    3. Listers: About the post included below: Beaverton and Thorah Township ARE NOT and NEVER WERE in Durham County. Today, they are part of the Region of Durham, formed 25 years ago as a Regional Government. It was formed from the original Counties of Ontario and part of Durham. When searching for old records of places such as these, you should be looking for the original County names. These places were ONTARIO County, NOT Durham County. Many people confuse the old Durham County with the new Durham Region - two distinct territories with only some similarities. Similar restructuring has taken place in recent decades all over the province, and newer maps do not tell you the original names of the Counties and Townships. The OGS and some of the Branches have maps available showing the full range of old Counties, their townships and County Seat towns ( county towns as they were sometimes called). This map is invaluable when searching out the area where your ancestors lived, and in what place you might find OLD records. Folks searching for Ontario County records will likely have better luck with the Ontario County List, rather than the Durham County List, though many families spread out across both Counties. I hope this extra bit of information assists you in your search.
