Hello, William -- First, a question: How do you descend from the Clannaboy (There's another spelling!) O'Neills? As to Skerry, I suggest you go to http://www.cgocable.net/~aoneill/homepg.htm and click on "The Royal O'Neill Family Genealogy Part 2 - Clan Aedh Buidhe" in the panel on the left. About 2/3 of the way down the page, just after no. 127, "French" John O'Neill, you'll find a link to some photos of Skerry Church (taken by my wife and me in 1997). That'll show you what sort of shape it's currently in (ruins). There are no graves to be found inside the ruin, just junk. Sad. Also, you'll see in the paragraph on French John that he built a mausoleum on the Shane's Castle grounds. There's a link to a photo of that, too. French John says elsewhere that his father, Brian, was buried at Skerry. Now Skerry is/was a Catholic burial ground, hence its current neglect. And this was a period in Irish history when the English were looking for land to take away from the Catholic Irish. So somewhere along here, the O'Neills became Protestant in order to keep at least some of their lands. Note in this context no. 124, Shane MacBrien O'Neill, wherein you'll learn about some of the lands the O'Neills actually lost at that time. Based on French John's construction of the mausoleum, one would guess that his father was a Catholic and John himself a Protestant. You'll probably get replies from others on this subject. So that's about it for Skerry and the conversion of the Clannaboy O'Neills, at least as far as my knowledge of them goes. By the way, I and a number of other folks on this list (tho not at all everyone, as has been well pointed out recently), are descended from a certain Hugh O'Neill (or O'Neale) who came to the New World around 1725-1730, supposedly by jumping ship while in the British Navy. Whether this Hugh can be identified with French John's brother Hugh is a subject I will not enter in to now, since it's not the point of this note. It's also a point of rather intense contention for some people. ;-) Hope this helps. Good Evening to all I have a mystery letter (first page only, no signature page) which has intrigued me for 40 yrs! It was rescued when my gt.grandfather's effects were destroyed after his death in 1905. I would be overjoyed if there was anyone on this list who could throw some light on it. I will reproduce it in full as it is rather involved. The original spelling has been retained. "13 Whitworth Row, Sibal Place, Dublin Oct 29th, 1857 My Dear Niece I am glad to hear that you are quite recovered in health and that your eye is better. I hope that mother is likewise so in good health, also your brothers and sisters. Dear Ann, you wish me to let you know the history of your ancestors. They were of the O'Nails of Shains Castle in the North of Ireland. By your Mother's mother, her brother was General Cesar John O'Nail in the French Service and his other brother was President of the College Lumbard. In France the General had three horses shot from under him and mounted the fourth. Your Grand Father (Mother) by your mother was O'Nail McPherson. He was from the Highlands of Scotland, Inverness was the town. He was a Doctor by profession, his mother was a Campbell. The Crest of the O'Nails was Cat and Glove, that is, gentle when stroked but fierce when provoked. As for the Buckinghams, they were from Kent, my father's grandfather was an Admiral at sea, his name was Loram Buckingham in the British Fleet. The President has left a great deal of money for his friends, if we only knew how to go about it in France. Our family, the further they are traced, the grander they are. They were all gentlemen and warriors - high dignitaries of the church ......." [End of letter] According to the National Library of Ireland (1978) per Thom's Dublin Street Directories, the occupant of the address in 1867/58 was Mr Thomas COSGRAVE. Of course, it does not follow that Mr Cosgrave was necessarily the author of the letter. From the tone of the letter the writer could also possibly be a Buckingham. Nor is it known whether the writer was male or female. My gt.grandfather was Charles Dean BURTON who md Ann HAMILTON (d/o Wm HAMILTON, Silversmith) in 1864 at St George, Camberwell, Surrey. I have not come across any connection in the BURTON research so can only presume the letter in some way is connected with the HAMILTON's. After all these years I would love to be able to slot this information into my research somewhere - even if it means elimination! I would be very grateful for any answers. I just found out that the marriage to John O'Neal in Christian Co, KY was not correct. I had searched the cd on his wife's name and found John Daniel. I assumed incorrectly that someone had transcribe the O'Neal to Daniel. Eunice McCammon
I found the following information in the book THE O'NEAL FAMILY HISTORY written by Margaret Joplin Farham and Mary O'Neal McCammon. This book deals primarily with the O'Neals who settled in Independence Co, AR. Abijah and John O'Neal were brothers who came to Arkansas from Logan County, Kentucky. John b. 1799 married Nancy Harbour in Christian Co, KY in 1820 according to the marriage cd. Other info has 1818. Abijah was born abt 1797 and probably married in Arkansas. According to this book, his first two wives have not been identified, but the first one was probably a Taylor, the second one was Elizabeth _________, and the third one was Martha A. Johnson. Do any of you have information on this James of Gloucester or his son Adam? This book also contains some general information on O'Neals and records of land transactions, marriages, and tax books from KY (Logan, Christian, and Warren) along with land claims from different states. The following reference to the Arkansas branch of O'Neals is found in "Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas", (Shinn) pp. 271 and 274: "There is quiet an army of Lindsays, descending from the Earl of Lindsay, now living in Arkansas, who descended in another way. They carry the blood and are of a remote kind, but of the clan. These are Colonel Lindsey, the Tripletts, the Embrees, the O'Neals. All these, however, are later additions to the Arkansas trunk, coming in fully thirty years after the advent of the Gloucester, Carolina, Albermarle, and Rockbridge lines. The O'Neals of Arkansas descend from James of Gloucester, through Adam, his third son." Thanks, Eunice McCammon [email protected]

Hi I have been lurking and trying to learn how to proceed. I am looking for information on William Emmett O'Neill b @1882, d @1931, probably in Maywood (Chicago) IL. Are these dates right and where was he born? His father is said to have been a Charles O'Neill, married to Mamie Carrol. Is anyone following these lines? I know nothing more of Charles and Mamie than their names. Any information or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Edyth (Matthews) O'Neill in Fredericksburg TX.
I am researching the following O'Neal Family I do have more on the descendants. I would be interesting in anyone connecting with this family. Sharon The legend handed down about the O'NEAL FAMILY is as follows: " In Ireland, the mother of 13 boys, on her death bed, exacted a promise from her husband that after her death he would take the boys to America. After coming to America, he bound each son out to a trade, as was the custom in those days." The names of the father or the boys is not known. But, it is presumed that one of these 13 boys was the father of our ancestor, Benedict O'Neal. Benedict O'Neal was born in 1801 in Delaware. He married Jemima Santee, about 1828, records state that she was a French woman from the Carolina's. Jemima was born between 1800 and 1810, she died about 1850 and is buried at Beck Cemetery, west of Fairfax, Mo. Benedict was buried in Fremont Co. Ia. on a farm, some years later Joseph M. O'Neal opened his fathers grave and re-interred the body in a cemetery in or near Sidney, Ia. It is believed that Benedict grew to manhood in Delaware and that he operated a ferry boat on the Delaware River and worked on the river a lot. The first record in the U. S. Census is 1830 Ind., Johnson Co. White River Twp. The 1840 Census also shows them in Johnson CO. Ind. The following children were born to Benedict and Jemima; Daughter, (no record) born about 1829 Samuel Santee O'Neal born 1-21-1833 William O'Neal born 1836 Son (no record) born 1835-1840 Nancy Emily O'Neal born 3-10-1840 Joseph Milton O'Neal born 6-2-1843 John O'Neal born 1847 Records indicate that shortly after 1847 the family emigrated to Atchison Co. Mo. and that Jemima died there in 1850. It was said that her son Samuel cut an O in a limestone rock to mark her grave. The marker has never been found. Some time after Jemima's death Benedict went to Dallas Co. Iowa. He is shown in the 1856 Census. The 1870 Census Iowa shows Benedict married to a widow by the name of Susan S. Taylor. We only know about the oldest daughter through the 1830 and 1840 census of Johnson CO. Ind. She would have been about 18 years old when the family left Ind. for Mo. So it is possible that she married there and stayed in Ind. when the family left, or she might have died and been buried there. Either case would explain the loss of her name to the rest of the family. William O'Neal , we know only from the 1856 Iowa Census. A son near William's age is known to us only from the 1840 Ind. census; a name for him does not appear in the later census from Iowa. It was said that two of the O'Neal boys went on the Gold Rush and were never heard from again, and two of them went to the Civil War and never came back. The census records are far from complete and as we know the family broke up after their mother died. It is however remembered that there may have also been a son named Dick. John O'Neal was born in 1847 in Johnson Co. Ind. He never married and after his fathers death he lived and worked many years for a family in Fremont Co., Ia. He spent his last days in the county poor Farm and is buried in a potters field at Sidney, Iowa. The only descendants known of Benedict and Jemima O'Neal are those of Samuel, Nancy and Joseph. You will find their families charted on the following pages. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
