Sorry to send this to the list but I have misplaced an e-mail address. I recently came across this information that would prove that William B. is a member of the Thomas and Mary Jane Johnston family and I thought you might be interested. William' Pension Papers show his name as Willam Cascodden/Carscadden They are primarily affidavits from his wife, Maranda Carscadden of the village of Orono, Township of Clarke, County of Durham, Ontario, Canada. She lists her husband as William B. Carscadden. An affidavit by Lucinda Gilfillan lists the name as Cascadan and Miranda's maiden name as Sipparo and states that William and Mirandy had a son names Benson Gifford Carscadden on Oct 4 1863 in the township of Clarke. Another affidavit is from William 's mother, Mary Robbins. She stated first that she was the mother of the said William B. Carscadden by her first husband Thomas Carscadden and then she mentions that she had another son by the name of George. It seems that no one heard from William for some time and figured that he must of died while in the army. This is why Miranda was trying to get his pension as a means of support. The war department records state that he was mustered out with a detachment of Co. at Chester, PA., June 21 1865. While in the army he had been in the hospital at a time or two. Since they had no record of any further disability, Miranda's claim was denied. Durham County Newspaper Index William of California Left Clarke 37 yrs before visited sister Mrs. James Gibson (Eliza Carscadden) 1902 Oct. 16-ON C48149 William Carscadden came back to Orono to visit brothers George and Jim who had since moved 1902 Oct. 16-ON C48148 "Mr. Wm. Carscadden of California, another old Clarke boy, is here on a visit to his sister's, Mrs. James Gibson, after an absence of 37 years. He came expecting to find his brothers George and Jim still residing here, not having heard from them since leaving here." After reading the above it seems that William abandoned his wife and family and took up a life in California not coming home until 1902 after his wife had passed away. As it turns out the William B. Carscadden who was actually in the Army was not Marandi's husband but another William B. Carscadden. So no one knows for sure what William was doing while he was suppose to be in the army. Apparently there is no record for him. Let me know what you think. Steph
