Hi everyone: I was talking to Carol Anthony-Pickings, the coordinator of the Brookside cemetery today. This is what she basically said. They only have a partial list of the damage stones. Many that are down are face down and are not sure who they are yet. She made the following suggestion for now. For us to get out to the different links and ask people if they have any loved ones or know or anyone that has loved ones or ancestors that are buried in the cemetery. They are contacting ones that they are able. People can contact her by phoning 902 543-4651. This is the town office number and ask for Carol Anthony Pickings. They can also email her at: recreation@town.bridgewater.ns.ca. Keep in mind this past week or more we have had comments all over Canada and the US. Somehow we should advertise this to all other possible links. I use two other links the Cape Breton Link and the Newfoundland. I was going to put them on right now; but I goofed the last time I went to place all four lists on at once. Any suggestions how we get to others? Are there volunteers that could help? It could be funnelled through me or maybe Nova Scotia Links could receive a cc so we would know what areas are covered. Please let me know how this should be done but not a lot of emails about it. Let's not flood the email lines. That's all for now Cheers, Wilf ==== LUNEN-LINKS Mailing List ==== Go ahead and post your query - we're all related on this list <grin>

Good evening list, I am looking for some answers and thought someone on the list may be able to help. I am having a very difficult time in finding the burial information on what I know to be a person by the name of Effie WEBB. She apparently died in the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital at Easter of 1960 or 1961 and was subsequently buried in the Sunderland Cemetary. There is a corner stone in this cemetary that would indicate this. I contacted the cemetary some time ago, requesting her date of death etc., so that I could send for a copy of her death registration. The cemetary informed me then, that no records existed for that period. I contacted the Registrar General giving the information that I had and the search came back as nil. I then contacted the Uxbridge Cottage Hosp (now Lakefield) providing them with her married name, given names, her mother's maiden name, and her date of birth (from her birth registration). They have been unable to locate any person going back 40 years with that name nor that date of birth, that died in that hospital. They are at this time looking further but I am not hopeful. I do thank them for their time and efforts. This leaves me in a real quandary. If she died and was buried under that name, why are there no records in that name? Why can the date of birth not match up with the date of death? My question is this - is there some form of Association or government Organization, that has holdings of all of the cemetary or burial records for the province, submitted by the various municipalities on a yearly or bi yearly basis? and would these be indexed by year or municipality? I require this information and am at a loss where to look next. If she was buried under a false name and birthdate, is that legal? and how can one go about finding out the ifs and why's? Any suggestions would be of great help, Thanks Sharon Parent wsparent@csolve.net

Thank you! A big "Thank You!" to all those Durham area genealogists who answered my browser question within the past week! The total responses were excellent, and many specific problems and solutions were discussed. This is a quick summary for those were interested in all the responses which came in. (If you are interested in more details, you are welcome to write back to terras@vianet.on.ca .) Although not directly related to genealogy, it did seem to strike a chord with many, perhaps because of troubles accessing some of the genealogical sites. In general, we were warned to carefully stay away from too many fancy "bells and whistles" at our website at http://www.dentistnet.org/terras/ -- some suggested plain websites to accommodate everyone, while others suggested specific technical solutions. The following are some observations about the different types of browsers people are using, and how these different browsers can cause potential problems: - Some users have no problems visiting any webpage at all, because they have the latest browser (Netscape 4 or 5, Internet Explorer 4+). - Some have the latest browser, but have chosen to turn off the Java, the sound, even the graphics. Reasons for this included security concerns, distraction, or speed of downloading pages. Also, not everyone wants to see all those fancy gismoes and pages. - Others have an old browser where the graphics pages come in excruciatingly slowly, or where the browser crashes (especially because of some java-script). - Others cannot access certain pages, or else they see them in a completely different way than the web-designer intended. - Finally, others either have some other browser than either Netscape or IE, and a few don't even have Windows. These results are unpredicable unless the page is text-only. Food for thought! Meanwhile, thank you again! All your responses were much appreciated! Sorry to send this to the list but I have misplaced an e-mail address. I recently came across this information that would prove that William B. is a member of the Thomas and Mary Jane Johnston family and I thought you might be interested. William' Pension Papers show his name as Willam Cascodden/Carscadden They are primarily affidavits from his wife, Maranda Carscadden of the village of Orono, Township of Clarke, County of Durham, Ontario, Canada. She lists her husband as William B. Carscadden. An affidavit by Lucinda Gilfillan lists the name as Cascadan and Miranda's maiden name as Sipparo and states that William and Mirandy had a son names Benson Gifford Carscadden on Oct 4 1863 in the township of Clarke. Another affidavit is from William 's mother, Mary Robbins. She stated first that she was the mother of the said William B. Carscadden by her first husband Thomas Carscadden and then she mentions that she had another son by the name of George. It seems that no one heard from William for some time and figured that he must of died while in the army. This is why Miranda was trying to get his pension as a means of support. The war department records state that he was mustered out with a detachment of Co. at Chester, PA., June 21 1865. While in the army he had been in the hospital at a time or two. Since they had no record of any further disability, Miranda's claim was denied. Durham County Newspaper Index William of California Left Clarke 37 yrs before visited sister Mrs. James Gibson (Eliza Carscadden) 1902 Oct. 16-ON C48149 William Carscadden came back to Orono to visit brothers George and Jim who had since moved 1902 Oct. 16-ON C48148 "Mr. Wm. Carscadden of California, another old Clarke boy, is here on a visit to his sister's, Mrs. James Gibson, after an absence of 37 years. He came expecting to find his brothers George and Jim still residing here, not having heard from them since leaving here." After reading the above it seems that William abandoned his wife and family and took up a life in California not coming home until 1902 after his wife had passed away. As it turns out the William B. Carscadden who was actually in the Army was not Marandi's husband but another William B. Carscadden. So no one knows for sure what William was doing while he was suppose to be in the army. Apparently there is no record for him. Let me know what you think. Steph
