A recent query concerns some Oldhams who were living in Texas in the 1880s. For those who do NOT know about the 1880 census, let me make this suggestion: Suggestion: The 1880 census (US) has been transcribed and published on multiple CD-ROMs by the Latter Day Saints. I am almost certain that all the LDS family history centers must have a copy of these CD-Roms. Be aware that this is a TRANSCRIBED census record and thus is full of errors--but still useful. And be aware that the original census-taker MAY not have spelled the name as you think it should be spelled. If the volunteer at the FHC is familiar with all the peculiarities of this transcribed census, you may use a wild card--but don't ask me!!! I did these censuses for my people--mostly living in three counties by that time--the old fashioned way--by reading microfilm. If at first you do NOT find your Oldham spelled the way you think it should be spelled, try some variants in the search function of the CD-ROMs. Example: I was looking for my great-grandmother's German stepfather. All his legal documents spell the name Henze. How is it spelled in the 1880 CD-ROMs? Hensi. Also, scour the LDS (Salt Lake City) catalog--called the FHLC (Fam Hist Library Catalog) on the internet www.familysearch.org The catalog is on the lower right, and adjacent to that link is a list of over 3,700 worldwide family history centers. I suspect all the US centers have computers and the 1880 census on CD-ROMs. If not, I believe you can still order for about $50 all the CD-Roms of the 1880 census. You may be related to the neighbors of your Oldhams. Happy hunting! E.W.Wallace a descendant of Jesse Oldham of Orange Co., NC, Caswell Co. NC & Madison Co., KY (formerly of Virginia)
Is there anyone out there related to or working the line of W.M. STRICKER who married LAURA OLDHAM on Sept. 10, 1900 in Waco, McLennan Co., TX? I believe his name was WALTER M. LAURA OLDHAM was b. May 19, 1884, d. May 30, 1910 in Waco, TX. She was the daughter of BELLZORA (various spellings) SELLERS, b. Aug. 28, 1866 to DR. JOHN WARD SELLERS & LYNIA JANE GODWIN in CORYELL CO., TX. I can clear up a few of the Oldham's on the cemetery list: F. M. Oldhamm is Francis Marion Oldham son of Hiram Oldham and Sarah Todd. Dollie C. was the 2nd wife of Hiram Oldham. He married her after Sarah Todd Oldham died. Hiram Oldham (1800-1867) was believed to be the son of George Oldham and his wife was Sarah Todd. Margaret W. wife of Wm. Oldham was the daughter of Hiram Oldham and Sarah Todd and daughter in law to Elias and Polly Sisk Oldham. Elias Oldham (1803-1856) was the husband of Polly Sisk and son of James D. Oldham. Samuel C. Oldham was the son of Hiram Oldham and Sarah Todd. Reuben T. Oldham (1805-1855) was also the son of James D. Oldham. Hello - I agree with the writer that stated "All queries need three vital pieces of info: Name (of course), Date, and Place." EXCEPT we often don't have that information. When I began my research I had pages of newspaper clippings that we did not know where they were published or the date. It worked for me to put messages on bulletin boards. I'm a relative newcomer to this website. I am unable to help anyone who has posted lately because queries are missing some vital information. In one case, a 1759 will was cited but no place of recordation was given. At least, give us the state. In another case, no dates were given. All queries need three vital pieces of info: Name (of course), Date, and Place. Come on, folks, Oldhams have been in this country for a LONG time, and this is a rather common surname in parts of England. E.W.Wallace

Persons looking for Oldhams in UK should probably use the Family History Library Catalog to determine whether Salt Lake City has the 1881 census (and other censuses) for the UK. www.familysearch.org A whole floor in the FH Library at Salt Lake City is devoted to British films, maps, microfiche, and BOOKS and all kinds of finding aids. Also this is an excellent website for links to genealogy groups all over UK and I believe Ireland. http://www.genuki.org.uk/ Happy hunting!

Surnames: OLDHAM, APPLEGATE, HUMPHREYS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Vm3.2ACEB/462.1 Message Board Post: Found his will in Coahoma Co. MS. In it he names daughters Henrietta and Elizabeth Jane, a son William Oldham (one yoke of oxen), and an unnamed relationship with Louise Humphreys, wife of John Humphreys (one yoke of oxen). He left to each of his own other unnamed children $20, and his wife Mary Oldham (whom he married in 1843) was to receive his land as long as Henrietta & Elizabeth Jane lived with her and until they married. At Mary's death, the 2 dau were to inherit his estate. Therefore, from Will & census records, we now know that Mary's son Jesse Applegate was married to Henrietta Oldham, and Mary was widow for 2nd time by Henrietta's father.
Please tell me the following: 1. Where was George Oldham--when you last saw/researched him? 2. Who is Celia? 3. What are the DATES for George Oldham? Is he the one who filed for Rev War pension in 1833 in Anderson Dist SC - aged about 83? If he is the latter person, I may be able to give you some tiny bit of info about his activities in Caswell Co., NC. I know nothing about Anderson Dist, SC. Other than Caswell Co. NC records, you are on your own. So many Oldhams and so few early records which link one Oldham to another!!! E.W.Wallace
