Hello! I don't have a William O'Neil, but I am very interested in O'Neil's in the NY area, especially Ogdensburg. The people we are searching for are probably 1-2 generations out, but hey what's a 100 years or so? In this business any link will do! My ggrandfather (John Henry O'Neill) was born in the US (probably NY) in 1863 and brought into Canada as an infant. When he was older and married they lived in Brockville, Ontario and he crossed over into the US by ferry to work. Family says he worked on the Ogdensburg railway line for a while and some others in the southern US. I know he had family in NY, and cousins who performed in Vaudeville. My grandmother did some of her nursing training in NY and her younger sister married and moved to NY. I am looking for LINDBLOM connections there as well. If you do find anything could you please keep me in mind and pass on the info? My ggrandfather may be related to yours somehow too..... Sharon
Hi Erin, I'm trying to search back a little with O'Neill in Scotland, but don't think we're the same family. Nevertheless, have you found anyone with an old family Bible you could look at (usually older Bibles had family info written inside). Another really useful "family history" technique I've used when meeting elderly relatives is to set up a video camera nearby, and just record what's said while everyone looks through old family photo albums. Your grandma or great uncle or whoever probably won't be unhappy about this, and the album will jog her/his memory, so you'll find out lots of interesting stuff. Maybe that would twig someone into remembering where your granddad came from? Hello everyone! This is my first posting, and I'm not sure what's usually discussed, but I'll just jump right in with the reason I joined. My grandfather was William A. O'Neil. He married Mary Dorothy Joubert (date unknown). Together they had six children, born in the following order (most dates unknown); William O'Neil (deceased), Ernie O'Neil (deceased), Jeanie O'Neil (currently residing in Ogdensburg, NY), Annie O'Neil (currently residing in NY state), Hughey O'Neil (currently residing in NY state) and Marguerite Carolyn O'Neil, b. 1940 (my mother, currently residing in Ogdensburg, NY). Mary Dorothy Joubert, b. 1908, was 34 when she died in 1942. William A. O'Neil left the family shortly after Mary died. It is said that he died shortly after that, however I have no proof of this. I have been unable to find any further information regarding my grandfather. There are alot of William O'Neil's but none of them seem to warrant a valid connection to my family. I believe that I may just be missing a couple vital pieces of information. My mother gave me the "O'Neil" name as my middle name in honor of her parents. All during my childhood my middle name was a reason to be teased and snickered at because it was different and unusual. Now it's a symbol of honor and family, the family my mother lost when she was very young. I want to know where my grandfather came from. If anyone has any information that may be able to help me in my search I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so very much in advance...... Sincerely, Erin O'Neil Kinsel Woodinville, WA email: Erin_K_99@hotmail.com
Greg, I'm also searching for a lost O'Neal. John & Millie. Millie's family left Tn circa 1871-72 and she marrys John O'Neal. Family history moves them to Mo, Ok (Indian Terr) and into Texas. John dies and she rturns to Tn and remarries. END of STORY. History states John had brothers George, Ben and a sister, Elizabeth. Have you ran across this line of O'Neals? Greg, I just saw your comment on Bennet's brother who moved to Texas. Any way I could get some additional data? I'M researching an Elbridge B. O'Neal, born in GA, owned a lumber mill in Bienville Parish, LA, and moved to Texas probably right after the Civil War. He shows up in the 1870 census as "Elridge B. O'Neil(l)" and the 1880 census as Elbridge B. Sometime in the 1880's he moved to Grayson County, Texas. I just can't seem to find anything more than his birthdate - 4/13/1827- in GA. I'd hate to have to go through the whole state of GA in the 1830 census to see if I could find him! Thanks for any help you can send my way. Maybe the author was referring to another John O'Neill, as we know that some of the O'Neill brothers who migrated to South Carolina did have sons named John, or possibly an unrelated John O'Neill. Of course, I will be happy to share my research and post it to this Forum. Thank you for your interest in this least known of the O'Neill brothers. James E. Hargraves

The research is very basic, using every scrap of information available to develop the history of an individual, but starting with a clean slate, not influenced by "The Annals of Newberry", which I'm sure is a fine historic record, but seems to contain no proof of the life and times of John O'Neill, born 1745. Hello. Here is what I have (and don't have) concerning this subject. > It has been recorded by some researchers that John O'Neill, born 1745 > Christiana, Delaware was the son of Hugh O'Neill and Anne Cox and that he > married Grace Frost and they had two children, Sarah and Rebecca. The source for this is John Belton O'Neall's "Annals of Newberry." The "Annals" were written about 1850, a century after the birth of this John... I surmise that J. B. O'Neall probably got the info from his father, Hugh, whose memory J. B. claims was excellent (before he started drinking heavily and again after he stopped). > It has also been recorded that this John O'Neill died 1781 in Union District, > South Carolina as a result of a Revolutionary war battle between Loyalists > and Patriots. Same source. Same remark. > > No one seems to know much about this John O'Neill D..n right! > and no record that Grace > Frost ever existed. J. B. O'Neall (him, again) claims Grace was the sister of Mary Frost, the wife of John's brother, William. The marriage of the latter couple is recorded in Hopewell records. But, as you point out, there is no record of a Grace Frost in the Hopewell records. Incidentally, it's not that clear who the father of Mary was, either. And William O'Neall's last name is recorded as Neall. > My question to any interested O'Neill researcher would be > as follows; Is there any proof that this John O'Neill died in 1781.? As far as I know, only what I've mentioned. Do you consider this to be "proof"? (I don't either.) I agree with your question. > > James E. Hargraves > > Good luck. John O'Neall, Thank you very much for your source records and comments of John O'Neill, born 1745 Delaware. I completely agree with your conclusions; that what little is recorded of John O'Neill contains a lot of speculation and second person heresay. I have found evidence, both real and circumstantial, that indicates John O'Neill did not die 1781 in Union District, South Carolina, but in fact lived a full life and died 1801 in Union County, South Carolina, leaving many children and descendants. Thanks again for your help. James E. Hargraves
James, I've been keeping up with the correspondences RE: John O'Neal. Please keep me posted on what you discover. It has been recorded by some researchers that John O'Neill, born 1745 Christiana, Delaware was the son of Hugh O'Neill and Anne Cox and that he married Grace Frost and they had two children, Sarah and Rebecca. It has also been recorded that this John O'Neill died 1781 in Union District, South Carolina as a result of a Revolutionary war battle between Loyalists and Patriots. No one seems to know much about this John O'Neill and no record that Grace Frost ever existed. My question to any interested O'Neill researcher would be as follows; Is there any proof that this John O'Neill died in 1781.? James E. Hargraves
Anne, I have a John George O'Neal that married Elizabeth Holley That would be close to the time frame. Do you have Elizabeth's maiden name?
