    3. If anybody succeeds in finding an index to Port Perry / Prince Albert newspapers, would somebody please look up PROUT for me? Or at least tell me if the Prince Albert PROUTs are related to those in Zephyr, Scott Township, and Georgina Township? Or those in Darlington Township? Thanks a million.

    1. Petitions for Historic Census Upgraded
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. >>>>>>> Forwarded for Gordon Watts <gordon_watts@telus.net> <<<<<< Greetings All With Canada's Federal election on 27 November 2000 a new Government comes into being. With the dissolution of the previous Government, all outstanding Bills and Motions in the House of Commons and the Senate, including those relating to Historic Census, ceased to exist. The same applies to petitions sent to the previous Government. Petitions from the Canada Census Committee containing signatures in excess of 6000 were presented to the House of Commons and something close to 3000 were sent to the Senate. These petitions, and those from other sources, served their purpose and helped us to reach the point where we were close to having a Government Bill brought down. Unfortunately, the election was called before this happened. Now, more than ever, your support in letters and petitions is required to inform the new Government that we are still here, and still seek public access to Historic Census records. We have a clean slate with the new Government. Those who signed petitions sent to the former Government are free once more to sign petitions to be sent to the new Government. Petitions downloadable from the Post 1901 Census Project website at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census have been upgraded to Adobe Acrobat PDF files. This should eliminate printing problems that were experienced with the Word and WordPerfect files previously located there. There are petitions to both the House of Commons and the Senate of Canada, in both French and English, for residents of Canada to sign. There is also a Non-Resident petition of support for those living outside of Canada, but having roots in Canada, to sign. The petition page has been totally revamped. I urge all to download and circulate both petitions, i.e. for the House of Commons and for the Senate. Even though they are worded similarly, because they are directed to different places, both petitions may be signed by the same people. If various Genealogical and Family History Societies prefer to use petitions of their own wording rather than use ours, I urge them to start circulating them now. There are no deadlines for petitions of the Canada Census Committee. They will be sent in periodically when sufficient signatures have been collected to make it worthwhile. Thank you all for your continuing interest and support. Gordon A. Does anyone know if the Port Perry newspapers (North Ontario Observer, Port Perry Star, etc.) have been indexed? Hi Doug, The library in Port Perry have computer printouts of an index for the paper... but it's a bit of a hit and miss project. I think the person who took on the project of Indexing never got it finished. The year we were looking for was there so it was not an issue for us.. Can't remember what years were missing.. sorry. 1. Re: Ayre
    2. Kathy, I went to highschool with Cindy Ayre of Bowmanville, daughter of Lloyd & (Arlene??) Ayre. She'd be 47 or 48 now. There was a younger daughter by about 2 or 3 years as well. If my memory serves me maybe an even younger son (John?). The family lived on a sheep farm. As I've lived away from the town for many years, I don't know what became of them, but my mother still lives in town and knows of the family and I'll ask her when I speak to her on the week end. 1. Re: Stacey
    2. I also went to school in Bowmanville. Mr. "Spud" Stacey had retired before I got there but he taught my older brother. Now that you put the name "Spud" with him, I can't remember his real name :-) I do remember he had a daughter Carolyn (I think) who would be about 53 or 54 years old now. ________________________________________________________________________ Get your own free email, set up a MyFamily site at http://www.MyFamily.com

    1. Attention Local History Buffs: Stewarts/Stuarts from the USA
    2. Doug Porteous
    3. Still trying to find out anything about my gg-grandmother, Margaret Porteous (nee Stewart or Stuart). She was born somewhere in the US circa 1823 (this according to a momument with her first name and that of her husband, George Porteous, at the Pine Grove Cemetery). The monument also indicates that she died in 1892. According to several Ontario censuses, she was of Irish descent. There is no death notice in the North Ontario Observer for late 1891, all of 1892 and early 1893. (actually, the December 22, 1892 issue is missing from the Ontario Archives microfilm - perhaps this is the issue that contained the death notice!). Apparently, a number of Americans migrated to Reach Township/Ontario County early on in its history. Perhaps her family left the area, and Margaret stayed behind to marry (or because she was married to) my gg-grandfather. The male children have "Porteous" names: William Simpsons and George, anyway, plus Mark, John and Robert Sidney), but perhaps the daughter's names are clues; they were: Amy Ann, Sarah Ann (died very young) and Silena Margaret. I got one helpful "nibble" as follows: "Hi Doug, I'm not an authority at all! But my Stewart's appear to have 'started' in New Jersey. They wound up in Ontario, went back to New York, some went back to Ontario, and the direct line I am searching left NY for Michigan in the 1840's." Thanks. --Doug
