. on Roger and family. What I DON'T have is the why. My Patriot came to Canada after the War to be with his Secord cousins and remained in Ontario until his death. Don't forget Laura Secord's Patriot father came to Canada when he became disillusioned with American politics after the Revolution ended. Suggest you check DAR records for Merrill. If listed, for a small fee they will look through his family tree for you and send what they find. It would be interesting to learn why he waited so long to apply for his pension. It might have been he had a young wife and would have liked to leave something for her after his death. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, May 03, 2010 9:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ONTARIO] How might a Rev War vet have come to live in Northumberland Co., Ontario? Thanks Stella Nice to see that you are still around. Mary Tait's death is still a mystery. Her maiden name was Patton [Patten] She came to the USA in 1848 with her husband W. L. Tait. They moved to Fort Erie in 1861 and then to Monck in 1867. 12 members of the Tait family came at the same time along with her brother Robert Patton [Patten]. Robert stayed in the USA longer than the Tait's did but eventually came to Canada too. Hello Heather and all Thanks for the reply Heather but this is the wrong Mary Tait. My Mary Tait was born in Scotland in 1825. She lived Con 1 Lot 7 Monck. She is not on the 1891 census. That is why I am guessing c1890, as she was there in 1881 and for some time after, as my grandmother had noted she had been there in early 1890 when they left for Vancouver. Interestingly, her stepson Joseph is on the same death entry as the Mary Tate that you found. He is listed as Joseph Tate. This has led to some confusion within the family. FamilySearch Indexing is busy transcribing Ontario births, deaths and marriages at the moment. Marriages are at 1924, births at 1905 Halton, 1935 for deaths. Port Dalhousie births may be on a different microfilm reel to St Catherines and this might be the reason. Reels can vary in quality and some may need more technical work done on them first. /cheers Pat On Thu, Apr 29, 2010 at 2:15 PM, gail collins <[email protected]> wrote: > Could it be these indexes are not complete? > > For Lincoln County > Port Dalhousie births are listed > St Catharines are not > > But they are on Ancestry.com > > I believe a few weeks back it was announced > the Marriages and Deaths were on the FamSer site and > I had the same problem - some listed, some not > > And it's not a case of being transcribed wrong. > > > *********** > Ten People All Genealogists Should Follow On Twitter: http://tr.im/hBAy > > Search Ontario Genealogy & Resources at > http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/ > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
Hi, It is Very Possible - that all Indexes are not complete - Perhaps they just released the information already transcribed - and more to come. Transcription depends on Volunteers - Anyone Can Volunteer, - makes the Project go much faster - more information available for all. The webite for Ontario Births and Baptisms, 1799 - 1899 states: "Index to selected Ontario Births and Baptisms. Only a few localities are included and the time period varies by locality. This collection contains 455, 469 records. Due to privacy laws, recent records may not be displayed, The year range represents most of the records. A few records may be earlier or later." From this I take it that there will be more records added to this as they become available. They are asking for volunteers to transcribe records. The best part is that it's free. This website helps explain it. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Ontario_Vital_Records_Index Nat Skuce wrote: > I had luck using wildcards in my search. ie Curr?n > or - leaving out info. ie I was looking for someone who died in 1870 in > Winchester Twp. so I just used that and it brought up all respective hits. > Unfortuneately, I wasn't able to enter a date range, but it wasn't any > trouble doing one year at a time. > > On Thu, Apr 29, 2010 at 9:15 AM, gail collins <[email protected]> wrote: > > >> Could it be these indexes are not complete? >> >> For Lincoln County >> Port Dalhousie births are listed >> St Catharines are not >> >> But they are on Ancestry.com >> >> I believe a few weeks back it was announced >> the Marriages and Deaths were on the FamSer site and >> I had the same problem - some listed, some not >> >> And it's not a case of being transcribed wrong. >> -- Bob === Robert Neil Chatham-Kent, ON [email protected]
I had luck using wildcards in my search. ie Curr?n or - leaving out info. ie I was looking for someone who died in 1870 in Winchester Twp. so I just used that and it brought up all respective hits. Unfortuneately, I wasn't able to enter a date range, but it wasn't any trouble doing one year at a time. Could it be these indexes are not complete? For Lincoln County Port Dalhousie births are listed St Catharines are not But they are on Ancestry.com I believe a few weeks back it was announced the Marriages and Deaths were on the FamSer site and I had the same problem - some listed, some not And it's not a case of being transcribed wrong.
For those who use Ancestry, after using the search engine, you're used to getting at least a few possibilities to choose from, but on the LDS Pilot site, you will find more often, "nothing found"...if what you type into the search engine isn't close to the transcription. You just have to keep trying new things in your search engine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Neil" <[email protected]> To: "ONTARIO LIST" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 28, 2010 2:47 PM Subject: [ONTARIO] FamilySearch website >A whole bunch of new indexes have been just put on the LDS website. > > http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html > > Two of which are: > Ontario Births & Baptisms 1779 - 1899 > Ontario Marriages 1800 - 1910 > > > -- > Bob > === > Robert Neil > Chatham-Kent, ON > [email protected] > > > *********** > Ten People All Genealogists Should Follow On Twitter: http://tr.im/hBAy > > Search Ontario Genealogy & Resources at > http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/ > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

If your "search engine" keyword is the same as a city, town, village, township then please read the valuable tips below: * A. *CONCERN:* If your "search engine" keyword you are using is say: pembrok* then your search will pick up all the pembroke surnames....*BUT* ...it will also pick up all the website pages where pembroke is used as a meta name. * B. *SOLUTION:* Change your keyword to pembrok1 and the search engine will only pick up the gravemarkers with the pembroke surname. * 3. If you don't see a Community and its' cemeteries online...it means a volunteer has not photographed and sent me the cemetery photographs. Can you or some of your family and friends help out by photographing the missing cemeteries....? * * ********************************************* Bye for now.......Murray Pletsch * Cdn Gravemarker Gallery - http://gravemarkers.ca * Ont Historic Gallery - http://rootsweb.com/~cannor *

Hi Don, I was reminded just a couple weeks ago that you need to find "Password Central" on the home page. There will be instructions there to request a list of all your Lists. (I probably belong to over 100.) :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (I thought I had signed up for a "Freepages" account a few years ago. I found out you can also find that info at Password Central. But, I wrote to the Freepages person and found out it was more than a few years ago that I signed up for it and never used it. I updated my account and, when I have time, I'll see if it can at least "start" to use it.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don & Carol Graham" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, April 24, 2010 4:32 PM Subject: Re: [ONTARIO] List of Which Ones I Subscribe
Hello Bonnie, It isn't clear what records you've actually looked at. Did you find what type of grant it was? Have you looked at the Ontario Land Records Index (sometimes called the CLRI) ? The best online guide I've seen for land records is the one on the Ontario Archives site. See http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/guides/pdf/rg_215_grant_to_patent.pdf If this doesn't help, there is a list of professional researchers also on the OA site. See: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/family-history/csg_111_genealogical-resear chers.aspx Also http://www.apgen.org/index.html Joanna > > Message: 8 > Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2010 15:50:16 EDT > From: [email protected] > Subject: [ONTARIO] finding crown land grants > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" > > It has been a while since I posted before and we have let the frustration > subside before asking again. Hello Stella Thank you for replying to my request for help. Yes, I have been searching for a good many years and in some cases I have been successful. I am going to search Ancestry.ca again to see if I can find a marriage. Not too much activity during the summer but had wonderful response to my appeal for help. Hope the sun is shining on you to-day!
