Hello All I have been getting much e-mail asking for the same information, so I'm going to post this to the list. I guess my last posting came out kind of crazy & maybe everyone thought I was looking for a home or my way out. <VBG> Just a note when I found a family member buried quite far from where the rest of the family was (Richmond Hill Ont.) I called the cemetery. They told me that this person would have been part of the old Ontario Hospital system. I then asked what hospital he would have been in & they said Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. You just never know ..... http://www.gov.on.ca/health/ Whitby Mental Health Centre 700 Gordon St. P.O. Box 613 Whitby ON L1N 5S9 Fax: (905) 430-4032 Note there is no regular phone number listed<VBG> Then I was given phone numbers to the Lakeridge Health Corp. 668-6831 & 668-5881 I do hope this helps others & I promise to let this machine catch up to my typing in the future. <VBG> Heather
Good Morning All Would anyone have any information on the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital? Is it still around I can't find a phone or address for it. If it was removed, does anyone know what happened to the records? Thank You in advance. Heather

We are very pleased to announce the GRAND OPENING of the first website dealing specifically with the Loyalists of the American Revolution to combine genealogy, military history and living history. The On-Line Institute for Advanced Loyalist Studies (Royalprovincial.com) is the collaborative effort of Todd Braisted of New Jersey and Nan Cole of Illinois. Todd is an independent researcher with an extensive background in Loyalist military studies. Nan is a genealogist and researcher and hosts both a Loyalist and a Canadian genealogy chat group. This project was started in April of 1999 with the goal of providing detailed, accurate Loyalist information to anyone who might have an interest. The site is not intended to serve as an introduction to what a Loyalist is, but rather is a place for those who are seeking detailed, specific information about individual Loyalist regiments or soldiers. The site is broken down into several major areas: History, Military, Genealogy, Reenacting and Miscellaneous. Among the original information to be found is a complete listing of all known Loyalist units that existed between 1775 and 1784, and a chronological list of battles and engagements during the war, along with the Loyalist units that took part in each. There are hundreds of transcribed documents, including courts martials, muster rolls, orderly books, regimental correspondence, deserter descriptions, battle reports, newspaper accounts, songs, poems, memorials, land grant petitions, intelligence reports, clothing returns, church records, Black Loyalist materials, proclamations, recruiting notices, Rebel accounts of Loyalists, distributions, and women’s documents. Our on-line research address book provides addresses, hours of operation, phone numbers and website links to the major research centers for Loyalist manuscript materials and genealogies and will be expanded in the future to include additional repositories, churches, organizations and societies of interest to Loyalist researchers. In the Reenacting section you will be able to learn about Living History and the groups that portray the Loyalists today, see photos of the groups and of past events, and find out how to get in touch with the group of your choice. Plus much, much more… While the site currently contains over 1,000 pages of information, it is by no means complete. The amount of information planned for the future is more than double the amount currently on-line. So, if you do not find information on the individual or group you are looking for now, please stop back soon, as we will be updating things on an ongoing basis. You can also sign up to receive a free monthly notification of the new materials that have been added. To celebrate our grand opening, we will be conducting a special “Loyalist contest” on Monday, February 7th, our first day live. It costs nothing to enter and will give you a chance to test your knowledge (or just get lucky and guess right!) to win a small prize. Please stop by for details and enter! And while you are there, take a minute to sign our Guestbook or post a message or query on our Genealogy or History Message Boards. We look forward to greeting our visitors and assisting them with their Loyalist questions. Please follow this link/address to enter our site. Thanks! Hi Steph; It would appear that William Carscadden moved to California and it was 37 years before he returned to visit his sister, Mrs. James Gibson and brothers George and Jim. Here is what there is on Eliza: CARSCADDEN, Eliza - born Aug 14, 1832, in Fermanagh, Ireland and settled in Clarke, in 1837, married on Feb 26, 1850 (nee Mrs. William Elliott) CARSCADDEN, Eliza - died in Clarke, on Oct 6, 1917, aged 76 years and 9 months (nee Mrs. James Gibson) CARSCADDEN, Eliza - died in Manvers on May 19, 1906, aged 73 years and 9 months. Mother of George - Midland & Wesley (nee Mrs. William Elliott). Mother of John Elliott of Bowmanville Some of it doesn't make much sense, but I have typed it just how it is in the index. Here are some little clippings from the book 'Out of the Mists' - A History of Clarke Township by Helen Schmid and Sid Rutherford: Page 241 - It is talking about the Johns' Sawmill near Orono .......... "Freeman Andrus and James Carscadden were foremen in this mill. James was also employed in the cooper shop for many years (where the staves were turned into barrels). When he died in 1925 he had been employed making barrels for the fruit house on the town line, and had made his home with the Gibson family." Page 141 - Talking about local Inns ..........."John Carscadden had the 'Queens Arms'." Page 200 - "Some of the local merchants in Kendal in 1857 were: Dean Carscadden, carpenter." Page 201 - "Up to 1867 there was only one hotel and John Carscadden opened the second one that year." Page 170 - "The Carscadden family came from Ireland to Newtonville and followed the trail to the sixth line where they built their first home. Soon the rebellion of 1837 broke out. Mr. Carscadden and Mr. Ard, shouldered their gunds and walked to Toronto, only to find William Lyon McKenzie had fled to the US.......men like Ard and Carscadden obviously were rebel supporters of William Lyon McKenzie and responsible government." Hope that this might be of some interest to you. Kind regards Kathy Witheridge Sarnia, Ontario, Canada

Good evening all; I am searching for a date of death and place of burial for Levi Edwards. Born about 1860 in Cramahe, Northumberland Cty, he married Mary Loucinda Williams. Their children were John Edwards b 1884, Eva Elizabeth b1886, Laura Edwards b 1890, Lena Edwards b 1892 and Mabel b 1894. There may be more children. There has been quite a number of people asking where the 'Durham County Newspaper Index' could be purchased. Go to this site: http://www.osha.igs.net/%7Edandelong/ogswo.htm This is the site of the Whitby/Oshawa branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. It lists all the publishings available. I have been a member of this branch for many years, and it has been a great help to me in my research. Give it a try! Kind regards Kathy Witheridge Sarnia, Ontario, Canada
Hi Alan... I have a tie in with the FEE family in Emily. The sister of my great-grandmother married into the FEE family. Joseph FEE, (son of James FEE and Eliza Jane BEATTY) born 23 July 1846 married Annie WEBSTER (daughter of Abraham WEBSTER and Maria HENDERSON) born 3 March 1856. They married 25 June 1879. Their children: Arthur Webster FEE born 8 Sept 1881 died 31 Oct 1904 Abraham Bertram FEE born 20 Jan 1886 died 1978 married Emily Francesca BLAUMAN 1912. (My grandfather John Everett SMYTH's family was visited by "cousin Bertie" at Mt Pleasant, Brant County in the 1920s) Joesph Beatty FEE born 3 March 1889 died 1979 married Sarah Mabel CURTIS 1912. James FEE born 3 Nov 1891 died 1978 married Annie (Dot) SHIELD Frederick Newton FEE born 28 Aug 1895 married Jean Ester LEE Joseph & Annie FEE took over the WEBSTER farm at Mt Pleasant, Cavan Township after Abraham WEBSTER's death in 1895 & Maria's death in 1897. I think the family still owns the farm to this day. It had been originally granted to Thomas & Elizabeth WEBSTER from Wexford Ireland in 1822. There were numerous FEE relatives of Joseph (& James) FEE in Emily Township & Cavan Township. I saw a local history book for the area (the name of escapes me) that describes the ancestry of various families in Durham/Emily & the FEES trip from Ireland is recounted giving the names of the children & who they married etc. It mentions the family back to the 1700s. I made photocopies of the pages, but of course I can't find them! It seems that when you are looking for something you can never find it, but when you aren't its right there! I'll find it if you are interested or don't already have that info.
