    3. My ggf George MONTGOMERY was b. 1844, Whitby, Ontario to Alex Montgomery and wife Isabella CUNNINGHAM. In my searches, I find several Whitbys mentioned. With only the above info to go on, am I right to be searching Whitby, Durham Co, Ontario? What about Whitby, Ontario Co, Ontario? Is this same place, different time? For some reason, my mind doesn't seem to want to wrap around this problem and I'm feeling frustrated by it. Where might I look for birth records for this birth? George was Wes. Meth. and so it would be strong possibility his family was also. Any suggestions appreciated. Marilyn in Michigan

    1. Porteous et al: Stratford, Port Perry, Owen Sound, etc.
    2. Doug Porteous
    3. I was able to solve the mystery that I wrote about in my earliest message that I originally posted at ONTARIO-L: "I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. My great-grandfather's youngest brother, Robert Sidney Porteous (born in Reach Township in 1862) was a long-time resident of Stratford, Ontario and was buried at the Avondale Cemetery in Stratford. He died in Owen Sound, Ontario on January 26, 1927 at the following address: 110 - 10th Street West. Are there any city directories or assessment roles for Owen Sound in 1927 that might tell me who was living at the above address at that time ......" I'm cc'ing ONDURHAM-L, CAN-ONT-PERTH-L and WELLINGTON-L since RS Porteous was born near Port Perry, lived in Stratford, Ontario for many years and was a resident of Kitchener, Ontario at the time of his death. The obits mention other people in Owen Sound, Kitchener, Epsom, Port Perry and elsewhere... 1. a Port Perry area native (one of the obits also mentions the name of a childhood friend from there) 2. long-time Stratford resident (and co-founder of the Porteous-McLagan Furniture Co.) 3. living in Kitchener, Ontario at the time of his death Robert Sidney Porteous collapsed in the doorway of a plumber's shop in Owen Sound, Ontario (now the Owen Sound Humane Society) and was taken to the address I mentioned, which was a building of doctors and dentists and only feet from where he had fallen. He died of a heart attack there while talking to the doctor (Dr. Gaviller). Apparently the weather on January 26, 1927 was extremely cold, and this may have aggravated his condition. RS had come up from Kitchener on the "noon train" and had checked into the Seldon House, now the Coach House, upon his arrival. He was walking back there from business with the North American Furniture Co. earlier in the day when he had his initial attack. My dad mentioned that he had met a bank manager from the area several decades ago. I've determined this was Harry Meredith Porteous, Robert Sidney Porteous' son. Harry died in Collingwood in 1976, and had been a manager of the CIBC in various towns for many years. Harry had been shot in a bank robbery in 1930; the bullet was never removed. I have obits for both RS and HM at my Web site: they make for interesting reading (at least from my perspective :) ) Cheers. --Doug http://members.home.com/dporteous/letters.html

    2. G Shaw
    3. I can provide you with information about Henry C. Tait. Arguably, some of the most important photos of people and places in late 19th century Bowmanville came from his camera. Tait operated a studio in town from 1869 until he relocated to Brooklin in 1871. After marrying there, he returned to Bowmanville in 1873 to resume his business as a photographer. The partnership he formed that year with James Arthur continued until 1877, when Arthur moved out of town. Tait carried on successfully alone until 1884 when he entered another partnership with David Morrison, Sr. In addition to offering studio portraits, the pair sold fancy goods, books, wallpaper, newspapers, clothing patterns, etc. Their partnership was dissolved in 1888. Tait's photo studio continued to thrive at its four corners location in the centre of Bowmanville. By 1898 he opened 'a branch' in Millbrook, and by 1900 he had opened another studio in Orono. Towards the end of 1903, he closed up his shop with a view to moving to Edmonton to be with family. His actual move out west happened in 1905. Henry Tait died in Edmonton during July 1929. >From: "Steph" <steph.eddy@sympatico.ca> >To: ONDURHAM-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Photo studio's >Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2000 09:56:45 -0400 >MIME-Version: 1.0 >Received: from [63.92.80.125] by hotmail.com (3.2) with ESMTP id >MHotMailBB29E762006FD82197A83F5C507D091D0; Mon Jul 03 07:00:02 2000 >Received: (from slist@localhost)by lists6.rootsweb.com (8.10.1/8.10.1) id >e63DxbP16740;Mon, 3 Jul 2000 06:59:37 -0700 >From ONDURHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com Mon Jul 03 07:02:54 2000 >Resent-Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2000 06:59:37 -0700 >X-Original-Sender: steph.eddy@sympatico.ca Mon Jul 3 06:59:36 2000 >Message-ID: <019901bfe4f6$8c8557e0$dddfacce@default> >Old-To: <ONTARIO-L@rootsweb.com>, <ONDURHAM-L@rootsweb.com> >X-Priority: 3 >X-MSMail-Priority: Normal >X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2314.1300 >X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2314.1300 >Resent-Message-ID: <deBaa.A._EE.IxJY5@lists6.rootsweb.com> >Resent-From: ONDURHAM-L@rootsweb.com >X-Mailing-List: <ONDURHAM-L@rootsweb.com> archive/latest/625 >X-Loop: ONDURHAM-L@rootsweb.com >Precedence: list >Resent-Sender: ONDURHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com > >Does anyone have any information on the following Studio's. > >Elsworth's located at King St., Newcastle, Durham County, Ont. > >H.C Tait, H.C.
