Sharon, My ggrandfather was born in GA and, if family stories are to believed, held slaves. He was born about 1827 and I don't believe he was first generation. His son was born 1860 and died 1863. The reason I mentioned these names is because of the tradition of naming the first son after the father. Griffin was the first son. Since your family is of NY and Canadian origin, it seems pretty slim that we're looking for the same people. But since one never knows, hang on to my name and I'll hang on to yours, just in the event we can find some connection.
