    1. Reach Township: English and American Settlers

    3. I recently purchased a copy of Samuel Farmer's book, "On the Shores of Scugog". The following quote from this book regarding early settlement of the area is of interest to me: "A third group travelled east from Toronto to Oshawa, and then north. They settled the Whitbys, Reach and Scugog, and included English, Irish, Scotch and some Americans" (pg. 201)... and on page 203: "Still farther to the west, John Sykes, Chas. Mitchell, and George PORTEOUS were settled." I'm wondering if anyone has a specific date range that can be applied to this "third" group? I think that my gg-grandfather, George PORTEOUS, (b. 1818 in Elvington, Yorkshire) was part of this group. I also think that he may have met his future wife, Margaret STEWART (born 1823), in Reach. Margaret indicated that she was born in the US on at least 2 Ontario censuses. Any further details would be much appreciated. Thanks. --Doug Doug Porteous Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada

    1. Parker
    2. Rod Harrison
    3. Hi everyone! Does anyone out there have any connection to this family? Henry Parker came to Durham County, from Ireland, in the mid 1840's. Henry, his wife Eleanor (Harrison) and their seven children, Joseph, John, Robert, William, Henry, Ellen Jane and Elizabeth settled on lot nine in the fifth concession of Manvers township. Henry died about 1863 and left the land to two of his sons. His son Henry received the west half of the lot and appears to have lived there until 1887. Robert received the east half of the lot, but sold it to his older brother John. This land remained in John's name until 1891, at which time the deed was put in his wife's name, Elizabeth ( Lethangue). This land was passed down to their son David in 1905. He sold it a year later to Andrew Lethangue, whom I believe was a cousin of his mother's. >From the 1901 census it looks as though most of the family had left the township for parts unknown. I also know that Henry was married to Isabella Lethangue, John's wife's sister, and that Elizabeth married a James Byer. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who is related to this family in anyway. Thanks Rod Harrison

    1. William STRIKE Durham County
    2. Marilyn Ponting
    3. I am researching William STRIKE who was a tailor, and lived in Hope, Cavan and Manvers townships. He was born about 1828 in England, and was probably the William Strike age 15, an apprentice tailor, found in the 1841 cenus in Boyton, Cornwall. Whether he is connected to my STRIKEs I do not know. Mine originated in Linkinhorne, Cornwall, but like many Cornish spread to other parts of Devon and Cornwall, as well as the rest of the U.K., Australia, New Zealand and North America. By 1851 William was in Hope township with a wife and 1 child. I would like to find his marriage. I know from the birth registration of their youngest child that William's wife was Anna Maria Hagerman. I would also like to contact any descendents. The children of William and Annie were: Charles born about 1850, still at home in 1901 census Cecelia born about 1851, still at home in 1881 census Emily m. born about 1853, still at home in 1901 census William Sidney (sometimes Sidney William) born about 1855, may have married 1890 in Port Hope Anna or Annie Maria born about 1857, married Robert STAPLES 1878 in Bexley Elizabeth born about 1859, still at home in the 1901 census Alfred James Harvey born abt 1860, married Ella May ELFORD 1894 Darlington, died 1924 in Perth, was a baptist minister Ellen Maude born about 1863, married Edward S. McKENNY 1887 at Chaffey Lilian Margery born about 1865, married Joseph HUNTER 1892 Cavan Frederick H. born 13 Sep 1870 Manvers Twp, married 1891 at Hastings to Hattie E. Elphiett. This was the only STRIKE family living in Ontario at the time of the 1871 census. Can anyone help me find the marriage of William and Anna Maria about 1849-1850? TIA Marilyn Delta, British Columbia
