I realize that Whitby is not in Durham county, but have been unable to find a mailing list for Ontario county. Has anyone come across the name RAY in the Whitby area? This family is no relation, but the family were good friends with my husband's aunt, who died 5 years ago at the age of 89 years. Therefore, a lot of antiques in our house originated from the RAY family. My earliest record is of William G. RAY and his wife Martha LUNDY. William was born in the US in 1792 and brought up a quaker. It is not known when this family moved to Canada, but they did appear in the 1861 census in Whitby Town. In the 1870's Charles RAY and his wife, the former Elizabeth McDERMID owned Whitby House Hotel and Livery Stables. Charles was a well known horseman and was a trainer of thoroughbreds. He had the distinction of winning the Grand National at Westchester, NY. Their son, Nathaniel RAY was quite famous in horseman. He started as a jockey and became a well known steeplechase rider and then turned to trotters, which he drove mainly on US tracks. Nat had a nasty fall at Roosevelt Raceway in the fall of 1952 and died at his summer home in Florida in March, 1953. I have many pictures of this family with their horses, should anyone have an interest. Kind regards Kathy Witheridge Sarnia, Ontario, Canada
