    3. Hi all~ Thanks Alan for explaining the spam problem very well, the good thing is he, Sam the Spammer is not subscribed to the list, but wrote simply to the list address. Our list is open which means non-subscribers can post to it whether or not they are subbed, however only subscribers will receive email. Usually the rootsweb filters that are in place will snag these messages before they even reach the list members and then I get a report titled "we blocked some spam from your list" sometimes I get 6 reports like this a day! Anyway I would not give it too much worry, the main thing to remember about such "Fantastic Offers!" is that you should never reply to them, because then they have your email address. And never open an attachment from someone you don't know, because that could contain some nasty little bug. Delete is your friend~ Jill

    2. Jill, The USS YMS-292 is a mine sweeper. That's what the MS stands for. The Victory Medal I think was given to serviceman who were in the service at the end of war. Don

    2. Well, as an ex-navy person, I might be able to shed a little more light to this. NTS=Naval Training Station. Farragut is located in northern "panhandle" region of Idaho. It's closer to Couer delene than to Sandpoint, however it is between the two. I'll note that I've lived in WA for all of my life, but I'm just across the Idaho/WA line. Farragut is, and has been since the Navy closed it, a state park!! As a civilian employee of our local USAF base........I'll also pass on that there is still a small Navy presence on "Pon Da Ray" lake :>) It's located at Bayview, ID Hope this helps Don O'Neall

    2. Jill, I was in the Army, but as I was connected to the Sea Scouts and my son was on the Norwegian tall ship, "Kristian Radich" for a year, I am somewhat familiar with some of the information. I am sure there is a Navy man out there who knows all the answers to your questions. AS = Able Seaman S2c = Seaman 2nd Class s1c = Seaman 1st Class Cox = Coxswain (pronounced Cox'n) These are his ratings (ranks) as he was promoted upwards. They are his "stripes" he wore. You can find out from this what he was paid in those days as these are linked to pay grades (E-1, E-2, E-3, etc.) My guess is that NTS = Naval Training Ship (probably a ship training unit in Idaho, and could be a vessel named "Farragut") The rest of the vessels by letter and number are a job for a sailor to identify. These are service medals he was awarded. American Area = ? for wartime service in a Naval "Area of Operations" Victory Medal= awarded to all after the surrender. Asiatic Pacific (3 stars) = campaign ribbon with a star for each campaign. You can find out the names of these campigns from his service records, or by comparing his dates of service on each vessel he was aboard. Recruit Training 8 wks = just a note on training, maybe, but prob. not a ribbon, that would probably have been in Idaho. If you can get from the NARA (National Archives), a Form 180, you can send for a copy of his service records. Just send an email request to inquirearch2.nara.gov and provide your mailing address they may need some proof of relationship as well due to privacy law. The National Personnel Records Center also has information on those who served in WWII. Go to www.nara.gov/regional/stlouis.html (downloadable forms). And I know there will be a sailor to tell you more. You can always tell a sailor, but you can't tell them much! (:-) Regards, Bob O'Neal in Tacoma WA By the way, I met my wife on a blind date too when I was on active duty. !!

    3. Thanks Bob, That was a great reminder of the debt we owe to the defenders of freedom. My own remembrance focuses, not so much on my dad, who is a WWII veteran, as on my cousin James Donald Fulmer. An O'Neall descendant, and a Marine's Marine. He was selected to march in Truman's inaugueral parade, served in Korea, then Viet Nam. hi job was to go in behind enemy lines and bag up the dead, and bring them out. He certainly put in his time in hell! With all that, he was so very charming! 3. Hi Jim! Mark me YES, YES, YES! I think the prospects of a room full of "kindred" O'Neall spirits, is awesome! SLC, and Williamsburg, VA are probably my two favorite places in the world to visit, but I would not be willing to sacrifice Bert's attendence for either. Certainly a trip to Winchester is in order, most of our Quaker roots passed through there, enroute to SC, such a trip should be accompanied with a plan for a two pronged assault on the records. The first, what records might we expect to find on location, second, what questions do we seek answers to. This should enable a division of labor, and insure that we are not all trying to get the at same records, or answer the same questions, at the same time. There are many ways to proceed, when one arrives at a repository of records. My personal choice is to begin with the pamphlet file. Many of these are available only on location, and are not often published. It is a way of standing on the shoulders of other researchers, who have been that way before. There are many surnames besides O'Neall that might have material helpful to O'Neall researchers. I'll bet there are as many good ideas as there are O'Neall researchers. If this trip is not to Virginia, then plans for the next should be made with that target in mind! When we go to Virginia, I want to see us go in prepared. Thanks for reading this. 3. Hi Gang! (For Informational purposes only) Just thought I would pass this along, with the blessing of the list member who sent it to me. He received this from his first cousin who had been to SC recently. <snip> Charleston is cute as the dickens, history on every corner, several libraries for research. I used the county library when I was there. I wanted SC information and it had a great deal of local information. Because the family was in SC this could be a good choice. However, I would not go in the summer because of the heat and humidity. Other possibilities to consider include Salt Lake City. The Star in the Crown of Genealogy Research Sites. As past-president of the Santa Barbara County Gen. Soc. I know a group can get special air rates and special consideration at the hotel next to the library. It used to be the Howard Johnson. Santa Barbara might also be on the list. Our society just got a 1.1 million dollar library donation. It has been brought up to code and opened in October. We have 5,000 plus volumes, exchanges with around 100 other society quarterlies, a computer, a copier, a good climate and time of year, 500+ members of supportive genealogists and one other O'Neall! Pass it on. :) Carol <end of snip> Jim O'Neall [email protected] "Searching the past; Looking to the future"

    3. This is a response to one of our cousin's suggestion Jill do something about "Sam's" use of the ONEALL-L list for spamming. My intention is not to start a discussion on e-mail ethics, but I do want to point out that Jill, other listmasters, and ISPs are as much victimized by the "Sams" as we are. If anyone feels compelled to take issue with my stand, please take it offline and address me directly. I don't think our cousins care to get their mailboxes jammed up with off-issue messages. Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of the freedom of the Internet is it also exposes us to the unethical trade practices of people like "Sam." I'm sure Jill can remove him from the list under his current guise, but that doesn't keep him or his ilk away. They tend to have thick skins or somehow convince themselves they are providing a legitimate service. The economics of direct mail make spamming seem very attractive. Who can pass up a practically zero cost advertising medium? The return is very low and who cares if you reduce the value of a medium for 99.9% of your audience? That 0.1% return pays for your trouble. "Sam" is particularly offensive to me because he appears to be selling his list mining knowledge under the guise of legitimate e-commerce trade practices. E-mails come in with a detailed record of their origin which ISPs can use to track back to the offender. For example, I checked Sam's record and learned his e-mail address is [email protected] That address, however, is probably only used for sending mail and he probably doesn't care if that box gets loaded with flames or requests for removal from his lists. Another way to find out more about offenders is to check on the registered owner of their domain at www.internic.net. I added what I found out about "Sam's" domain to the end of this message. Sometimes the registrant cares about abuses of their domain. I recommend addressing the issue with the webmaster of your ISP (for example, [email protected] or [email protected]). They have far more control over this than Jill. You can also try [email protected] or [email protected] though mini-mail.com is probably just "Sam's" alias. Most legitimate ISPs want his kind of spam off their bandwidth as much as we do. For example, my ISP (GTE) actively tracks down such people and pulls their plug. 1. [ONEALL-L] Re: [MDALLEGA-L] Veteran's Day
    2. Carol & List members, Please forgive me for passing on a little message on Veteran's Day. I served twice in Vietnam and when I retired after 23 years, and went to work as a civilian businessman, my ten-year-old daughter Kristin asked me one November 11th (Veterans Day), "Dad, Why do we get school off and you have to work on Veteran's Day? You should get the day off!" I'll never forget my daughter's comment. So now that I am self-employed, I TAKE Veteran's day off . . . and it feels great! So, for all you Veterans and rooters with family members who are veterans, here's something from another list: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The original “What is a Vet?” VETERANS DAY, 11 NOVEMBER 1998 WHAT IS A VET? Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet? She - or he- is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel. She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang. He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL. He -or she- is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account people into Marines, and taught them to watch each other's backs. He -or she- is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand. He -or she- is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by. He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep. He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come. He -or she-is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs. He -or she- is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known. So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say "Thank You". That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded. Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Remember November 11th is "Veterans Day" "It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag." Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “The following letter is from a Marine in Viet Nam to his parents. A remembrance to all who have answered their nation's call. THEY'RE REAL CHAMPIONS "...Just imagine, most of the guys over here are 18 and fighting to make it to 19. The average age of the combat soldier in many units here is 18 1/2. And what a man he is. A pink cheeked, tousled haired, tight muscled fellow who, under normal circumstances, would be considered by society as half man, half boy, not yet dry behind the ears and a pain in the unemployment chart. "But here and now he is the beardless hope of free men. He is, for the most part, unmarried and without material possessions except possibly for an old car at home and a transistor radio here. He listens to rock n roll and 105 millimeter howitzers. "He just got out of high school, received so so grades, played a little football and had a girl who promised to be true. "He has learned to drink beer because it is cold and 'is the thing to do'. He is a private first class, a one year military veteran with one or possible three years to go. "He has never cared for work, preferred waxing his own car to washing his father's but he is now working or fighting from dawn to dark, and often longer. "He still has trouble spelling and writing letters home is a painful process. But he can break down his rifle in 30 seconds and put it back together in 29. He can describe the nomenclature of a fragmentation grenade, explain how a machine gun operates and use either if the need arises. "He can dig a foxhole, apply first aid to a wounded companion, march until he is told to stop, or stop until he is told to march. He has seen more suffering than he should in his short life. He has stood among hills of bodies, and he has helped to build those hills. He has wept in private and in public and has not been ashamed at doing either, because his pals have fallen in battle and he has come close to joining them. "He has become self sufficient. He has two pair of fatigues, washes one and wears the other. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but not his rifle. He keeps his socks dry and his canteen full. "He can cook his own meals, fix his own hurts and mend his own rips - material or mental. He will share his water with you if you thirst, break his rations in half if you hunger and split his ammunition if you are fighting for your life. "He can do the work of two civilians, draw half the pay of one and find ironic humor in it all. He has learned to use his hands as a weapon and his weapon as his hands. He can save a life or most assuredly take one. "He is now 19, a veteran and fighting to make 20 ..."” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These messages came from: From: [email protected] (Betty Briggs) to the OHIO- [email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All the best today, to all of you who are veterans and to all the families whose freedom you have helped to secure. Well here I am at my trusty old puter, it is now after midnight and I just got home from work, another of those 15 hour work days with an hour commute each way. I think I am getting too old for all this! It also has been one horrific day for weather. Started off with rain and high winds, up to 60 mph, (loss of electrical power,) developed into snow and freezing rain with continuing high winds with the temp hovering around 30 degrees. I guess winter is here. Hey your starting to make me feel like there are some kin out there who would really like to get together and lie. Sounds GREAT to me. 3. Jim -- I suspect that, when you close the polls, it would be a good idea to have a runoff between, say, the top 3, with each person voting once (or twice?). Personally, I'm happy to leave that choice up to you. Thanks again for taking care of it.
