    3. Hi Astrid... I have an ancestor who seems to come from Cornwall who seems to have settled (at least temporarily at Port Hope in Durham County). Joseph SEARLE date of birth currently unknown but both in Cornwall, married Mary Ann TRIM (another Cornwall/Devon surname) and had at least 3 sons: George SEARLE b:1844 Port Hope, Henry SEARLE b:1845 Port Hope and Samuel Trim SEARLE. They all seem to have found their way to Guelph, Ontario by the 1860s. George SEARLE has a baker by trade. I havent had a chance to trace this branch as much as I would like, but was intrigued by your mentioning that there were some other Cornish folks in the same area. Also, they seem to have been Roman Catholic. Anyone have any leads for these guys? 1. Thank You for Your Answers! (Re: Helpful books?)
    2. Astrid Terras
    3. A big "Thank you!" to the individuals who answered my query. The time and thought you took to answer my questions has been much appreciated. I love the atmosphere of generosity and shared interests in these communities. I am attempting to write a relatively brief family history on our STACEY family of Devonshire and of Canada (who lived near and married several of their Cornish neighbours) and to finish a first draft relatively soon. In the search for a good "voice" for my own writing I am therefore also interested in finding family history and local history books which are both genealogically valuable as well as an appealing read. And good local books can indeed provide invaluable "meat for the Bones." So, again, thank you very much for sharing your favourites. Much appreciated! 2. Astrid Terras
    3. About Books!!! I'm looking over my most well-used mailing lists (Cornwall and Devon in England; Durham County in Ontario, Canada) and I have some bookish ;^) questions for all three groups: Which kind of books (if any) have been the most helpful in your genealogy and/or family history search and where or how did you find them? Which kind of books have been the least helpful? Specifically, have many of you found local history or family history books which applied to you? And how difficult was it to find these? And how much did they really help you (if at all) and in which way(s)? Or were they entertaining in some way, even if not specifically helpful??? Thanks much! No one has replied to any of the postings on any of the lists I posted it too. I received to emails asking me to let them know if I found out anything. I have read the odd email about these books, one with a blue cover and another with a green cover, but no one has replied that they have actually seem a copy. 3. Hi all: Following on the Johnston thread, I have a Mary Johnston, marrying John Bruce, I believe in Fermanagh and settling in Cartwright Twp. My sources indicated they sailed in June, 1840 with several children and they were 13 weeks crossing the Atlantic. John died of a fever shortly after his arrival and Mary, with her children, farmed in the Devitt's Settlement. Upon her death, she was buried, next to John, in Cavan. Does anyone see any connections? Thanks. Ron

    3. Thanks Michael for your reply. I am hoping to find some other members of either family that could ultimately point me in the direction as to where they came from in Fermanagh, Ireland. That they had connected up with some part of either family, the JOHNSTON's or the HALL's that were already in Cartwright or that came over with them and stayed in Cartwright. The other Hall's I have heard of in Cartwright Twp were from County of Armagh, Ireland, and so don't think they're connnected. Maybe I'm going about it the wrong way. Any suggestions from anyone out there? Bonnie

    1. Johnston family/Cartwright Twp
    2. ...re Bonnie's Johnston family... there are lots of maps of Cartwright and other Durham County townships on the Genweb site...there is an 1851 census of Cartwright which may be of some help...I had a quick look at the 1844 assessment, there were both a John and a Robert Johnston at Concession 5, Lot 5...perhaps these were earlier arrivals of the same family???... ...Michael Stephenson -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Victoria County Genweb Page Host - http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/5715/Victoria/index.htm Durham County Genweb Page Host - http://www.geocities.com/Soho/Gallery/5715/Durham/index.html Northumberland County Genweb Page Host - http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/5715/Northumberland/index.html Genealogical and Historical Database for Upper Canada Research - http://members.tripod.com/~VictoriaCounty/Research.html Genealogical Researcher for Victoria, Peterborough, Northumberland & Durham, Haliburton, Hastings, and Ontario Counties. 3. Although my family of John JOHNSTON & Catherine Isabel HALL continued on to Turnberry Twp, Huron County, eventually - they were in the Cartwright district of Durham County sometime between 1851 when they left Ireland and 1861 when they showed up on the Census in Turnberry Twp. We know this because their eldest son Robert John JOHNSTON joined the "Loyal Orange Lodge No. 276, at Cartwright, County of Durham, District of Cartwright in Ontario on January 3, 1854." And that he received some type of certificate from this same lodge on Dec. 4, 1857, stating he was a member in good standing etc., possibly for the purpose of transferring to another lodge in Huron County? The family is as follows: John JOHNSTON b. approx. 1809 Ireland + Catherine Isabel HALL b. 1813, Enniskillen, County of Fermanagh Their children, all born in Ireland, but no proof that it was Fermanagh 1. Robert John JOHNSTON b. 3 June 1836/37 2. William JOHNSTON b. 1838 3. Isabella JOHNSTON b. 1842 4. Jane JOHNSTON b. 1846 5. Mary JOHNSTON b. 1850 Members of Church of Ireland/ then Church of England. Family immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1851/1852. Is anyone else connected to this family?? Also is District of Cartwright the Township of Cartwright? Was there a town of Cartwright also. It would be helpful to know where in the District of Cartwright that they were. Thanks for any help. Bonnie Henderson Alberta

Address to Aunt Jane (Robbins) from Clara Cameron, Vachell, Ont. I think or hope that this is from Durham Co., I know that their are Robbins and Pethick's who settled in the area.
