Listers: About the post included below: Beaverton and Thorah Township ARE NOT and NEVER WERE in Durham County. Today, they are part of the Region of Durham, formed 25 years ago as a Regional Government. It was formed from the original Counties of Ontario and part of Durham. When searching for old records of places such as these, you should be looking for the original County names. These places were ONTARIO County, NOT Durham County. Many people confuse the old Durham County with the new Durham Region - two distinct territories with only some similarities. Similar restructuring has taken place in recent decades all over the province, and newer maps do not tell you the original names of the Counties and Townships. The OGS and some of the Branches have maps available showing the full range of old Counties, their townships and County Seat towns ( county towns as they were sometimes called). This map is invaluable when searching out the area where your ancestors lived, and in what place you might find OLD records. Folks searching for Ontario County records will likely have better luck with the Ontario County List, rather than the Durham County List, though many families spread out across both Counties. I hope this extra bit of information assists you in your search. Anyone interested in using the 1851 Ontario Directory as a resource, Linda Adair has posted a notice to the Niagara list that she is scanning it to put on her website. You can check out her beginning efforts at the following url: http://members.home.net/lyna/lyna/1851_ontario_directory.htm By clicking on the Port Hope link I pulled up a page with Marshall, Beamish & Trick surnames. I haven't searched all the linked pages, but, there's bound to be lots of good leads. FYI Linda

Hi Frank & List, Here from the Abstract Index Books 1800-1859, Registrar of Deeds, Clarke Twp. V. 1-2. are the land transaction details for the period of time when the Bigham family had interest in the property. I'm not an authority on interpreting such documents, so I give it to you as I transcribed it from the film. I'm posting this to the list in case someone can assist in any interpretation or on the off-chance one of the other individuals' names interests another lister. Also, anyone who might want to know the contents of the microfilm...what you see below is basically what you get. For further reference, the LDS film # is 197648. >From the book, Genealogy in Ontario (auth. Brenda Merriman), the index books are described as being created in 1865 retroactively to the date of patent. Dear List, I made a request to http://ancestralfindings.genealogy.org for a lookup (They will do one free lookup a day ) on " Canadian Genealogy Index, 1600s -1900s" ( CD118). I was looking for my 2nd great grandparents, Charles and Jane Baker Manning, who lived in or near Bowmanville in Durham Co. prior to moving to Illinois in 1848. I received a long list of results, but none were MY Mannings..... If anyone is looking for a C. Manning or a J. Manning in Canada or Alaska, I would be glad to share this listing with them. There was a listing for Whitby, I've heard that mentioned on the list although I don't know where it is. > Manning, J. Hi Karen; There is an excellent site at the Canadian Archives which is all about 'Home Children': { SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1}"List of Home Children _ I know that quite a few people are researching "Home Children", relatives who, as small children were brought to Canada through homes in Britain like Dr. Barnardos. There is an excellent site "Young Immigrants to Canada, including Juveniles and Home Children", a site which cannot be missed if you are researching these areas. http://www.archives.ca/exec/naweb.dll?brs?02011002|e|top|0 Although the HOME CHILDREN program did not begin until 1869, the date is close enough to our cut off date of 1867 to include this database URL on the list. I am researching my husband's Virtue ancestry. Robert Virtue and his wife Philina Morrison came to the Enniskillen region of Darlington Township in what I now think would likely be the 1830's from Enniskillen, N. Ireland. They had eleven children and I have been able to find that seven of them were born in Ireland or Scotland. There was a son Charles who died April 23, 1853 at age 20 and I don't know if he was born in Ireland or Canada. Also I would like to find out more about Hanna Virtue who married a Charles Floody (two children Edward and Matthew and they seemed to have resided at Blythe, Ont.); Philina Virtue who married a Charles Chambers and had one son Edward; and Margaret Virtue who married a Charles Sherret and who also lived at Blythe. By the way, where is Blythe - at all close to Enniskillen? Hopefully somebody out there can help me or point me in the right direction to find out the information I am looking for. Leah Joys
Contact the Bowmanville Museum. It has a Virtue genealogy completed some years ago by a woman in Florida.
