Living next door is a James WRENHAM with wife Sarah, children Sharlotte Ann, John James, Sarah (all b. England). I find Wrenham, Hill and Montgomery men married into the family of John and Adelia (KETT) OXBY of neighboring Victoria Co. I would like to contact anyone researching these surnames or families in Durham or Victoria Co - 1840 to present. Are there birth records available that might help me to identify father of George? Greetings Durham Ontario Listers! I wonder if the following question will bring excitement and vigour to this List, or just groans and moans? If you have an older browser, such as Netscape 2.0, do you have many problems accessing home pages on the internet (i.e., where your browser crashes or you simply cannot see the page)??? Or do most of you have version 4 or higher of either Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer? The reason I am asking, is because I am just setting up a new homepage which is hopefully of some interest to fellow genealogists and writers (therefore your input is especially sought after). Meanwhile, my web-designer is wondering how sophisticated he can make the home page. Older browsers sometimes cannot support the latest html-language or Java-script, etc. If you are puzzled, amazed, concerned, intrigued, or just plain interested (i.e., in testing the specific homepage) or if you have any other questions or info, please e-mail me at terras@vianet.on.ca ! Thank you much! Astrid Terras Newstead terras@vianet.on.ca Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada p.s. if interested, I can return a summary of the answers to this List!
Recently while digging through a collection of old books I found an 11 page typescript entitled "History of Village of Hampton" by Mary J. E. Katerson, prepared for the Woman's Institute, 1945. I have little interest in Hampton myself but knowing how fragile local history is and how easily it can be lost, I do not want this information to be destroyed. I had hoped to return the manuscript to the family of the author, but there are no Katersons listed in the local phone directory. Can anyone offer a suggestion or does anyone want to take over responsibility for this rather tatty old typescript? Eric Bowler, Toronto

Hi! The book "The Rolling Hills" edited by Mrs. Ross N. Carr and published by The Manvers Township Council in 1967, pages 89 & 90, mentions the following: "According to an excerpt taken from The Orono News of February 23rd, 1899, the little Manvers settlement came by its name in this wise: "Joseph Porter who came into the township in 1820, hailed from Ballyduff in Ireland. When, therefore, a meeting was held to name the place and a local tavern-keeper named Harrison desired to immortalize himself by christening it Harrisville, he was opposed by Mr. Porter and others, who by a majority vote said the name should be Ballyduff, in honor of the famous Irish town from near many of them came."" As far as business' go, these are mentioned in the same chapter. [The book is not indexed] "The Ballyduff Hotel was owned by William Steel and two others are mentioned in early records, The Benson House, The Bannister Hotel. Templeton Bros. had a general store advertising groceries, clothing, millinery and dry goods. Later, Mrs. Elizabeth Bannister had a general store for many years, which after her death was taken over by her brother, John Porter...... John Graham ran a chair factory. Ballyduff Cheese factory was situated close to Porter Mitchell's property." An 1880 Directory of Manvers [by E. E. Dodds & Bro.] lists the following people who have Ballyduff as their Post Office address. (The balance were farmers and labourers) Thomas Morrow, shoemaker, 1 acre, south part lot 11, con. 6 owner, Ballyduff Porter, Charles, blacksmith, 1/4 acre, southeast part lot 10, con. 6, owner, Ballyduff Templeton, John, merchant, 3? 1/4 northeast part lot 10, con. 5, tenant, Ballyduff Templeton, Archibald, merchant, 3 1/4 northeast part lot 10, con. 5, tenant Ballyduff Williamson, James P.?, agent, 1/2? acre, northeast part lot 10, con. 5, owner, Ballyduff A search of the 1871 census of Manvers using the lot and concession numbers would probably also furnish you a list of people for that time period. Happy Hunting! Stephen
Hello list, Can anyone provide me with information about Ballyduff in Manvers township. who founded it and when. What businesses were there in the 1800's and who were the proprietors. Thanks Rod
Greetings! A follow-up for researchers of the Darlington Township families of HOGARTH, LAW, ELFORD, STACEY (and dozens of other families related by marriage): I just received a very gracious "Thank You" letter from the Bowmanville Museum Board regarding the "Hogarth Papers" recently deposited there. I quote: "The historically significant information you have provided on the Hogarth, Law, Elford, and Stacey families will be safely filed in our Goodyear: Bowmanville Plant Archives. Rest assured that the papers will be taken care of, while at the same time available to interested researchers." These papers include ten generations of the HOGARTH family, including the five generations known to have descended through the pioneering "Widow Hogarth" of Solina. The family seemed to have intermarried into just about every other family in the area throughout the 1800s, especially with families with 19th century ties to Darlington Township. The papers are a genealogical treasure, with several contributors, but most are attributed to the late Claude E.L.H. LAW of Manitoba and are now available at the Bowmanville Museum and Archives. I am also willing and able to do look ups, although only some of the many family groups have been entered on my computer and are therefore not all easily searchable. Since we will be spending a day in the area around Enniskillen to view the area where my husband's mother Martha Virtue originally had her roots, I wonder if there are still Virtues living in the region - perhaps on the original Crown Land Grant (Concession 8, Lots 17 & 18) granted to Robert Virtue and his wife Philina (Morrison) who had come to Enniskillen from Enniskillen in Fermanagh County in N. Ireland. Martha's grandfather was Archibald Virtue (1815 - 1891), he being one of eleven children of Robert and Philina, and he was married to Martha Hillier (1833-1886). Their children were Elizabeth who married John Stainton, Philina who married Dr. Robert A. Lee, William who married Annie Thompson, Edward who married Flora Smith, my mother-in-law's father Robert who married Elizabeth Strong born in Bowmanville in 1856 and John (Jack) Virtue(1866-1921) who married Laura Hamley (1875 - 1950). From looking at maps showing the location of families in Darlington Township, the names of the families the siblings married into appeared to have resided in the township. Just the oldest of Robert Virtue's children was born in Enniskillen; the rest of the children I believe were born in Orillia and then the family moved to Manitoba. I would appreciate any suggestions in regards to possible Virtues still living in the region. Leah Joys Medicine Hat, AB

My gg grandfather, William Orr fell off a church and died while putting the roof on it. I know that he lived in Cavan, Ontario (what became Millbrook). I am wondering if there are any newspaper accounts of his death, the church name. Any suggestions of where to look? I think he died around 1882. Sharon
Good evening all, Emily (Baily, Edwards) WHITE, wife of Corby White; her daughter Effie (Edwards) WEBB and her husband Robert Webb, all lived in Udora in the 1950's early 1960's. Emily, Corby and Robert died in the mid to late 50's and were apparently buried in the Sunderland Cemetary. Effie died in about 1960-61 and was also buried there. My problem is that although I have been told they were buried there, I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to retrieve any documentation that would provide me with dates of death etc., so my search can continue. If anyone has any old cemetary records around that may give me some further information to go on, I would love to hear from you. Thanks. Sharon Parent wsparent@csolve.net
Loretta: They say that change is good for us - whoever said that wasn't searching for ancestors!!! Old Durham County and Northumberland County (the united counties) primarily made up the OLD Newcastle District. This district stretched from the eastern boundary of Ontario County to about Belleville - it was primarily a Judicial District, but also served as a School District as well. Bowmanville was in Darlington Township, Durham County. As far as old maps go - you could try asking the archivist at the Ontario Archives. There are a number of old maps on file there, but I don't know what size they are, or how much a photocopy would be (if there is such a thing). The Bowmanville Museum has a copy of Tremaine's 1861 map of the County, showing the township boundaries as well as the names of the people who resided on the various lots in each township - does not include the "townies" names, other than those business people from each community that sponsored the map (listed around the edges). Contact the Museum at: <bm.chin@durham.net> I think the maps are about $6.00 Sher Leetooze, Bowmanville, Ont. p.s. - I've sent this response to the list rather than to you privately, because I think a lot of people are confused by the constantly changing place names, and need all the help they can get. >Thank you for the clarification.
