All Rights Reserved | Subscription information may be found at the end of the newsletter. | | Please forward this to a friend who is interested in genealogy! | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | In This Issue | | The Publisher's Desk | Prince William's New Coat of Arms | GenExchange Adds Searchable Biography Database | U.S. Census Going Online | Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812 | Genealogy Software Report | Indiana Genealogy Web Ring | Western States Marriage Records Index - - Searchable! | Land Records Database - Searchable | From Our Readers | | ----------------------------------------------------------------- | | Thank you for all of the e-mails about the new AncestorNews.com Web | site. And, for your suggestions of new "how-to" articles to include, | as well as sites you nominated for the Genealogy Excellence Award. | | I'm working right now on a "how-to scan photos and upload them to the | Web" article. Hopefully it will be up by next weekend. If you have | any other suggestions, please let me know and I'll try to get them | posted as soon as possible. | | Starting tomorrow, a new article and photos by Jeanne Insalaco will | be | on the Web site. Read this fascinating tale of how a Connecticut | family researcher found more than she anticipated on a genealogy | search in Georgia! I won't spoil the surprise - - read about it on | the Web. | | As most of you know, the AncestorNews site was awarded the Family | Tree | Magazine Site of the Day in July, and I just received an email | yesterday that the "Original Cool Site of the Day" will be honoring | AncestorNews.com on August 18. It's great to know that people out | there are visiting the site, and hopefully benefiting from the | articles and links to family research. | | See you online! | | Nancy Hendrickson | Publisher, AncestorNews.com | stjoemo@pobox.com | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Prince William's New Coat of Arms | http://www.baronage.co.uk/bphtm-01/william1.html | | I read about Queen Elizabeth giving Prince William a new coat on arms | on his 18th birthday. Apparently William requested that the coat of | arms include the red scallop shell from Diana's Spencer coat of arms. | In all, William's new arms includes four of the shells. There's an | article and a picture of the arms on this Web site. | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | GenExchange Adds Searchable Biography Database | http://www.genexchange.org/biobin.cfm | | Wonder if there's a printed biography about one of your ancestors? | Thanks to GenExchange, you can now search their National Bio-Bin for | biographies posted to the project, regardless of what state or county | it was added to. | | You can search the Bio-Bin by surname, on both the state or county | levels. Currently, there are 10,500 biographies online, with more | being added daily. | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | U.S. Census Going Online | http://tako.sierra.com/gendb/signup.htmlw | | Have you read about the joint project between SierraHome's | "Generations" and Heritage Quest to post the entire U.S. census | online? | | In the fall 2000, they will be launching GenealogyDatabase.com, | featuring the exclusive online publication of the complete U.S. | Federal Census Schedules. "This extraordinary site will host the | massive 3.5 terabytes required to house every available census | schedule. That's 3,500 gigabytes or an estimated one-quarter of the | entire World Wide Web!", quotes Heritage Quest. | | Subscriptions information will be announced as details become | available. You can sign up at the URL above, for a notification of | when the census is available. | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812 | http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/8506/1812roster.html | | It seems I'm on a constant search for rosters from the War of 1812. | This page contains the names and ranks of a partial listing of the | rosters of Ohio soldiers who served in the War of 1812. More names | are being added as time permits, so check back. | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Genealogy Software Report | http://www.southernx.com.au | | | Thanks to our friends at Southern Cross Genealogy for posting this | interesting article on their AGI Newsletter. | | The Genealogy Software Report Card is designed to aid the | genealogical | researcher by providing an easy to use guide for the selection of a | software program. It can not answer the age old question, "What's | the | best program?" simply because it does not exist. The best one can | hope for is to find a piece of software that meets the majority of | your needs. The Report Card can narrow the search for that program. | | The Report Card is based on a Scorecard of over three hundred items. | These scorecards are available for each program, but you really need | to visit the site yourself and look at the details. You may not get | the best answer for YOU, if you just look at the totals. | | The Report Card does not, at present, report on any Mac programs. | Some excellent, specialist or more focused programs (like WebGed | Progenitor 2, BLAZONS ! or software for Palm handheld devices) are | not included. | | The programs measured and their rankings are | | 1. The Master Genealogist 74.1 | 2. Ultimate Family Tree 73.3 | 3. Legacy 70.9 | 4. Generations 63.8 | 5. Ancestral Quest 63.5 | 6. Family Origins 63.5 | 7. Family Ties 58.8 | 8. Family Tree Maker 57.3 | 9. PAF 57.6 | 10. Tree 55.3 | 11. Win Family 51.3 | 12. Family Tree Creator 43.1 | 13. Brothers Keeper 37.9 | 14. Family Tree Detective 20.4 | | Not many surprises here I think most people who have had a look at | these products would agree with the overall relative placing. There | is | no doubt in my mind that the sequence is pretty right, although I | have | to say that I would have expected BK for Windows better placed, and I | am surprised to see PAF anywhere on the list at all. | | The demise of Ultimate Family Tree has seen a massive defection of | probably 90% of the 100,000 world UFT users to TMG well, once you are | used to an Event based program like UFT, you wouldn't want to go | backwards to any other program like FTM or Reunion/Generations, no | matter how glossy the box in which it comes may be. | | Of course, it depends which version was tested and other matters, all | of which is detailed on the site itself, and very well done I might | add. So, the best thing is to take no notice of the total scores nor | my subjective comments, but to visit this very interesting site | yourself, and look at the scores for the options that YOU think are | important. What we have above is a total of various measures, and | obviously there are values on both sides that may make your choice | quite different - but on the whole, I | think the answer is right ! | | Scorecard items are assigned a value based on whether the item | concerned is considered basic, normal or exclusive. After a program | has been evaluated the scorecard values are converted to report card | points. The weight of the point values and the assignment of report | card points have the effect of indicating if the basic elements are | present and provides a broad range for the evaluation of additional | features. A program introducing new features is rewarded by the | weighted points assigned to such features. By indicating that these | features exist in specific units the user might then discount the | score for that unit should the feature be of no interest. | | If you'd like to find out how your favourite program rates, you | better | go and have a look your self. | | http://www.mumford.ab.ca/reportcard/index.htm | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Indiana Genealogy Web Ring | http://www.accessgenealogy.com/rings/in/ | | Are you a Indiana researcher, and do you have a Web page about | Indiana | genealogy? If so, you may want to join the Indiana Web Ring. | | Web Rings are informal gatherings of like-minded people who share a | common theme in Web sites. There are Web Rings for every subject | imaginable, including Stephen King books, Hobbits, Fantasy Fiction, | and Indiana Genealogy! | | Once you've joined a Web Ring, you can post a graphic on your page, | which shows an outline of the state of Indiana, as well as links to | other sites in this particular Web Ring. | | Detailed instructions on how to join are on the site. | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Western States Marriage Records Index - - Searchable! | http://abish.ricks.edu/fhc/gbsearch.asp | | | Wow, wow and wow! This is a fantastic site. To quote the information | in the "about this site" page: | | For the past decade, Ricks College Family History Center | has been extracting and indexing marriage records in several of | the western states including Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and Utah. | Additional work has been done in northern California, eastern | Oregon, eastern Washington and southwestern Wyoming. See | List of Counties by State for a more detailed list. As of 5 July | 2000, this file contains over 225,160 entries with additional | marriages added daily." | | If any of your family went West, be sure to bookmark this fantastic | resource. | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Land Records Database - Searchable | http://searches.rootsweb.com/regional.html | | This database, contributed by RootsWeb users, currently contains | 1,327,230 records (91055 distinct surnames). Not every state is | covered | in this database, but if your ancestors were in Ohio, Alabama, | Kentucky, California, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi or Missouri, | check this database. | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | From Our Readers | | From "Julian Islas 2" <jsislas@kconline.com> "I am looking for | Flannery or Music ancestors. I don't know too much about my father's | side which is the Flannery nam." | | From "Donna Reavis" <donnaiec@statesville.net> "I am looking for | ancestors of the Jessie Wyatt Family of Bakersville, or Micaville in | North Carolina also, ancestors of Parm Lee Duncan born 4-19-1860 in | Asheville, North Carolina, ancestors of Mattie Carroll born in | Bakersille area, NC. Thanks for any help you may give." | | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Each issue of AncestorNews may be distributed or reprinted for | non-profit use in full or in part, with credit as follows: | Copyright <c> 2000 Pony Express Publishing, | http://www.ancestornews.com. | | To subscribe, send any email to 1AncestorNews-subscribe@egroups.com | | To unsubscribe, send any email to | 1AncestorNews-unsubscribe@egroups.com | | | | | | Good luck in your research! | |
