    3. Dear Listers, My paternal ggrandfather was John THOMAS born 1831 in Brock Twp, Port Perry, Ontario. His father was George THOMAS born in Wales and his mother was Christine HORTON born in Dublin. That is all I know of his parents. I have no information on siblings. John married Mary FRIEND She and her parents, Christine COWAN and Mr. FRIEND, were from Plymouth, England. I have found John and Mary in the Muskoka 1881 and 1891 census and later in Manitoba in 1901 to their deaths. Any further information on John or Mary's parents and siblings would be appreciated. 1. Report of Expert Panel finally read by John Manley
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Greetings All. Yesterday, Friday, I received a return telephone call from Paula Brennan, an Assistant to Industry Minister John Manley. She was able to confirm for me that Mr. Manley has at last viewed the Report of the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census. She stated that he was currently reviewing the Report but was unable to state when it would be made available to the Public. I also received a telephone call from Dr. Pamela White, Secretariat of the Expert Panel who also advised that Mr. Manley was currently reviewing the Report of the Expert Panel. Ms. White indicated that the Report would be posted on the Statistics Canada website as soon as it was made available by Mr. Manley. Just a reminder that the final hour of debate on Jason Kenney's Motion M-160 will take place on Wednesday 20 September, two days after Parliament re-convenes. For those who view House activities on CPAC the debate should take place about 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time. Motion M-160 states: "That, in the opinion of this House, the government should take all necessary steps to release the 1911 census records once they have been deposited in the National Archives in 2003." Motion M-160 has been deemed "votable" and, so far as I am aware it will be a "free" vote, i.e. Party leaders do not dictate how their members should (or must) vote. That vote should be recorded in Hansard and will give us an indication of how those MPs who have not bothered to respond to our letters and email might vote on a Bill to allow access to Historic Census. Once the recorded vote in Hansard is viewable on-line I will be very busy updating the MP Scoreboard on the Post 1901 Census Project website. Happy Hunting Gordon A. 1. Janetville and cemeteries.
    2. Al Webster
    3. Hi All, Many thanks to all who replied to my requests regarding (1) the location of the Janetville United Church cemetery and (2) info from Bowmanville cemeteries. I have confirmed that the UC and Presb. cemeteries at Janetville are both in the same place. Apparently they used to be separated by a fence, but that has long gone. And, although I had already looked through the cemetery (not very large at all) three times, only a return trip and a little help from one of you rewarded me with the stone I was looking for. I must say that it stands about 3' tall, is well lighted and is not hidden by bush, tree or anything else. Go figure!! Extracts from Bowmanville cemeteries can be purchased from the Whitby/Oshawa Gen Soc. They can also be found at the Bowmanville Museum and at the Clarke Museum and Archives in Orono. I have not yet visited these two museums, but will do so. For those interested in the Peterborough area, there is a fairly good collection of cemetery listings in the Peterborough Publis Library. Again, many thanks to all. Al.

    1. Environics Research Omnibus Survey re: Post 1901 Census
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Greetings All. At last. The long awaited Report of the Environics Research Omnibus Surveys on Public Attitudes relating to access to Post 1901 Census has been posted on the Statistics Canada website. It is an Adobe PDF file that downloads when you access the link. You require the Adobe Acrobat reader to view the document. It is 27 pages long and you will probably want to print it out for easy reading. Go to http://www.statcan.ca/english/census96/interm.htm and click on the link labelled "Report on Public Attitudes". This downloads the English language version. The document in French is accessed by first accessing the French side of the Statistics Canada website. We have not yet seen the Report of the Expert Panel. In speaking today with yet another Assistant to John Manley I sensed some uncertainty about what she was telling me. She thought that Mr. Manley was currently conducting meetings relating to the Report of the Expert Panel but could not say with any certainty that such was the case. She indicated that she would check and get back to me. Rest assured I will let everyone know as soon as I find out anything. In the meantime I would encourage everyone to continue with writing letters. Please let us know of any responses you get. I am off to read the Environics Research report. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. RE: PORTEOUS / HOWDEN / STEVENSON
    2. Doug Porteous
    3. Hi, Jim. Not sure if there's a connection with your PORTEOUSES. My Porteous ancestors started out in Reach Township (George Porteous, my gg-grandfather) in the early 1840s, and lived in Prince Albert/Port Perry, Epsom and the general area. My great-grandfather, also George Porteous, and his family lived in a variety of places in Ontario including Guelph, Stratford, Berlin, Perth and Almonte. His youngest brother, William Simpson Porteous, had a son by the name of Harry Meredith Porteous. The obit for Harry Meredith Porteous indicates that he left a son, Donald, in Galt, but that was in the early 1970s. My grandfather, Frederick Blake Porteous, migrated to Saskatchewan and later to British Columbia where I was born and where most of my relatives now live. However, Frederick's half-brother and sisters remained behind in Ontario and lived in Kitchener and area so perhaps there's a connection... You can check for more info at http://members.home.com/dporteous/letters.html, or e-mail me directly. Cheers. --Doug Doug Porteous Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada > -----Original Message----- > From: rain@infoserve.net [mailto:rain@infoserve.net] > Sent: August 27, 2000 5:42 PM > To: ONDURHAM-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: PORTEOUS / HOWDEN / STEVENSON > > > Would like to make contact with descendents of James (born ? > died ? married?) and Eliza Ellen (HOWDEN) (born circa 1851 > died after 1921) PORTEOUS - children?
