Further re Stevens > Hi Stephen, My Steven line is descended from Roger1 Stevens cir 1700 from Wales. . .came to America courtesy of the transport system and worked as an indentured servant. We know he had 2 sons and those are the lines I am following as they and future families moved as a group. Roger2 and Benjamin were born in Quaker Hill, Dutchess Co., but moved and settled in Pittsford Vermont. . .Roger2's wifes brother had the patent and was responsible for bring in settlers. Two sons of Rogers2 (Abel & another Roger3) were "Tories" and had worked for the British during the Revolution. In 1784 Roger3 was granted land along the St Lawrence (he had joined Burgoyne's forces and worked as a secret agent) but he left this land and went inland just south of Bytown on the Rideau River. His brother Abel was granted 1/2 a township in the same area to bring in settlers. He went back to Vermont and talked most of his relatives and some neighbours into moving to Leeds. (Bastard Township). Now this is where Durham comes into it. A son of Benjamin . . .James Stevens. . . came to Upper Canada in 1794 and was supposededly the first settler of Hope Township. Elias Smith, who received 4800 acres for bringing in 50 families swore in 1806 "that James Stevens came 4th July 1794 and resided ever since in Upper Canada." He received land both for his wife (? Douglas) as a UE, and himself as a Military Claiment (secret agent) He had at least 12 children 1. David married Clarrisa 2. James C 3. Rufus 4. Hannah m Samuel Marvin of Hope 5.
