    1. Attention Local History Buffs: Stewarts/Stuarts from the USA
    2. Doug Porteous
    3. Still trying to find out anything about my gg-grandmother, Margaret Porteous (nee Stewart or Stuart). She was born somewhere in the US circa 1823 (this according to a momument with her first name and that of her husband, George Porteous, at the Pine Grove Cemetery). The monument also indicates that she died in 1892. According to several Ontario censuses, she was of Irish descent. There is no death notice in the North Ontario Observer for late 1891, all of 1892 and early 1893. (actually, the December 22, 1892 issue is missing from the Ontario Archives microfilm - perhaps this is the issue that contained the death notice!). Apparently, a number of Americans migrated to Reach Township/Ontario County early on in its history. Perhaps her family left the area, and Margaret stayed behind to marry (or because she was married to) my gg-grandfather. The male children have "Porteous" names: William Simpsons and George, anyway, plus Mark, John and Robert Sidney), but perhaps the daughter's names are clues; they were: Amy Ann, Sarah Ann (died very young) and Silena Margaret. I got one helpful "nibble" as follows: "Hi Doug, I'm not an authority at all! But my Stewart's appear to have 'started' in New Jersey. They wound up in Ontario, went back to New York, some went back to Ontario, and the direct line I am searching left NY for Michigan in the 1840's." Thanks. --Doug
