    3. The NEALS, yes, we are strange ones, Revering those before. We know their daughters, know their sons And want to know much more! We search the lists to find a name, A port, village or town..... We tell the legends, love the fame That passed these genes on down. We read the books, and go on-line To educate and learn, And everday, we get the "sign".... For IRELAND we all yearn. To the green sod, and rocky coasts Thatched homes, plowed fields and mud, Through KISIMUL, with castle ghosts... That still contains their blood. No sept could have more passion, No history more complete, No tartan worn in fashion, No battles, no defeat. Before I say, "A mother, A teacher, sister, wife", I say, "NEAL, an Irish brother", And defend it with my life! Dear List: Are you as geNEALogically insane as I think I am about our heritage? I can't get enough of this....and have promised ME that my next big trip will be to IRELAND. Want to come? It is time................ Amanda

    3. Just wanted to remark that I had heard the "1st to touch the land would rule all of Ireland" version also. I would expect that there should be something, somewhere to back up one of these tales because the "Red Hand of Ireland" is on the family crest. Also - I was wondering if anyone has an explanation regarding two versions of the O'Neill family motto: I'm doing this from memory so bear with me please! One is Lamh Dearg Abu and one is Lamh Dearg Eirin. 3. HI Alice A similar story was passed down to me along with the crest of the family by my Great Uncle Harold O'Neal. Since then I have discovered many difference versions of the story. MY version told of a great race for land, and the first one to put his hand on the land will rule all of Ireland. I was told our O'Neal ancestor saw that he could not win, so he chopped off his right hand and threw it and his was the first to lay his hand on the land. another speaks of love , and another speaks of the ship story you mention in you re-mail. I have even found a web site that told of the story in great detail. However, There is no proof that the story is even true nor can it be proved at this point. It is just legend. It is a great story to tell your children when you are old and sitting by the fireplace on a cold dark night. I also would be interested in any more info you may find on this gentleman or your John. May I ask what your source is for the info you sent? >> Hi John, Thanks for your response. I really appreciate the information and your comments. My John O'Neill ca. 1745-1801, is indeed a mystery, but I wonder if the John O'Neill who died in 1781 was really a son of the immigrant Hugh O'Neill. I know it has been recorded that he was the son, but there seems to be many facts that would indicate he was not, for the following reasons; 1. The Jury Lists for South Carolina, 1778-1779, show that in the Little River area of South Carolina, there were 2 individuals named John ONeal. One of these lived near Hugh ONeal, the Quaker and Patriot (non-combatant) and the other John ONeal lived near Henry ONeal, the Loyalist and Tory. Since a Quaker and a Tory or officer in the British Army would be a contradiction in terms, this 2nd John ONeal may have been a cousin of Henry and not the son of Hugh O'Neill. Although Henry does seem to be a son of Hugh O'Neill the Immigrant. 2. The names of the children of John ONeal the Tory do not provide any helpful leads to his identity, but the children of John ONeal the Quaker, have the same naming pattern as does the immigrant Hugh O'Neill. (Hugh, John, Henry) Both have girls named Sarah. 3. Based on the Quaker records of South Carolina, it seems evident that my John O'Neill was a Quaker and so were his children and grandchildren, who all appear in the Quaker records as well as the Census records for 1790, 1800 and 1810. My sources for the research of John O'Neill include the following; 1. Land Deed Records, Union County, South Carolina. 2. Jury Lists, South Carolina, 1718-1783. 3. Jury Lists, South Carolina, 1778-1779. 4. Quaker Records, South Carolina. 5. The will of John O'Neill, June 2, 1801, July 13, 1801, Union County, South Carolina, which names his wife and children as well as 4 sons-in-law. 6. Taxpayer lists, 96 District and Union County, South Carolina. 7. U.S. Census, 1790, 1800, 1810 for Union County, South Carolina. I have seen the lineage of Jill O'Neall Ching and other information on that marvelous website for O'Neills, but based on all of my searching, it does seem to me that John O'Neill the Quaker is a better fit into the Hugh O'Neill family than is JohnO'Neill the Tory. It's very hard to imagine that a true Scotch-Irish would be loyal to the Crown, when you consider their past history. My John O'Neill moved into the area between the Pacolet River and Fairforest Creek (near Spartanburg County) at the close of the Revolutionary War. As a Tory, he could not have survived in that area, which was a hotbed of Scotch-Irish Rebels. I would appreciate any comments, corrections or any other information that you or anyone could furnish regarding the O'Neills of South Carolina. Best Regards, James E. Hargraves

    3. The closest I can find to your John O'Neill is this: 6. JOHN O'NEALL (son of Hugh) was born in 1745 in Christiana, Delaware. He married Grace Frost, daughter of John Frost, in Virginia . John Belton O'Neall claims Grace Frost was the sister of Mary, the wife of John's brother William. There is, however, no mention of a Grace Frost in the records of Hopewell Monthly Meeting, of which both Mary Frost and her probable father, John, were members. He died in 1781 in Union District, South Carolina, killed in a skirmish with Col. Roebuck. He moved with his parents, Hugh O'Neall and Anne Cox, circa 1750 to "the Susquehanna." He moved with his mother, Anne Cox, after Hugh's death to Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. The name of John O'Neal [sic] appears on land transactions in the Mudlick Creek area of (old) Berkeley County. Surveys and memorials dated 13 Feb. 1768 and 2 Aug. 1768 were signed "for the memorialist" on 12 Dec. 1768 by Jno. Caldwell and on 21 Mar. 1775 by William O'Neal. He moved in 1776 to South Carolina. He entered military service in the British Army, in which he attained the rank of Captain. GRACE FROST married (--?--) Crosby. Known children of John O'Neall and Grace Frost were as follows: i. SARAH. ii. REBECCA. This gentleman shares certain characteristics with your John O'Neill, but not enough. For instance, he died too early and his wife has the wrong name. For more, go to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~joneall/standard/famjrn2/famfrmsb.htm The John O'Neall mentioned is the 6th child of Hugh O'Neill. I also would be interested in any more info you may find on this gentleman or your John. May I ask what your source is for the info you sent?
