    3. I was able to solve the mystery that I wrote about in my earliest message that I originally posted at ONTARIO-L: "I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. My great-grandfather's youngest brother, Robert Sidney Porteous (born in Reach Township in 1862) was a long-time resident of Stratford, Ontario and was buried at the Avondale Cemetery in Stratford. He died in Owen Sound, Ontario on January 26, 1927 at the following address: 110 - 10th Street West. Are there any city directories or assessment roles for Owen Sound in 1927 that might tell me who was living at the above address at that time ......" I'm cc'ing ONDURHAM-L, CAN-ONT-PERTH-L and WELLINGTON-L since RS Porteous was born near Port Perry, lived in Stratford, Ontario for many years and was a resident of Kitchener, Ontario at the time of his death. The obits mention other people in Owen Sound, Kitchener, Epsom, Port Perry and elsewhere... 1. a Port Perry area native (one of the obits also mentions the name of a childhood friend from there) 2. long-time Stratford resident (and co-founder of the Porteous-McLagan Furniture Co.) 3. living in Kitchener, Ontario at the time of his death Robert Sidney Porteous collapsed in the doorway of a plumber's shop in Owen Sound, Ontario (now the Owen Sound Humane Society) and was taken to the address I mentioned, which was a building of doctors and dentists and only feet from where he had fallen. He died of a heart attack there while talking to the doctor (Dr. Gaviller). Apparently the weather on January 26, 1927 was extremely cold, and this may have aggravated his condition. RS had come up from Kitchener on the "noon train" and had checked into the Seldon House, now the Coach House, upon his arrival. He was walking back there from business with the North American Furniture Co. earlier in the day when he had his initial attack. My dad mentioned that he had met a bank manager from the area several decades ago. I've determined this was Harry Meredith Porteous, Robert Sidney Porteous' son. Harry died in Collingwood in 1976, and had been a manager of the CIBC in various towns for many years. Harry had been shot in a bank robbery in 1930; the bullet was never removed. I have obits for both RS and HM at my Web site: they make for interesting reading (at least from my perspective :) ) Cheers. --Doug http://members.home.com/dporteous/letters.html
