Pat, I have not had the opportunity to visit, but I'm told that Darius O'Neil is buried in the Clay Creek Cemetery near the Clay Creek Baptist Church in the Bybee area near Newport, TN. His grave is marked with a DAR marker which lists his dates of birth and death. I don't know if any other O'Neils are buried there. If you (or anyone else) should have the chance to visit, I sure would be curious to know what you find there! Richard O'NEILL San Antonio, TX [email protected] [email protected]

    3. ATTN! Someone just sent a huge text file to the wrong address, see subj above. You should send all list mail only to [email protected] when you put the request word in the address you are sending your mail only to a robot which spits it out and sends it to me only. No one else saw it. And such huge text files are not appropriate for this list, most email readers have a limit of the size of mail that can be read, and this one was way too big. Just send it in 2 separate mailings and it will be fine and kindly send it to the correct address. If someone is inexperienced at using email discussion groups, there are websites on the topic of net etiquette which could be helpful. Thank you very much for your cooperation. Jill O'Neall Ching >> I cannot trace my family back to the O'Neills of Shane's Castle. As I said earlier, I base my belief that I am descended from the O'Neills of Clannaboy on the fact that my ancestral family members were protestant, at least back to my great grandfather, William O'Neill, who was born about 1815 and the fact that several family members were buried in Skerry Burial Grounds. The earliest public record that I have found is for the marriage of my grandparents, William O'Neill and Sarah Ritchie, in 1861. Their marriage is recorded in the Buckna Presbyterian Church. From that record, I know that my great-grandfather's name was also William O'Neill. He lived in the townland of Longmore when my grandparents were married. My grandparents were born about 1841. They were both listed as 60 years old in the 1901 census. I have a newspaper article written at the time of the death of my great uncle, Rowan "Roger" O'Neill, which states that he was buried in Skerry Burial Ground. The article also states that he was "reputed to be a lineal descendant of the Antrim branch of the O'Neills of Ulster". I have another newspaper article in which a family member is quoted describing the funeral of another great-uncle, James O'Neill. He was also buried in Skerry. My father, Arthur O'Neil, born 1888, was the youngest of the eleven children born to William O'Neill and Sarah Ritchie. He came to America in 1908. An older brother, William James O'Neil, came to Pittsburgh in 1886. To my knowledge, he was the first of our line of O'Neills to immigrate. My grandmother's brother, Archibald Ritchie, had come over about the time of the potato famine. Both my father and his brother changed the spelling of their name when they came to this country. I am still working on the lineage. I was hoping someone could give me a list of those buried in Skerry. If you have any words of advice, I would appreciate them. Bill O'Neil Coraopolis, PA.

    2. In Over the Misty Blue Hills, her story of Cocke County, Tennessee, Ruth Webb Odell (p127) lists Darius Sons and daughters as: Joseph, William, George W., Calvin, Harrison, Nancy, and Maria, and Darius Jr. A slightly different list exist so I'm not completely confident of this listing (nancy might be a cousin). I'm descended from the Darius Jr. line and havn't yet followed up on William but it seems he would have been born in the early 1800s. Several of these O'Neils went west to Clinton, Mo. and on to Texas (see rmo notes). Mine moved to Cleveland, Tenn and then to Tacoma, Wash, and then to Pittsburgh, PA. leaving relatives scattered everywhere. Richard (rmo) might know more about this William.
