There is only one death in the Newspaper Index: Vincent Arthur McMAHON, drowned at Rice Lake whilst visiting his uncle, Charles McGuire - Aug 1, 1889 In the 1861 Map Tremaine Atlas I see the following: E. However, I do not think that this is the one which you are looking for, as this one died on Jul 9, 1922 at the age of 70 years. This would have made his date of birth about 1852. There is also a marriage as follows: Edwin ANNIS of Darlington, married Frances HOLDEN, d/o the late James Holden of Whitby, on Jun 15, 1882 There is a death of William ANNIS, of Darlington, father of Edwin, in Jun 1905 at the age of 92 years There are no Wills in the Surrogate Court Index, however, in the Durham County Marriage Registers, I see the following: John Waldron SCOTT, 25 of Listowell, born in Canada, s/o John and Mary, married Nov 4, 1862 to Jane ANNIS, 20 of Darlington, born Canada, d/o William and Elizabeth Do any of the above look familiar to you? 1. Re: RAY family of Whitby
    2. Kathy Witheridge
    3. I realize that Whitby is not in Durham county, but have been unable to find a mailing list for Ontario county. Has anyone come across the name RAY in the Whitby area? This family is no relation, but the family were good friends with my husband's aunt, who died 5 years ago at the age of 89 years. Therefore, a lot of antiques in our house originated from the RAY family. My earliest record is of William G. RAY and his wife Martha LUNDY. William was born in the US in 1792 and brought up a quaker. It is not known when this family moved to Canada, but they did appear in the 1861 census in Whitby Town. In the 1870's Charles RAY and his wife, the former Elizabeth McDERMID owned Whitby House Hotel and Livery Stables. Charles was a well known horseman and was a trainer of thoroughbreds. He had the distinction of winning the Grand National at Westchester, NY. Their son, Nathaniel RAY was quite famous in horseman. He started as a jockey and became a well known steeplechase rider and then turned to trotters, which he drove mainly on US tracks. Nat had a nasty fall at Roosevelt Raceway in the fall of 1952 and died at his summer home in Florida in March, 1953. I have many pictures of this family with their horses, should anyone have an interest. Kind regards Kathy Witheridge Sarnia, Ontario, Canada

    2. jak6241
    3. Greetings all, In my recent posting about Richard TRICK and Catherine ELLIOTT, I included information that should NOT have been there! I have reason to believe, and have 'assumed' so long that Charles TRICK and an 'Emlin' were Richard's parents, that at some point, I stuck the information from the FHC files into my personal file, date of birth (September 22, 1799) included. NEVER should do that kind of thing. Sooooo---in my posting, I naturally included that date. The PROBLEM is, obviously, I have no PROOF that these are his parents, hence am not certain that's his birthdate. If I were to go by his death record, his birth date would be abt. 1796--close, but not exact. I've deleted the date from my file so that that won't happen again, but wanted to alert you to the error in the post. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused! Thanks so much, Judy King

I took a look in "Out of the Mists" by Helen Schmid and found the following on page 145: Under the heading "Presbyterians" "To make it more accessible for those presbyterians in the more northern part of the township; occasional services were held in James Bigham's barn, Lot 24, Conc., 4. John Waddell, as well as a dozen other children, was baptised in this barn by Rev. Cassie on Sep 18, 1836." There is another piece regarding the Bigham family on page 79: Dr. John Bigham studied at Queen's University in Kingston, and after a short stay in Bluevale, Huron County, came to Orono in the 1860s and was made a coroner. It is interesting to read in a letter dated 1862, written to John Waddell at Bluevale from his uncle in Orono - "George Bigham was here last night and left a box for his brother, the doctor - about 25 lbs, containing bones, I think he said - shall I send it up right away or wait......." 1. Researching Virtues
    2. Leah Joys
    3. I am still researching my husband's mother's (Martha Virtue) side of the family; the Virtues originally came from Enniskillen, N. Ireland, but likely about 1840 emigrated to the Enniskillen area of Darlington Twp. She was a granddaughter of one of the eleven children of Robert Virtue and Philina Morrison, Archibald Virtue (1815 -1891) , who was married to Martha Hillier (1833-1886). I am interested in the other ten children but specifically Archibald's family . Their oldest daughter Elizabeth married John Stainton; the next Philina married Dr. Robert A. Lee ; William married Annie Thompson (and had Lillie, Violet, Charles, Russell, Edna, William, Great, and Grace); Edward m. Flora Smith; Robert (my mother-in-law's father) m. Elizabeth Strong of Bowmanville but that family was to move to the Orillia region and then on to southern Manitoba; John (Jack) 1866-1921 m. Laura Hamley and I believe there was an Albert L. The three daughters of Robert Virtue and Philina Morrison who present the greatest problem as to getting information about are Hannah who m. Charles Floody, Margaret who m. Charles Sherrett and Philina who married Charles Chambers. I have a little more on the other two daughters but not much on Anne Virtue who married Jacob Scott (both born in the 1820's), and Elizabeth who married Johnson (John) Niddery. Perhaps some of these names will ring a bell as far as somebody out there is concerned. I have the Waid pages and have obtained some of my information from them but I find there are various omissions, etc. and they have not been brought up to date. Leah Joys Medicine Hat, Alberta

    3. Hi Stuart... I don't see an immediate connection to the WEBSTERs I'm tracing, but perhaps Charles WEBSTER is a cousin somewhere along the way. I am tracing the ancestors (and descendants) of Thomas and Elizabeth WEBSTER from County Wexford, Ireland about 1817. I'm pretty sure that there were Websters left behind and some may have come over at a later date. There were 5-6 children as far as I can see. Richard born abt 1801 (there is some question as to whether he was Thomas' son or brother); Barbara born 1804 married Samuel John BEST and had 10 children; William born 1807 who married Mary DAVIDSON and had 12 children; Robert born 1811 married twice, 1st Amelia Anne DAVIDSON, 2nd Margaret HENDERSON and had about 11 children; Elizabeth born abt 1814 who does not seem to have married, and Abraham who married Maria HENDERSON and had 4 children. William and Robert moved to Mariposa Township and lived at Oakwood. None of their children are named Charles, but one has Charles as a middle name. Abraham had 3 daughters and one son who died young. His eldest was named Emaline, but she married Henry EWING and died 1895. The surname POGUE is connected, but through a great-granddaughter of the Barbara Webster listed above. Lorne POGUE married Jean GREIG (born 1904) and had 2 daughters: Shirley and Marie. One of them moved to New Zealand.
