    1. Thank You! -- Re: Browser qst

    3. Thank you! A big "Thank You!" to all those Durham area genealogists who answered my browser question within the past week! The total responses were excellent, and many specific problems and solutions were discussed. This is a quick summary for those were interested in all the responses which came in. (If you are interested in more details, you are welcome to write back to terras@vianet.on.ca .) Although not directly related to genealogy, it did seem to strike a chord with many, perhaps because of troubles accessing some of the genealogical sites. In general, we were warned to carefully stay away from too many fancy "bells and whistles" at our website at http://www.dentistnet.org/terras/ -- some suggested plain websites to accommodate everyone, while others suggested specific technical solutions. The following are some observations about the different types of browsers people are using, and how these different browsers can cause potential problems: - Some users have no problems visiting any webpage at all, because they have the latest browser (Netscape 4 or 5, Internet Explorer 4+). - Some have the latest browser, but have chosen to turn off the Java, the sound, even the graphics. Reasons for this included security concerns, distraction, or speed of downloading pages. Also, not everyone wants to see all those fancy gismoes and pages. - Others have an old browser where the graphics pages come in excruciatingly slowly, or where the browser crashes (especially because of some java-script). - Others cannot access certain pages, or else they see them in a completely different way than the web-designer intended. - Finally, others either have some other browser than either Netscape or IE, and a few don't even have Windows. These results are unpredicable unless the page is text-only. Food for thought! Meanwhile, thank you again! All your responses were much appreciated!
