    3. To Hamrick and O'Neall Discussion Groups, I just received this message (below) from another listowner, who is saying that webtv is considering rootsweb as spam! If you are on webtv it looks like you will not be able to utilitze rootsweb email lists, the only thing you can do is complain to webtv, if enough complain maybe they will get wise. Next I am going to search our subscibers lists for any webtv subscribers, in the meantime I would contact webtv and tell them rootsweb is not spam but a highly educational genealogical discussion group. Good luck, Jill O'Neall Ching ---------- : From: Sandi Gorin <[email protected]> : To: [email protected] : Subject: WEBTV : Date: Friday, November 13, 1998 10:55 AM : : I just received notice that the ISP webtv has hired some professionals to : help them eliminate spam. 3. Jill, I was never in the Navy but lived in Idaho for 38 yrs. NTS Farragut was a navy "boot" camp (base) for basic training in Idaho near the town of Sandpoint on the shores of the huge lake Pend Orielle (pronounced Pon Da Ray). The base is gone now. I served in several joint commands with Navy people but am not sure of the AS rate, at some periods of time it was an "able bodied seaman" at other times it was an "apprentice seaman". Better find some old Navy hand to straighten that out! The S1c, S2c were seaman first & second class ratings. The Cox was a Coxswain prounced Cox'n. Cox'ns were in command of small detachments aboard the ship, such as signalmen, rudder control (steering), etc. & other small units.

    3. I certainly appreciate all the warm sympathy I received from the list on the passing of my Aunt Crystal. She had a good long life, and passed peacefully in her sleep, without suffering. She had a touch of pneumonia. There are a few on the list who remember an ugly incident during the Roosevelt years, when Marian Anderson was scheduled to sing the national anthem from Constitution Hall, the national headquarters of the D. A. R. Several bigotted southern ladies were in charge that day, and they decided to disallow the performance. For those who are too young to appreciate it, let me say that Marian Anderson's humongous talent had carried her across the color line, in the demanding field of Grand Opera. She was the first of her race to manage this. This shameful insult to an entire race, prompted Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt to abandon the D. A. R., and hundreds followed in her wake. When my Aunt Crystal learned that Richmond IN was to be the next concert for Miss Anderson, she held a reception in her honor, at her home in Liberty, just 12 miles from Richmond. She carefully went over the guest list, selecting those she was sure would count it a special treat to meet this spectacular talent. The party was a smash! This was at a time when it was definitely not chic to be that way. Before the funeral, many of her students came by to report to us what a wonderful inspiration she had been in there lives! I just couldn't let the opportunity pass to give you an inkling of how special my Auntie was. Carl

    3. Thanks Bob for the Vet's remembrance~ Many O'Neall's in my family are Veteran's, my Dad was a WW2 Veteran, he always said he served on a mine sweeper as a signalman, and was at Nagasaki after the bomb. He didn't like to talk about it much but did tell me it was pretty intense. I have his separation papers and wonder is anyone can help me decipher their meaning: Under "Service~ Vessels and Stations Served on" it says: NTS, Farragut, Idaho (7mos) S.C.T.C. Terminal Island, Calif USS YMS-292 APL-27 SOP Service 102 Navy 3237 Under "Ratings Held" it says: AS, S2c, Slc, Cox Under "remarks" it says: American Area Victory Medal Asiatic Pacific (3 stars) Recruit Training 8 wks He entered the Navy on 3/13/43 and was separated honorably on 1/31/46, a few months later he met my Mom on a blind date and they got married right away. Any help you can give me understanding about his military service would be wonderful. I registered him on one of the Veteran's websites and would love to talk with anyone who served with him. Thanks, Jill ~Jill O'Neall Ching~ [email protected]
