Hello fellow researchers; I am wondering if anyone can help me. My ancestor Matilda Ann Fike was born 22 March, 1834 to John Fike and wife unknown at Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. I received the following from a website; Port Hope, Hope Twp, Northumberland Co (Currently Exists) - Originally an Indian village named Cochingomink; Was a fur trade post from 1778 and named for a time Smith's Creek (about 1760) Ok now my questions; Family folklore says that a great grandmother was indian. I am wondering if the reason I cannot find the name of Matilda's mother is if maybe she was the indian. Can anyone tell me what tribe of indian's were in Port Hope and how I should go about finding any records for this time period? Thanks Nora borts@gte.net
