    2. Evon, On the purchase of the book, "Sketches of the Olivers" by Col. Hugh Oliver and his wife, Margaret, you can contact Margaret at _MTOLIVER77@AOL.COM_ (mailto:MTOLIVER77@AOL.COM) . Her address is 914 Crestwyck Lane, Greenville, SC 29615. It is a very interesting book which includes census, deeds, etc. of Olivers in S. C., Georgia, Alabama, etc. Mrs. Oliver has printed a 3rd edition in 2006 due to many requests. The first edition was printed in 1987, second edition 1996. It is a hard back cover and believe it has about 500 pages. To me, it was worth the money and very informative. Ellen Oliver Wilson In a message dated 9/17/2009 6:50:45 P.M. I just printed the info for reading. I have traced my Olivers from Edgefield Co., S. C, through Georgia before finally settling in Starke, Florida. I bought a copy of the book, "Sketches of the Olivers" by Col. Hugh Oliver and his wife Margaret. I use the book very often as a reference book. Col. Oliver was tracing his family roots at Cades Cove, Tenn. and accumulated a lot of Oliver information. Instead of throwing away the information that did not pertain to his line, he included it in his book. Just thought you would like to know. I hope the information helps give you a better understanding of this condition. As for my Olivers...my father (d. June 2004) and I have managed to trace our Olivers only as far back as Charleston, SC during the RW where Samuel Oliver, RS, was captured and died in prison during the RW. This line comes into GA through Abbeville, SC. In GA, our line shows up in the following counties: Hall, DeKalb, Campbell, Muscogee, and Fulton. Daddy also bought Col. Oliver's book some years ago and I have since inherited it; although I haven't referred to it in some time. I don't really remember that there was much, if anything, in there that pertained to our particular line. I haven't really been doing much serious research as of late, but if I find anything that may appear connected to your line, I'll let you know. 3. Mine was "rumored' to be from Carne VA. Only Carne I can find is a creek. He moved to Pike County MO abt 1830ish and was "killed by a shotgun blast" on 29 June 1858. His wife was going to divorce him. He was a drunk and a gambler. His parents were born (and him too) in VA according to census records. I wish he had a more uncommon name then I could have poss. found him. He did name some of his kids really interesting names such as General Jackson Oliver, George Washington Oliver etc. My mom was the Oliver, born in Missouri and raised there. Author: jkwilsonfl Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.oliver/4859.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Phyllis, I am an Oliver born. Just wanted to comment on the described condition you mentioned. My great grandmother, Mary Alice Crosby had this condition also but the irony of this is she married an Oliver, George Samuel Oliver. This condition affected her left hand which drew down her ring and pinkie finger. No one knew what caused her condition or when it occurred. The family believed she had a stroke in that hand and when she was asked, she would claim she hurt her hand as a young child. I was a small child when I met my great grandmother and always wondered about her hand. The fingers never moved and always stayed curled up in the palm of her hand. She would have to forcibly stretch them out to trim her nails. I am surprised that someone else has experienced this condition and am happy to finally know what it is called. Thanks for sharing your information. Ellen Oliver Wilson JKWILSONFL@AOL.COM Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Not sure how the French would tie into the British Isles, but I know that at some point, the Scandinavians (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) invaded the British Isles and intermarried with people there. While I cannot trace my Olivers back into those areas yet, I am pretty sure that my family was at least from somewhere in the British Isles (probably England somewhere). Also, there is a condition of the hand known as Dupuytren's Contracture which was once known as Viking's Disease. It involves the formation of nodules under the skin in the palm of the hand. These nodules can progress to the point that it will draw down the fingers (usually the ring finger and the "pinkie") toward the palm and may require surgery to correct. My father had this condition some years ago and now I appear to be developing it as well. While the evidence is not certain proof, it does suggest that there may be something to this Viking connection theory and possibly the Oliver line. I would be interested in hearing if there are other Olivers with this hand condition and where their family origins lie. My understanding is the link to Clan Fraser is based on the fact there was a Clan seat at Castle Oliver, but no Olivers have ever lived in the castle nor was it built by Olivers rather built by an Oliver Fraser and is named for his first name not last. My understanding of the Oliphant link is that Olifar is a root name for Oliphant (Olifar = Oliver) which makes way more sense. But according to the Council of Scottish Chiefs Oliver is a sept of Fraser. Now this much I do know. After the Clan systems were abolished by the English technically all Clans were disbanded. When they were reestablished the Olivers were placed under Fraser because of the Oliver Castle. Also I fairly certian that the Olivers migrated to the highlands from the Borders area. Frasers are Highlanders and Olipahnts are Border area Scots. As I sated above any and all knowledge on this matter will be greatly appreciated. You may feel free to contact me directly. 3. Hi, The hand condition is described in the series of novels by Diana Gibaldon in the last one -A Breath of Snow and Ashes. It is a series that invokes time travel but also about Scots immigrating to the U.S. before the revolution. You may enjoy it. I certainly did! There is one Mr. Oliphant who matches the Oliver men who were DNA tested in the group shaded bright yellow, at at least 35 of 27 markers. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gaoliver/OliverLines.html When I last checked, he matched no other Oliphant though. There is another Oliphant DNA group that matches men in the bright orange shaded Oliver DNA group. Not that the set of Gibaldon novels is completely historically accurate, but as I understand it men of many last names could fight under the banner of a good leader in one clan, or be in his group through marriage. 3. Remember if you are talking about Scotland there was the "Auld Alliance" between Scotland and France against the English. There are quite a few Olivers in the north of England. That's is why you see so many men during that era named for him. He led American forces through swamps in SC to sneak up on the Brits.
