Hi, I am trying to prove that I am related to Dioysius Oliver's sister Ann or Mary Ann. Check Edgefield SC genweb. I have found a lot of info there. He founded Petersburg, GA in Elbert County, GA by selling the Bounty land from the state of GA that he recieved after the Revolutionary War. Information is very confusing as there several different Dioysious Olivers, Peter Oliver and Berrien Oliver. I think his wife was Polly. She could have been his son or nephew's wife. His father was Thomas Oliver of Petersburg, VA. His brothers and sisters were: Eleanor Oliver Mary Ann Oliver Thompson Hancock? John Oliver Peter Oliver Martha Oliver Jane Oliver Ragsdale McCarty Oliver James Oliver Francis Oliver William Oliver His children were Martha Oliver Hancock Seaborn Oliver “Davidson Baptist Church Cemetery, Tallapoosa County, AL_ Seborn Oliver b. 1848 d. 1900 (This is probably his son/grandson as he died about 1827.) William Oliver whose family ended up in Tallassee, AL. “www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/al/alfiles.htm” Dorothy Burandt burandt2002@yahoo.com “Chief efau Hadjo, Mad Dog,of the Wind Tribe became Chief of the Creek Indian Nation in 1793 when he succeded Alexander McGillivray. The Creek Nation at that time consisted of the Wind Tribe who were the most elite, the Upper Creeks and the Lower Creeks. He lived in Tuckabatchee which is near present day Tallassee. He signed Treatys as early as 1765 and as late as 1802. In 1929, the Alabama Antropological Society placed a monument marking the Creek Indian Nation at the great Council Tree in Tuckabatchee where the Wind Tribe resided. The monument mentions Chief Efau hadjo. The monument has been moved to present day Tallassee. There is nothing now to mark Tuchabatchee. Big Woman was the daughter of Chief Mad Dog. She was married first to Tom Low and had a daughter, Anny Low. She then married Alexander Cornell and had 3 children, Suckey, Charles, Hawkins. Big Woman was a full blooded Creek and I believe Alexander Cornell to be white. Alexander Cornell was the interpreter to Benjamin Hawkins, the Indian Agent as early as 1784. Anny Low first married George Goodwin, then Polly Miles. One daughter was born, Mary Lou Miles, on July 24, 1824 at Pidgeon Creek, AL. Mary Lou Miles maried James Cornell Oliver in 1837, son of William Oliver and Mary Kean. William Oliver is the 6th son of Revolutioary War Hero Dionysius Oliver. Mary Kean is the daughter of John Kean and Lucy Cornell Kean. There were 4 children: William James Oliver born 1839 Catherine Oliver, born August 5, 1844, who married Richard Burgess, son of William Burgess of Pike County (AL?) Frances Nancy Oliver, born 1845 Malinda Hawkins Oliver, born 1850 Upon the death of Oliver, Mary Lou Oliver married Richard Wingard on July 14, 1853, son of William and Ellender Wingard of Pike County (AL?). She had 3 more children with Richard Wingard: Nora Wingard who married William Curry George Franklin Wingard, born July 27, 1860, who married Lena Curry on 3 January, 1883 and had 3 children. He then married Carry Lou Moore on July 15, 1981 (1881?) and had 10 children. He was still alive in 1946. James Wingard, died as a boy. Richard Wingard died on July 27, 1862 and is buried in the Wingard Cemetery in Wingard, AL. Mary Lou Miles Wingard came to be known as “Grandma Wingard” . She had 7 children, 24 grandchildren from her Oliver children and 13 grandchildren from her Wingard children. There were great and great grandchildren also. She died on June 17, 1911” “John J. Hoell William Forest Dionysius Oliver Will Proved by the Oath of William Forest this 2nd Day of October 1815 and same time qualified Thomas Coleman, David Richards and Drury Hern Dec? to this written Jn Tinkiny OED Recorded 20th May 1816 Book B Page 355-356 There are also many ESTATE PAPERS. An inventory was filed 24 Oct. 1815 by Thos Coleman, Drury Hern, David Richards -This included corn, rye, cotton, 7 cows, 50 hogs, 1 yoke of oxen, 36 sheep, 26 cattle, 7 horses of various colors -This also included several Negroes: man named Jack, woman named Fillis, Washington, girl name L???, girl named Emily, boy named Lewwey, woman named Judah, boy named Boston, girl named Rachel, boy named Prince, boy named Sam, girl named Caroline, woman named Lucy, girl named Zena, girl named Harriet, girl named Eliza, boy named Joe, woman named Crecy, woman named Seanty, woman named Mary -Total value $7353.50 Property sold belonging to the estate of Dionysius Oliver Decd December 30, 1815 -this sale included mostly small household items such as a looking glass, tallow candle molds, sheets, etc. for a total of $1751.99 -Three Negroes Jack, Phyllis & Whashington were purchased by William Parten -One Negro girl Lucrey was purchased by Leo Parten -One Negro girl Emily was purchased by William Coursey Money was paid out for sewing of clothes by Mrs. Burt [note other times she is called Widow Burt or Mrs. Jeaneen Burt] and Mrs. P. Goode and the purchase of two pairs of shoes for Lewelling. At another time a knife, a mare, shoeing of his horse, suspenders, buttons, a hat, a pair of boots, etc. Although Board is often paid for him, it never indicates to who. [Note some postings suggest he was raised by his late mother's sister named Talitha Goode. There is one mention of a Talitha Watskins paid $15.75 from the estate on June 5, 1820 and the one mention of Mrs. P? Goode sewing clothes, but that is all.] Lewelling's education is mentioned a few times in the accounts, i.e. Richard M. Todd for schooling, Lewis Holloway for tuition and books, etc. An accounting of a sale made by Thos Coleman on 31 Jan 1817 for $1517 Money was paid out in Dec. 1819, including $100 "Cash to Lewelling" and $1 to a Mid Wife Money paid out through Nov. 1821 including "Boarding Lewelling Oliver 1820" for $80 and "articles for use of the plantation" $187 signed by David Richardson Money received for cotton sold in Charleston and Augusta in 1820 and 1821 The last entry is this collection is 1822. My interpretation follows: This Dionysius Oliver clearly had just the one son Lewellling who I believe was born about 1805 assuming these census records pertain to him: 1850 United States Federal Census > Alabama > Sumter > Warsaw Lewellen Oliver 45 M 8000 SC Eliza 42 F SC Ann 18 F AL Dunelia 14 M AL [actually Dionysius] Luellen 10 M AL Robert 6 M AL Dabney 3 M AL 1860 United States Federal Census > Alabama > Sumter > Northern Division 82 82 Lewellyn Oliver 54 M Farmer 43,000 140,000 SC Francis H Oliver 40 F SC Robt Oliver 16 M AL Lewellyn Oliver 18 M AL He mentions a sister Jane Ragsdale, a brother John, a brother Peter who had a son Dionysius, and then there is mention of a nephew Berrien, son of Dionysius Oliver! The only way I can make that work is that he had another sister who married a cousin named Dionysius Oliver. I found a marriage record for such a marriage: Marriages of Granville County, North Carolina, 1753-1868 Oliver, Dyonisisu & Polley Oliver, 26 Jan 1790; Joseph Smith bm; A. Henderson wit. Whether this is them.......I don't know. If so then this is likely the son's marriage: Marriages of Granville County, North Carolina, 1753-1868 Oliver, Berrien & Mary B. Royster, 12 Nov 1821; Willis A. Royster, bm. Mary

In pursuit of them I have also made contact with a lady in York through the Cleveland Family History Society. Her ancestry goes back to a William Oliver b 1767 Brompton who may also have been related to Michael but as yet unproven until we find the elusive parents. We think William married Mary Clarke and the family stayed in the Northallerton / Thrintoft area. Will keep in touch. All a bit "hit & Miss" but not too hard if you are looking at Transcripts but hard work if you are looking at microfiches!!! We tended to work south from Northallerton (hence Whixley where the first child of Thomas and Esther (Jackman) was born). It would be nice to work out a more reliable or certain way of tracing Thomas's and your Michael's ancestors. There is a batch of OLIVERS at Leathley/Lindley near Pool in Wharfedale but we have not been able to connect "our" Thomas Oliver with them although Thomas was a corn miller as were the families at Leathley We will let you know if we come up with anything, regards Cynthia & John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Northallerton is not far from the Durham border, there are many OLIVERs in County Durham. Northallerton is covered by the Cleveland Family History Society. Grace's siblings were: Herbert R., Sarah, Frances B., Ada L., and Edward H. I think she died 23 May 1964. She never married and was living in Norwalk, CT when she died. As with you I have as yet not traced Michael's parents or siblings so there remains the possibility that Michael and Thomas were either brothers or cousins although the locations would seem to make that a long shot. Michael had 3 sons Luke, George and Thomas. Luke my ggg g'father moved up to Teesside so it is possible if your Thomas is related that he moved South as the family dispersed. My father was Thomas Oliver and I have traced Thomas Olivers in every generation of the family which is what drew my attention to your original posting. I need another visit to the Northallerton Records Office to trace Michael's family and will let you know if I find another Thomas on my line Ken Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
