"wearing the green in Calif." I'm Catholic, but I have found the Latter Day Saint's Family History Centers to be a good source of material. I ordered copies of the 1920 census microfilms from them (which have to be viewed in their center) for about $3.25 apiece. They have a lot of census material photographed. As for the 1890 census, I read a very heartbreaking story about it on the National Archives website. It seems that the records weren't immediately destroyed in the fire -- they were for the most part water and smoke damaged and Congress wanted to destroy them right away, but a lot of scholars and researchers and the DAR protested. Unfortunately, about 13 years later, the materials were destroyed and there was no outcry. How sad! As for me, here's my query: I'm looking for information about the parents of my grandfather, Lawrence Jeremiah O'NEIL, born 1907. I believe he was born in Houston (Harris Co.), Texas. He was in the United States Army and stationed at Ft. Crook where he met and married my grandmother. UNFORTUNATELY, another fire (this one in 1972!!!) destroyed military records that might have helped us identify his parents, etc. I believe that his father was William O'NEIL. I'm not sure about his mother's name, possibly Mary or Elizabeth. I'm not sure about the last name: COPELY or COPELYN or something like that.
