Greetings! Many of our family members, as well as their neighbours, came and settled in western Darlington Township (Durham County, Ontario, Canada) in the 1800s, after emigrating from either Devonshire or Cornwall (or both). For this reason, I hope you do not mind that I posted the same question to all three lists (Cornwall, Devon and Durham, Ontario, Canada), and now post some of the answers? Yesterday I asked a series of questions about helpful books. The following is a brief summary of some of the answers: 1. First, I found yet another GIMBLETT cousin (always thrilling). 2. A local Durham area author has "written a series of township histories." Let me know if anyone is interested in details, and I can forward your e-mail! (I prefer to have permission before posting details of private responses to mailing lists, even when I believe it would surely be all right.) 3. Reminders to check the published books available at CFHS (Cornwall Family History Society), especially the indexes including the New Zealand "Index of the 1851 census for Cornwall." Explanations how work is being done on indexes for other census years in Cornwall. 4. Specific books recommended on Cornwall and generally on genealogy: "Enquire Within" by Pauline Saul; "To Clothe the fields with Plenty - Memories of Cornish farming" "The Life of Henry Quick of Zennor" Books about the roseland area, by Hilary Thompson 5. Suggestion to try the web-site "Advanced Book Exchange" (and similar sites if available?). "The A.B.E. can find out of print books from dealers all over the world": http://www.abebooks.com/ 6. Offer to visit the Whitby (Durham) Library with an experienced researcher. Apparently Ontario's Whitby-Oshawa Genealogy Society have a large quantity of written family histories available in their section of this public library. To have someone along who knows many of the books already, this is a definite asset and much appreciated. This is really true for any library, isn't it? Moral of the story: make good use of the available human resources. This is especially true regarding local genealogical societies. Sometimes we need reminders to accept offers of help from the members of the genealogical societies of Cornwall, Devon and our Canadian Durham area: CFHS, DFHS and the Whitby-Oshawa branch of OGS in Canada.
