Author: jakesjag Surnames: Oliver Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.oliver/4842.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you so much for sharing this. I have a Sampson Oliver born in 1850 in Wabash Co IN. I can find nothing about him after the 1860 census. His parents were Benjamin and Sebthany Westlake Oliver from Dayton Ohio but settled in Wabash county IN. Benjamin was son of James Bracy Oliver and Mary Hardman. Some records have James coming from VA. Benjamin had another son Thomas. The way this family repeats names it just makes me wonder if this is an uncle. I am going to save the information just in case I ever find a connection. I am still working on James Bracy Olivers parents and where he was from. Author: jkwilsonfl Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.oliver/1348.1511.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In the "Sketches of the Olivers" by Col. Hugh Oliver and his wife, Margaret searched the Olivers of Cades Cove as Col. Oliver was born and raised in Cades Cove, Tenn. He compiled the information on his search for his ancestors and included information he collected that did not pertain to his lineage. I am an Oliver born but have no connection to Tenn. My line is in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida where they settled in Starke, Bradford County, Florida. I have the book and found it very useful in tracing my line. You can find more information on the book at Google.com Hope this helps. Ellen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I haven't found evidence of Martin Oliver having a son by the name of William. I do find census records showing William as the father of Allen Fletcher Oliver. Allen married twice. His first wife was a Mary C who died, I think, about 1870/1871. He married Phebe J Haskins 5 May 1872 Fulton County, Kentucky. Allen did have a baby/toddler at the this time. I doubt you'll ever see this reply, but I'll reply anyway. I'm an Oliver of Chattanooga. My dad was an Oliver of Chattanooga. His dad (I never met) name was Fred Robert Oliver, and his dad's name was John. Not sure the detail on that. My dad has some family geneology info. Fred grew up in the South Pittsburgh / Whiteside area, and moved to Chattanooga later. Side note: In Cade's Cove in the GSMNP, there is a John Oliver cabin. Always wondered if there was some relationship there. Of course all of your questions are probably already answered. For what it's worth. I did do a lot of work so I do have a lot of information but the trail goes cold when it reaches the Ireland side of things. I will dig out my Oliver tree. How are you related to them? I look forward to hearing from you. If you want to email me direct send a mesasge to [email protected] as my ancestry access is limited now that I don't subscribe. Speak soon! The list of what you feel are mistranscriptions of the surname Oliver, rang lots of bells for me and my research. I am hunting down my ancestors with my family name of Gulliver, who lived in Cumberland during the 1800's. All of the surnames that you have listed have appeared in my research. In the 1841 census I have assumed that my ancestor appears as Simon Golifer living in Llangrigg and born in Ireland. Is this your ancestor? Are we related somehow? Or have I gone off track completely? I hope that you are still tracking the messages boards but after 3 years perhaps you aren't.
