Hi Everyone. Would love to thank everyone who wrote with help on Cooke's Presbyterian Church in Toronto. What a great list this is. Thank you so much Muriel
Thanks Stella - but this could be delicate - hence the reason for being obscure. Hi everyone. I am hoping that some one on the list may have access to Records of Cooke Presbyterian Church , Toronto. I am looking for any records of a Uncle who arrived in Canada from Ireland in 1909. He was living at O'Hara Avenue in 1911. Many thanks. Muriel Donegal Ireland

Hi Muriel: It would help us to help you if you included in your email the name of the person, date of birth, even approx, was he married before arrival, had any kids, etc, etc. Also, could you please tell us exactly what records you are looking for, please? Ontario births, marriages deaths up to certain years are online on Ancestry.com and many of us have subscriptions and would help you out if you were to give the List more info. So even if we don't have access to the church records, we may be able to help you with provincial bmd's, census, passenger lists, etc. Marg in Sunny Alberta On Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 2:02 PM, Murlel Sherlock <[email protected] > wrote: > Hi everyone. > > I am hoping that some one on the list may have access to Records of Cooke > Presbyterian Church , Toronto. > > I am looking for any records of a Uncle who arrived in Canada from Ireland > in 1909. > He was living at O'Hara Avenue in 1911. > > Many thanks. > Muriel > Donegal > Ireland > > *********** > Ten People All Genealogists Should Follow On Twitter: http://tr.im/hBAy > > Search Ontario Genealogy & Resources at > http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/ > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Thanks so much for the information that I have received so far. Re the 1871 census, this is where is starts to get a bit spooky...Harriet and Ellen were married on the same day in 1864 (York, Toronto) and by the time of the England 1871 census Harriet was in England with her husband Robert Braik. So, in theory she shouldn't really appear on the 1871 Ontario census..... I've followed Ellen a bit - her married name was Baker and she appears with her husband in later census records in Wisconsin (I think). Hello I'm hoping someone can help me.here is some background to my request: Mary Ann Campbell (born Scotland 1822) and Leman Smith (born New York 1814 - apparently) were married on 25 April 1839 in Orillia, Simco, Ontario. Leman and Mary Ann had 7 children: Harriet, born/christened 5 February 1840, Penetanguishene, Simco John, born/christened 14 December 1841, Penetanguishene, Simco Mary Ann, born/christened 9 July 1843, Penetanguishene, Simco Leman, born/christened 1846, Penetanguishene, Simco Simco Ellen, born/christened December 1848, Penetanguishene Simco Margaret, born/christened 25 November 1850, Penetanguishene,Simco William, born/christened 1853, Penetanguishene, Simco The family were Wesleyan Methodists and by 1861 I believe that they were in Toronto as Harriet, Mary Ann, Margaret, William and mother Mary Ann are in the Ontario 1861 Census - Census place - Toronto, York, Ontario. I can't find the father, Leman, in this census and it's possible that he may have died between 1853 and 1861. Harriet's sister Ellen was married on the same day has her and her witness was Leman Smith though I think that this is her brother Leman, not her father. Harriet A Smith married Robert Baron Braik on 14 April 1864 in York (Toronto). Robert Braik was in the army and he and Harriet had returned to England by 1871. On the 1871 England Census they have 3 children, Mary Ann, 5 yrs, Catherine, 3 yrs and Ellen, 1 month. The eldest daughter is indicated as born in Aldershot, England so assuming this is correct they had returned to England by 1865/1866. Catherine Braik is my great grandmother. She emigrated to Australia (from what I can see by herself) in 1893 on the ship Taranto. Could anyone give me some pointers on: The possibility and whereabouts of the marriage record for Mary Ann and Leman (25 April 1839). A death record for Leman Smith, (father) A death record for Mary Ann Smith, (mother) Whether any shipping records might be available for Mary Ann's arrival in Canada - I'm assuming that she would have come with her family. Any shipping records for Robert and Harriet Braik leaving Canada. I would be very grateful for any help that anyone can give as I'm a bit stuck on this Canadian connection and would like to research this further. I don't have regular access to Ancestry.com. I obtained the birth information above from familysearch.org. Thanks very much Fiona

Hi Shirl It depends what year you need. Before 1865 Canada did not require that passenger lists be kept. See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/canada/ for a complete list of links to all online sites with ships passenger lists arriving in Canada. Hi Shirl, I'm sure there's more but the best one I've found is www.theshipslist.com You can also go to: http://www.cyndislist.com/ships.htm for a bunch more links. Oh yeah. I've been scrolling through for WEEKS. But they _are_ there. Ancestry Library Edition has most of the lists - but their indexing is bad. wicked bad. All I knew when I started was the year. Nothing else. Found one (and only one) that Ancestry indexed correctly by name. [out of 10, who came @ different times on different ships] sigh. I'm still missing 2 - but they are probably there. So I am working my way through. Take a guess - year, or ship or port. If they give a year of immigration on a later census, BONUS. Start there. If someone ever told a story (my grandma said that Liverpool was a dirty city [we were actually talking about the Beatles <vbeg>] start there. Be prepared to expand out. And sideways. Did they work a deal with the shipping line for the whole tribe to come over at different times?? [this is my latest scenario]. Package Deal! And there they are. Look at their homestead or land apps. Or the dates they supply on a census. You have a window there. Or the agricultural records. When did they show up? OK, trim it bsck. Work it in every direction. OTOH, this site is FANTASTIC. There are lots of ways to get there. <vbeg> Records earlier than 1850 are a real problem. I don't have a lot of encouragement on them. sigh.
