    2. I don't know if I've posted this all before or not, but just saw Mary's post of a John O'Neal and a Giles Henderson O'Neal. They are in the wrong part of the country for me (WV) but I was struck my Giles' middle name of Henderson as I think it is a bit unusual. My great grandfather was a HENDERSON O'NEAL, (born abt 1811 in NC) who in 1830 married one REBECAH HORTON (b abt 1813). They had 7 children to the best of my knowledge: JOHN O'NEAL 1833 NC FRANCES ' b 1836 ? SIDNEY ' b1837 NC THOMAS b 1842 NC MICHAEL CADGER DEE HAWKINS O'NEAL b Nov 19 1846 NC CAROLlNE b 1848 AR SAMUEL b 1852 AR After Rebecah died, HENDERSON married NANCY KILNER (born in TN) (mother of my grandfather) in 1862. She was 32, he was 57. Their children were" MARTHA O'Neal born about 1864 in AR ZACHARIAH O'Neal born 1865 in AR (known to us as ZACK R.) There was listed also a SUSAN O'NEAL born in 1858 in TN, who may/may not have been Nancy's daughter from a previous marriage. I don't know if Nancy's maiden name was Kilner or not. All of the above is correct to the best of my ability. Corrections, additions or questions are welcome. Emma

    3. Brenda ~ This Hugh O'Neall, married to Anne Kelly was the son of William O'Neall my ancestor. The Hugh O'Neall married to Mary Parkins was the brother of the above William and the son of Hugh O'Neill/O'Neall married to Anne Cox. Hope this clears that up. 2. In a message dated 9/20/98 9:17:39 AM Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << I was born in 1918 in Pittsburgh but I grew up in Eastern Ohio. Both of my parents were born in County Antrim so I am a first generation American. >> Bill, Thank you for your kind reply. I too was born in Pennsylvania (New Castle) and I too grew up in Eastern Ohio: Wintersville, Jefferson Co Ohio, a small town just six miles from Steubenville. My grandparents (mother's side) lived in Washington Co, Marietta, Ohio and we visited them every year in the summer from 1938 to 1954, when we moved back to Pittsburgh. I took Ohio state civics in school, so I am an indoctrinated Ohioan. (Round on both ends and 'hi' in the middle.) On your comments; What you wrote is somewhat familiar to me as I have been focusing on Antrim in my research from time to time. I have run across the town of Balleymena, but there is also an "administrative region" called Ballymena. I assume you refer to the town. I am not sure of the parishes ("administrative districts"?). Is Skelly a town or parish? On my Antrim map I find Skerry as an area (as you say a parish) due northwest of Ballymena town. I can only find the town of Ballymena on my map. I can not find Loughconnelly or Tecloy or Carnlough (towns?) either. Are these places close to Ballymena? Are these "administrative regions" similar to our townships as in Ohio? I alos have thought that our immigrant ancestor could have been from the Clandeboye O'Neill branch. The reason that they are Protestant is covered in several histories and genealogies. Apparently, some of them were allowed to keep some their lands as they had turned Protestant and their leader, the Clandeboye O'Neill had fought against the 'rebel' O'Neill and been knighted. I have read about these confusing back-and-forth-and-back battles, skirmishes, plots, and massacres in "A History of Ulster", by Jonathon Bardon (Blackstaff Press:Belfast 1994) and in "History of the Name O'Neill" by J.D. Williams, (History House Publ.: Ennis, Co.Clare, 1983). It is terribly confusing to trace any one family through all these decades of fighting, as they appear to switch sides with abandon. The best reference I have seen is Margaret Dickson Falley's two great volumes, "Irish and Scotch-Irish Ancestral Research, (GPC:Baltimore, 1988). For example, of possible interest to you, on page 410, Vol.2, under "Presbyterian Church Records in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, Belfast" (PRONI) it lists "Buckna, Co.Antrim, Baptismal Register, Buckna Presbyterian Church, 1841-1850. Transcript." I have some more questions for you: 1. How far back in time have you been able to trace your O'Neills? William O'Neill (ca.1841-1914), Arthur O'Neill (1888-1976), William Stuart O'Neil (1918- ) 2. What places other than Ballymena, Skerry, Tecloy, Loughconnelly in N.I. did your ancestors live? Is Skerry also a town or village? 3. Have you done any genealogical research, esp. in the Presbyterian Church parish records in Ballymena/Skerry/Antrim? That would be fertile ground I'm thinking. In all my 14 years of researching the name, I have always been told that the records in Ireland esp. before 1800s are all local, and that one MUST have a place name to start research and find any kind of family connection in Ireland. 4. When was the last time you were over there? We are planning this coming year or next to go to N.I. My wife is from Norway and we were married in Oslo in 1964. We go back every few years as she has much family there. 5. Have you been on the O'NEALL-LIST that I mentioned? Have you ever checked out the associated web site for Shane's castle? The listowner, Jill O'Neall Ching, of Hawaii, has some sites which relate to a Hugh O'Neall/O'Neill of Shane's Castle. There is quite a lot of discussion on this list about it. Since our family, like yours were mostly farmers, etc. I just assumed there was no noble connection. But, when the Clandeboye O'Neills were dispossessed by the English, there could have been a great many O'Neill relatives left with no lands or livelihood and some could have emigrated. By the way, since we are both on AOL, we can do "instant messages" when we are both on line at the same time. I have added your screen name to my 'buddy list' so I will know when you are online. Let's keep in touch, Bill. Regards, Bob O'Neal 2102 N. Union Ave Tacoma WA 98406 Tel: 253-752-8242 Fax: 253-759-7113

    3. Hi all! So then, all Hugh's contemporary descendants do not bear the O'Neall surname, unless they picked it up elsewhere. Does anyone have more on this Caldwell family? There are several times they show up in the O'Neall records. They were a large and powerful family. The "C" in John C. Calhoun stands for Caldwell! 1. [ONEALL-L] "Ultimo" & "Instant" defined
    2. Richard O'Neill
    3. Cheryl, I looked up "ultimo" in my grandmother's very old (1899) Webster's Dictionary. Indeed, it does mean "from the previous month". The same source defines "instant" as "present or current as in; On the tenth of July instant." Richard O'Neill San Antonio, TX [email protected]

    1. [ONEALL-L] Re: O'Neills of Antrim
    2. W. Stuart O'Neil, To your message below which came from the Antrim rootsweb list: My name is William Robert O'Neal (1938-), my father was Robert William O'Neal (1908-1986), my grandfather William James O'Neal (1883-1969). My grandfather, originally from Cumberland MD went to Pittsburgh (Homestead) in about 1900 to work in the steel mills. He was RR Supt. at the Homestead Works for Carnegie- Illinois Steel and later US Steel. Our family lived there (Brentwood) 1940-1942 and ( Mt. Lebanon) 1954-1963. My father graduated as an engineer from Pitt. We lived in Mt. Lebanon where I graduated from high school. So your entry caught my eye. There are more coincident facts. We are trying to trace the origins. Family tradition from all branches agree that they came from "Antrim" (town?, county?), but we have no place name, no documents or other information. All of OUR branches (fully documented) spell the name O'Neal or O'Neale. They were ALL Protestant going back to 1660s. I have traced my O'NEALs back to Bedford Co PA in 1776-1850, Montgomery/Frederick Co's MD in 1750-1776 and St. Mary's/Calvert Co's MD from 1660s to ca. 1750. I have been in contact with MANY true cousins all descendants of Joseph O'NEAL (ca.1660-ca.1700). His descendants went into PA, VA, KY, OH, and southwestward. One early branch to GA. This has always been a puzzle to us. Is this a clue to searching in Antrim? Should we look for Protestant O'Neals? I am well familiar wih the "Plantation" to Ireland, but I assumed that the O'Neals/O'Neills were NOT planted, that is did not come from Scotland as there were so many of them already in Northern Ireland and esp. Antrim in the 1600s. I also do not believe they were of the Irish nobility. I do not think they owned land. Although some could have been "servitors". I am familiar with the noble branches who capitulated to the British in order to save their lands and were made tenants. You are the FIRST O'Neill/O'Neal/O'Neale I have found who back to Antrim and is PROTESTANT. They were early on in 1692, "Church of Maryland" or Episcopal (Church of England) then later in my branch mostly "Methodist Episcopal" or "M.E." as they referred to it in documents. [By the way, we use the shorthand term "O'Nexlx" to designate ALL the spellings of O'Neal/O'Neall/O'Neill/O'Neale/O'Neil/O'Neel/O'Nail.] My questions for you are the same ones that have been puzzling us: How did your O'Neill/O'Neil family become Protestant? Are there other Protestant O'Nexlx families in Antrim? How did THEY become Protestant? Where can we find some history of this? Is the fact they are Protestant a good clue to help us find the immigrant? Can we rule out certain places or O'Nexlx families in Antrim? Are there certain church records? Were they in fact planted from Scotland? (I think not). Were they not Irish born for generations in Antrim? If so, how did they become (turn) Protestant? How would you answer these questions for YOUR O'Neills? Have you been to Ireland and researched in Antrim? I would be very glad to hear from you. Incidentally, I belong to an "O'Neall LIst" which is a surname rootsweb list (newsgroup) similar to the Antrim rootsweb list. To subscribe merely send a "subscribe" message to [email protected] Most of these O'Nexlx subscribers are researching in the South, but there may be some connection for you. Bob O'Neal 2102 N. 3. About Niall's saga and the origins of the name, I asked my wife to look up what she could find in our copy. I had a feeling there was a problem with the dates. Here's what she found, interspersed in the original notes. To be brief, Njal's saga dates from oral stories told around the year 900, whereas Nial of the 9 Hostages lived in, if I remember correctly, the 400s. Would sound more like a Celtic export to Scandinavia that the other way around, based on the saga. But when was the god worshiped? Just some food for thought. John > |> 1. I'm one of them. The letter is å and it's pronounced like 'aw' in saw. This is a question I've asked myself at least since John O'Neall, my husband got involved in genealogy. It seems obvious that there must have been a very close connection. But how did it work? I also tend to believe that the Norse languages had an influence on the Celtic language. I'm a linguist by the way, but not competent to do detective work on Norse/Celtic connections. My linguistic studies had nothing to do with Norse or Celtic. Siv O'Neall > | > |Anyway, I've decided to use the Soundex version of my name. > | > |Jon O540 > | > |
