    1. Matilda Fike > 1834> Port Hope, Ontario, Canada
    2. borts
    3. Hello fellow researchers; I am wondering if anyone can help me. My ancestor Matilda Ann Fike was born 22 March, 1834 to John Fike and wife unknown at Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. I received the following from a website; Port Hope, Hope Twp, Northumberland Co (Currently Exists) - Originally an Indian village named Cochingomink; Was a fur trade post from 1778 and named for a time Smith's Creek (about 1760) Ok now my questions; Family folklore says that a great grandmother was indian. I am wondering if the reason I cannot find the name of Matilda's mother is if maybe she was the indian. Can anyone tell me what tribe of indian's were in Port Hope and how I should go about finding any records for this time period? Thanks Nora borts@gte.net

    1. EARLY/EARLEY, Clarke Twp.
    2. Linda Tymura
    3. Hello All, I'd like to introduce the following names to the Durham list - possibly they ring a bell in somebody else's research...I've nearly given up using search engines/find features trying to locate the name....Have you ever tried searching "Early" on a history list??? Even 'Smith' would return fewer hits! There's 'early settlers', 'early pioneers, 'early history', early everything it seems, except my family! I have a gggrandfather - Francis EARLY/EARLEY (b. 1810 Co. Down, Ire.) came to Canada approx. 1824; mar. Margaret DELONG (b. 1819 Ont. dau of Francis DELONG & Esther ADAMS) about 1834. Francis EARLY & Margaet DELONG settled in Clarke Twp, Durham (I have him on the 1856 Assessment Roll at S half lot 30, con. 6, Clarke and at the same location on Tremaine's 1861 map.) Children of Francis EARLY & Margaret DELONG were: Maria b.1835, m. John LAWLESS of Bondhead (Newcastle) William b.1837 m. Mary BURNS of Ops, Victoria Co. Margaret b.1839 m. Francis HUMPHREY of Manvers, Durham Co. James b.1842 never married, d. 1903 in Winnipeg Esther b.1843 Francis b.1847 Robert F. b. 19 July 1849 m. Clara TUFTS of Welland Gideon b. aft. 1848 Edward b. aft. 1848 All these children are believed to have been born in Clarke. Margaret DELONG died sometime between 1851 & 1861 and husband, Francis moved to Thorold around 1870. Francis EARLY is on the 1871 census in North Thorold with children James, Esther, Robert and Margaret. I'd like to ask any list members who have come across these names to please contact me or if anyone has access to any indexes please keep these names in mind. Thanks a million! Linda Tymura, Dryden, Ont.

I am in contact with members of the family in Virden, but they are elderly and I have had no luck. I have tried searching websites, every book on the area. There is mention of the 4 siblings in the Durham Newspaper Index, but not their parents. Where to go next. I am desperate to find information on this family. Advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Steph

Soon the rebellion of 1837 broke out..............." Tremaine's 1861 Map Transcription, shows: Carscadden, Deborah - Lot 29, Conc., 9 in Clarke Twp Carscadden, James - Lots 16,17,20, Conc., 7 in Clarke Twp Carscadden, John - Lot 11, Conc., 7 in Clarke Twp Carscadden, Richard - Lot 15, Conc., 8 in Clarke Twp Carscadden, Richard - Lot 15, Conc., 7 in Clarke Twp Carscadden, Robert - Lot 18, Conc., 7 in Clarke Twp Carscadden, T - Lots 15,16, Conc., 7 in Clarke Twp If you obtain some of the deeds relating to the above parcels of land, they might well provide an abundance of information. Sometimes, Wills are on title too. I believe I already gave you the Carscadden Wills in the possession of the Ontario Archives. In the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid, there are 55 members of the Carscadden families mentioned. Hope that this might assist you. Kind regards Kathy Witheridge Sarnia, Ontario, Canada
