    1. Unidentified subject!
    2. Richard O'Neill
    3. In my younger (and more naive days) I took great pride in my surname O'NEILL. I allied my feelings with the Irish Catholic who left Ireland during the potato famine to seek a better life in America. In researching my ancestry, I learned that my ancestors in fact were in this country prior to the revolutionary war. What pride I felt in learning that I am descended from a patriot! More research has brought me back to earth. My relatives are O'NEILL, O'NEIL, and O'NEAL. The spelling may in fact have been determined by a clerk since not all of my relatives were literate! As a Catholic, I am the exception to the rule since most were Methodist. In fact, at least one may have fought with William of Orange in the Battle of the Boyne. Some were loyalists during the Revolutionary War rather than patriots. I sign my correspondence O'NEILL since that is who I am, and I use the same spelling when I refer to the "clan", but I use the appropriate spelling of an individual when I know it. There is no "correct" or standardized spelling and I see no need for one since there seems to be no real confusion. Even so, this is a fun topic for discussion. (upon re-reading this, I realize that it sounds like I'm pontificating even though I do not mean to do so. Maybe I really am Irish after all!) Richard O'NEILL San Antonio, TX [email protected]

    2. Wouldn't work, either. Some don't use the apostrophe; some don't capitalize the "N"; some (descendents) don't even use the "O" ... LOL

    2. Believe Tacoma Bob (O'Neal) began the reference to O'Nexlx and I, too, believe it to have been an inspiration. The "x" version helps to clarify discussions that are clan-generic in nature vice family specific. Besides, it was a significant departure from our (Tacoma Bob/San Antonio Bob) 2-year-long banter considering the value of the trailing "e." T-Bob and I descend from common stock but the spelling has meandered like the Mississippi. Atta boy, T-Bob ... and Jill, thanks for the support. ... ;o) SA-Bob

    3. Hi, I am writing this to you publicly as you wrote to the list in same fashion. I am not personally willing to use O'Neill exclusively to include all spellings of our common family name and the members who began on their own to use O'Nexxl or a derivative there of did so to include all spellings, relatively. This is a common way to include many variations of a name in gen communities, and is imho, creative. Your comment to the list is noted. You can of course do it however you want, as can everyone else on the list. Everyone gets to use the spelling of O'Neall/O'Neil/Neal/O'Nexxl etc here of their own choosing. 3. Thanks Emma! That is a good connection for me. Maybe this William Earp is the grandfather of my Mary Earp, married to William O'Neal! Our William married Mary Earp in 1845, so this can't be our William in the Census record. Does anyone have information on a William O'Neal born abt. 1825 in NC (probably Wake/Johnston Counties)? I have census records from 1870 and 1880, but nothing earlier. >Especially for Tamara: one of my cousins sent me this info. >On the 1850 Census page 247, Western Division House #1138, family >1138 Michael O'Neal age 27 white, male, farmer, born NC >Ann O'Neal age 27, white female, born NC >Willie O'Neal , age 6 white , male, born NC >John O'Neal age 4 white, male born NC >On the "Hunting for Bears" list: MICAJAH O'NEAL AND CLARANY >RICHARDSON married Johnston County NC on 01-21-1768 > >On August 3rd, 1778, land records show a Richard Pope enters two >hundred acres of land in Wake County, N side of Little River, Joining >the line of MICAJAH O'NEALS AND WILLIAM EARPS LINE . 3. Since we are on the subject... I have a William O'NEAL, born abt. 1825 in NC, married to Mary EARP. They had children (all in NC): Betsy Ann O'Neal b. 1848 Rufus O'Neal b. 1850 Candis O'Neal b. 1852 Alvis O'Neal b. October 1853 Ellen O'Neal b. 1856 Emma Lee O'Neal, April 6, 1859 Martha O'Neal, abt. 1861 Molly O'Neal, abt. 1862 Katherine O'Neal, abt. 1866 Thomas O'Neal, abt. 1869 Solomon O'Neal, abt. 1873 Peggy Rudd McAndrew has a theory that William is the son of Zachariah O'Neal (based on her census research), but we have found no evidence yet to prove this. Can anyone help? -Tamara ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. Dear Gaye, I am an O'Neill living in Sydney Australia. I have lived in Tasmania for a couple of years but haven't met any O'Neills, though I could have a look in the phone book. Any clues? Any information at all. I was brought up in Co Antrim, Northern Ireland & emmigrated to Australia in 1971 - somewhat removed from 1830. Was he a willing immigrant - I suppose he was if he came from British Guyana. The point I'm making is that at that time Tasmania was still (just) a convict state & there are plenty of records available about convict traffic to the Australian colonies. No disrespect intended - you could be classed as a convict for stealing a loaf of bread. Patrick O'Neill
