    1. [ONTARIO] Canadian Kilties Band world tour 1908-1910
    2. Joanna Waugh
    3. Hello Janice, You should try a couple of the Hastings County resources where Belleville is located. The hastings county mailing list . http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-ONT-HASTINGS.htm l And the Hastings County Historical Society http://www3.sympatico.ca/nick.white/HCHS/newsletters.html Their Feb 2009 and March 2009 newsletters talks about the band. They also have a forum. There are 2 records relating to your Walter that suggest he wasn't in the band very long. His US WWI draft registration signed 1917 say he was a detective for a detective agency working in Providence Rhode Island. He had 7 years military experience in the artillery for Great Britain. His marriage record in 1913 in Attleborugh, Massachusetts say his residence at the time was Nelson, NZ and he was working as a ---? Officer on a [cruise?] ship. He was a widower at the time of this marriage. 3. Good evening, I am not familiar with Canadian research so I apologise if I am asking in the wrong mailing list. If so, please aim me in the right direction. I am researching my maternal grandfather, Walter Seymour MCDONALD who was born in Nelson, New Zealand in 1886. He apparently joined the Canadian Kilties Band when they toured NZ (in early 1909?) and travelled with them to Tasmania, Australia, Ceylon, India, Burmah, Egypt, Italy, France, Portugal and the UK eventually ending in New York. (This was reported in a newpaper cutting when he returned to live in NZ in 1920). I have found newpaper reports of the time advertising the arrival of the Kilties in Jan 1909. Having googled, I have found that the band was known as the Belleville Kilties Band, under Drum Major Roderick Bain MacKenzie. I would be interested in any information about the band in the period 1909 - 1920. Confirming some if the places they toured would be great. Were they connected in any way to any military regiment? If so did they fight in WW1? An uncle had some recollection of mention that my grandfather was in the Black Watch? Not sure if he meant regiment or tartan? Are there any photos in existence today of the band members which may include Walter Seymour (Hector) MCDONALD? Kind regards Janice Searle Darfield, NZ

    1. [ONTARIO] marriage - possibly Toronto, 1930s
    2. Hi Marsha If you are going to the Metro Toronto Reference Library, have a look at city directories. If the marriage did take place in Toronto, one or both of the individuals might show up in the directories. 3. This is my first posting to the list, I am hoping someone can help with my 'mystery man'. We have a copy of my great uncles Attestation Paper when he joined the CEF on the 6/9/1915 in Ontario. Harry Wallace Hamblin DOB 22/10/1887 Newcastle on-Tyne England, he stated he had been in the Northumberland Fusiliers and gave my Grandfather's name as his next of kin but Grandad never mentioned him so we don't have any other information only that we found him aged six in Tynemouth Workhouse North Shields. On the data base he was listed as being with the 31st Canadian Infantry Battalion. On the Attestation Paper there are 2 numbers, 467181 which is crossed out and 101759, these numbers will not take us any further. My Grandad was born in Northumberland UK. Any suggestions that might help would be appreciated, I have a photo of Harry in WW1 uniform. Jean Hamblin Connor in South Australia

    3. Hello Arnold, Just a thought, but a lot of Home Children (children of unfortunate circumstances that had been brought to Canada from England by such agencies as Dr. Bernardo's, Middlemores etc) signed up for the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WW1. My father in law was one of those children. It might be worth checking out the Home Children data base (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/index-e.html). Good luck. 3. Marsha, I would suggest that you take out a short term subscription to Pages of the Past from the Toronto Star newspaper. People published events such a birth, death, marriage and engagements in those days more than in recent years. See: http://thestar.pagesofthepast.ca/ The cover page has good instructions and offers a free edition for 1945 which is a good one to try out as to how the site works. If you don't have time before your trip to take out a subscription then a trip to the Central Toronto library might work for you. Cheers! 3. Hi Stella, Thanks for your response. This is the service I was somewhat aware of. I checked and the search fee is $15 for a 5-year span -- then the cost of the certificate beyond that. They will search - a few years either side of a given date. ONTARIO Office of the Registrar General ServiceOntario Ministry of Government Services 189 Red River Road P.O. 3. Hi, Thanks for responding. Sorry, I do realize the marriages for those years aren't available as searches. We're leaving for Toronto this weekend and will be in the city into next week -- then will be out of the city visiting cousins. I was thinking more of a library to go through newspapers, in case there was a notice (did something similar in Cleveland and found a key obit, which led to third cousins). So, Central Toronto library? Any other places? Any other resources beyond the Toronto Star? If this fails, I know (think I know) there's a system for a vital records search ($15 )? Then, if the event is found, an additional cost for the certificate? The bride was my father's first cousin, so I'm guessing I'm not allowed to file the application/s? Thanks again, Marsha Stringer (nee MEERE) [email protected] USA   www.bittonfamilies.com  ________________________________________ From: D O' [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, May 11, 2010 10:23 AM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: RE: [ONTARIO] Marriage, abt 1934-1938, Maybe Toronto Marsha, I would suggest that you take out a short term subscription to Pages of the Past from the Toronto Star newspaper. Cheers! 1. [ONTARIO] Hamblin
    2. Brian Gilchrist
    3. Greetings from Toronto: 1. Wallace Hamblin in listed on page 595 of "The Bitter 'n Sweet: the history of Bittern Lake - Sifton District" available online. His named is recorded in a list of those who served in W. W. I 2. Harry Wallace Hamblin received two Land Grants in Western Canada. See the Canadian Genealogy Centre website 3. Wallace HAMBING, age 31, arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick on March 30, 1913 onboard the S. S. Corinthian. Reason was to emigrate to Canada for farming. Church of England was his religion, and the boat sailed from LaHavre, France. 4. His attestation papers were signed at Edmonton, Alberta which is consistent with the above local history and land grants. 5. An "H. W. Hamblin" returned to Canada after the War onboard the S.S. Olympic which sailed Dec. 7, 1918 from Southampton and arrived Dec. 14, at Halifax. He was enroute to his MOTHER in Winnipeg. Not sure that this is the same person. 6. He may have lied about his age when enlisting to make himself a couple of years younger as in checking Civil registration births there is a John George registered in Tynemouth the the quarter ending Dec. 1874, and then there is a Henry (Harry is often an abbreviation of Henry - i.e. the current Prince Harry is Prince Henry) registered in Tynemouth in the quarter ending June 1879. Interestingly in the 1881 census a 2 year old Henry is living with his grandmother Eliza Hamblin in Cullercoats as well as a 6 year old JOHN G. Hamblin living with his grandmother Isabella Moore in Elswick. Did the parents die and left the boys with their respective grandmothers? 7. On the marriage registration of your grandfather John George who is his father listed as, the get the birth registration of Henry in 1879 to see if it matches. I can find not birth registration of a Harry or a Wallace. Hope that some of this helps - keep us posted! Cheers! J. 3. Hello Jean I note from his attestation papers that he actually signed up in Edmonton Alberta. I don't see any records for him in Ontario so it would be better for you to use the Alberta mailing lists once you pinpoint where he was living. Here are some suggestions. 1. Get his land records from Alberta. He is in the Western Land records database for Alberta. See http://abgensoc.ca/ 2, Get his military service records. See how to order a file here http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-130-e.html Good Luck Joanna > Message: 9 > Date: Tue, 11 May 2010 15:15:23 +0930 > From: Henry Connor <[email protected]> > Subject: [ONTARIO] Hamblin > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed > > This is my first posting to the list, I am hoping someone can help with > my 'mystery man'. > > We have a copy of my great uncles Attestation Paper when he joined the > CEF on the 6/9/1915 in Ontario. Marriage records have only be released to 1927 and are only made available 82 years after the date issued: See http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/about/rg_202_vital-statistic-bulletin. aspx Mike More [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Stringer Sent: May 11, 2010 8:27 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ONTARIO] Marriage, abt 1934-1938, Maybe Toronto Hi, Still helping someone else and trying to find his parents' marriage. The information is vague: As noted it was sometime before 1940, probably bet 1934-1937, and probably in Toronto. It's somewhat possible the marriage could have been in Windsor, as the family was there before 1940. I'll be visiting Toronto soon (in the city a few days), and wonder where I could go to try to find this marriage. Any help/directions would be appreciated. 3. Ellen I replied off line to Jean and gave her the address to send to for a copy of Harry's personnel file. Didn't want it going out to the world. Hope she writes and gets the info she is seeking from his file.
