Author: Sheila_Schmutz Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.oliver/4803.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks so much Mary, for posting the will of "the other" Dionysius Oliver, or another since there may be yet more. The final line in the will of the one who died about 1808-1809 states that he had a brother-in-law named Dionysius Oliver which fits wonderfully. I do not think they are father and son which may be implied if we refer to them as Sr. and Jr. They are likely of similar age. The one who died in 1815 had a sister Polly who married the one who died 1808-1809. D & Polly had sons Seaborn and Berrien. D and Ann Goode had a son Lewelling. I think this [posted by Sheila] will refers to Dionysius Oliver, Jr. Dionysius Oliver, Sr. died on 8 Sep 1808 at Petersburg, GA, Elbert County. This is across the Savannah River from where this Dionysius Oliver's will was probated. Here is the will of Dionysius Oliver, Sr., "Edgefield County, SC Wills 1787-1836" By James E. and Vivian Wooley p. 79 p. 280; 17 Sept 1809. "I Dionysius Oliver, of Edgefield Dist. SC. "I give unto my beloved wife Polly Oliver a negro man named Rubine & his wife Violt & negro woman named Nancey during her natural life & at her death said negroes to be equally divided between my I now live on during her life and widowhood, if she marry I desire that she leave the place for the use of the youngest son Beryan. I give to my wife a black mare named Betty with the riding chair & harness also one bed & furniture with one-fourth part of the other furniture and one-fourth part of my stock of cattle, hogs. I give unto Seaborn Oliver negroes viz. Simon, Sevcey & Rebecca. I give my son 200 acres, I have given my obligation with my son Seaborn for payment of $1585 in payment for two tracts of land I am to pay half & Seaborn the other half, my half to be paid from the property I leave to pay my just debts with I also give him two cows & calves & one bed of furniture & one-fourth of the other furniture. I give to my son Beryan Oliver negroes viz. John, Nan, Sucky with her son Henry & the tract of land whereon I now live containing 740 acres reserving the land I have left to my wife during her life time also the bay mare I rode with my saddle & briddle & bed & furniture & one-fourth part of the household furniture & four cows & calves, a fourth part of my hogs, my w atch & half of my books. The remainder of my property to be sold to pay my just debts. I appoint my wife Polly executrix & my brother-in-law Dionysius Oliver with my son Seaborn Oliver as executors. Wit. William Mountcaster, Douglas Huff, & D. Oliver Junr. Signed Dionysius Oliver. Proved by oath of Wm Mountcaster the 14 May 1810. 2. I think the father of Dionysius Oliver, Sr., was Capt. Thomas Oliver. He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Are you sure that the sister of Dionysius Oliver Sr. was named Mary Ann? If so, that is the family for whom I am interested. In my case, there has been no male Oliver since Thomas Oliver. I just want to find out if this family is the correct family. I am going on the fact that my gggrandfather had a brother named Oliver Hancock. My supposition is that John Hancock and Ann Oliver married in Petersburg, VA in the 1760s and soon afterwards moved to SC. They were in Edgefield District, SC before John Hancock and son John Hancock, son Oliver Hancock, and son James Hancock moved to Talbot County, GA in 1830s. Also, the widow of the elder John Hancock's brother Thomas went with them to Talbot County, GA. I had not been able to determine who this Ann Oliver is. If anyone has a clue, please let me know. 2. OLIVER SANDY
    3. Has any male named Oliver from the line of Dionysius been tested for YDNA? I believe that this line is also the line of Thomas Oliver born 1749 in Orangeburg Co, SC and Peter Oliver born 1752 in Orangeburg Coutny, SC who are MAYBE my Oliver line. Thomas Oliver had Peter in 1787 who had a Glenn McCartie Oliver. Peter Thomas Oliver, father of Dionysius Sr is said to have married Mary Anne McCarty (not McCarthy) who is supposedly from the line of Florance McCarty son of Dennis McCarty who is from the line of Donal McCartraugh, Earl of clan Carty or Justin McCartaugh, knight. Goode sewing clothes, but that is all.] Lewelling's education is mentioned a few times in the accounts, i.e. Richard M. Todd for schooling, Lewis Holloway for tuition and books, etc. An accounting of a sale made by Thos Coleman on 31 Jan 1817 for $1517 Money was paid out in Dec. 1819, including $100 "Cash to Lewelling" and $1 to a Mid Wife Money paid out through Nov. 1821 including "Boarding Lewelling Oliver 1820" for $80 and "articles for use of the plantation" $187 signed by David Richardson Money received for cotton sold in Charleston and Augusta in 1820 and 1821 The last entry is this collection is 1822. My interpretation follows: This Dionysius Oliver clearly had just the one son Lewellling who I believe was born about 1805 assuming these census records pertain to him: 1850 United States Federal Census > Alabama > Sumter > Warsaw Lewellen Oliver 45 M 8000 SC Eliza 42 F SC Ann 18 F AL Dunelia 14 M AL [actually Dionysius] Luellen 10 M AL Robert 6 M AL Dabney 3 M AL 1860 United States Federal Census > Alabama > Sumter > Northern Division 82 82 Lewellyn Oliver 54 M Farmer 43,000 140,000 SC Francis H Oliver 40 F SC Robt Oliver 16 M AL Lewellyn Oliver 18 M AL He mentions a sister Jane Ragsdale, a brother John, a brother Peter who had a son Dionysius, and then there is mention of a nephew Berrien, son of Dionysius Oliver! The only way I can make that work is that he had another sister who married a cousin named Dionysius Oliver. I found a marriage record for such a marriage: Marriages of Granville County, North Carolina, 1753-1868 Oliver, Dyonisisu & Polley Oliver, 26 Jan 1790; Joseph Smith bm; A. Henderson wit. Whether this is them.......I don't know. If so then this is likely the son's marriage: Marriages of Granville County, North Carolina, 1753-1868 Oliver, Berrien & Mary B. Royster, 12 Nov 1821; Willis A. Royster, bm. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Oliver. I do, however, have a son Wiliam for John's father, James. That William was b. 20 Dec 1781 in SC and died in AR. So, I'm pretty sure that this is not your William Oliver. Good luck, though, in your search. Phyllis Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It tells me that James' son John was not the father of my great-grandfather, William. Most of what I know about William is on the 1850 census, which is where I learned he was born in SC. I did know they came here from Kentucky. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
