Jill, I was never in the Navy but lived in Idaho for 38 yrs. NTS Farragut was a navy "boot" camp (base) for basic training in Idaho near the town of Sandpoint on the shores of the huge lake Pend Orielle (pronounced Pon Da Ray). The base is gone now. I served in several joint commands with Navy people but am not sure of the AS rate, at some periods of time it was an "able bodied seaman" at other times it was an "apprentice seaman". Better find some old Navy hand to straighten that out! The S1c, S2c were seaman first & second class ratings. The Cox was a Coxswain prounced Cox'n. Cox'ns were in command of small detachments aboard the ship, such as signalmen, rudder control (steering), etc. & other small units.
