Well, it certainly all is possible, just as you say. Why wouldn't he be in VA then, I don't believe they went to SC until 1764-65??? Can someone else confirm this?? I would get the early tax list, when Darius comes of age and is named and see who is around named O'Neill or O'Neal, if there are no males then you know his father is gone...... worth a check?
