Oldham, *** To add a little bit to that info: THE KENTUCKY ENCYCLOPEDIA - John E. Kleber, Editor in Chief. Published by the University Press of Kentucky copyright of second printing 1992 Page 694 tells us: "William Oldham, soldier in the American Revolution, was born in Berkeley County, Virginia, on June 17, 1753, to John and Ann (Conway) Oldham. He fought in the early part of the Revolutionary War, rose to the rank of captain in 1775, and resigned in 1779. At that time he emigrated to the Falls of the Ohio, probably with his wife, Penelope (Pope) Oldham. He took part in some of the engagements against the Indians in the Northwest Territory and was in command of a regiment of the Kentucky militia in the ill-fated and poorly conducted expedition led by Gen. Arthur St. Clair, governor of the territory northwest of the Ohio River. On November 4, 1791, troops were attacked by Indians near the Wabash River and the border between Ohio and Indiana. William Oldham was killed, one of the hundreds killed or wounded. Two years later Capt. Alexander Gibson's men built Fort Recovery at the site of the battle. In 1823 Oldham was honored by the Kentucky legislature in naming a newly formed county for him." Do any of you know who Penelope and William's children were? My ancestor is a William Oldham but unfortunately not this one. Mine married a Mary Norris and came from Maryland. His children settled around Lexington, KY. There is record of William being in Indiana and Lexington. One of his daughters married William Montgomery. If this rings bells for any of you, I've put my info out at Rootsweb: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~brooks/OLDHAMS/OldhamDesc.htm Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. I am interested in finding out the names of approximately 15 of my ancesters that are buried in a private cemetery located off of highway 878 near Mistaken Creek in Grayson County Kentucky. I only have names for a couple individuals buried there; Daniel Oldham, John Oldham, Sibby Oldham. This cemetery is very near the Greene cemetery, also off of highway 878, between McGrady Creek Rd and Mistaken Creek bridge. The Oldham cemetery only has field stones as markers and according to an old article that I found, it has not been used since 1858. If anyone has information about this cemetery, or recommendations on possible sources to research, I would greatly appreciate your assistance. Thanks,

Dear Sheila and other Oldham researchers, particularly of VA, NC and KY On 12/2/02 you wrote to the Oldham List, addressed your salutation to Linda, and giving some names of Jesse Oldham, Jr. and Maria Duncan, presumably of Madison Co., KY (or surrounding areas). I have not researched this younger family sufficiently to make any amendments to the list of children you provided. However, I do wish to make this correction: Richard Ready-Money Oldham is the son of Jesse Oldham, Sr. (not Jesse, Jr.) and his wife Elizabeth Simpson. He is my ancestor. His Rev War pension indicates he was born 4 May 1763, probably in North Carolina [however not stated]. He died ca 17 June 1836. He was married first to Ursley Duke Williams [the widow of Reuben Peoples] of Caswell Co., NC. After Ursley's death, he married Patsy Reid, daughter of Alexander Reid. He filed for a Rev War pension, got at least one payment, and Patsy got a widow's pension. Later, Patsy and most of her children (as far as I know) moved to Missouri, she to Platte Co., MO. This is according to the Rev War pension. R/M also got a bounty-land warrant, but I do not have any information except the number of that warrant, which appears on the cover sheet of the pension. If your favorite genealogical library has some hefty books by Virgil D. White called [loosely] Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionar War Pensions, take a look at the Oldhams. There will be an abstract of R/M's pension. Question: Did Jesse Oldham, Jr. remain in Madison Co., KY? If so, I will try to be on the lookout for him. I have enough trouble keeping up with R/M's first children, only one of whom was a son. For example, R/M's daughter Nancy Oldham m. in 1810 or so to Overton Harris, son of the elder Christopher Harris. Overton wrote his will in 1827, restricting Nancy's use of the property in the event that she remarried after his death. About ten years later, in 1837 or so, Nancy decided to remarry to Anderson Chenault, now a widower, and she had a pre-nuptial agreement drawn up, which was not recorded until she and Anderson had been married for a year. It is recorded in Madison Co. deed book, and should be of interest to all feminists (and legal students). Subsequent deeds in which Nancy Chenault is a party are carefully worded. Thanks for your interest in the Oldhams of Madison Co., KY and previously of Caswell Co., NC and probably previously of Northern Neck Virginia--where there are tons of Oldhams, few of them who can be linked to one another. E.W.Wallace (female)

Submitted by E.W.Wallace Here is some information about a George Oldham, and all indications he is the same George Oldham, previously of Caswell Co., NC. Some records of Montgomery Co., TN indicate that the same George Oldham may have been a resident of that county in the time period 1800. >From Will Book A, page 119 Indenture of William Murphy to George Oldham Indenture made this 30th day of July 1800, between Morgan Brown, Chairman of the County of Montgomery and George Oldham, in which William Murphy, orphan of Patrick Murphy, deceased, is bound to George Oldham as apprentice until he shall attain the ag of twenty-one years. He will faithfull serve his Master, and in return he will learn the trade of a Farmer. Oldham agrees to have him taught reading, writing and arithmetic, to provide for him until the expiration of his apprenticeship is ended. Morgan Brown George Oldham (Laura Willis, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TENNESSEE WILLS & ADMINISTRATIONS VOLUME ONE (1796-1804) [Melber, KY: Simmons Historical Publications, 1994], p. 46) Another entry from the same Will Book links George Oldham to Caswell Co., seeming to confirm he was of the larger Oldham family of that North Carolina county: Will Book A, page 125 Power of attorney from William Holderness to George Oldham I, William Holderness of Caswell County, North Carolina, do appoint my friend, George Oldham of Davidson County, as my lawfull attorney, to ask for and receive all sums of money or any other property that may be due me, and to sell and dispose of all such of tracts of land that I may be entitled to, this 17th day of September 1792. Test: John Williams William H. Rice William Holderness (Ibid., p. 48) There is another entry for Moses Oldham, Sr. in the same county. George may be the same person who resided in Caswell Co. for many years. As late as 29 Jan 1816, he was a purchaser at the estate sale of Elizabeth Williams, deceased. (WB G-180). Elizabeth was the widow of Henry Williams, whose daughter Ursley Duke Williams (widow of Reuben Peoples) married George's brother Richard "Ready Money" Oldham of Caswell Co., later of Madison Co., KY. George Oldham of NC line received a pension No. S21906. According to abstract, he enlisted in Caswell Co., NC. He applied 4 Mar 1833, Anderson District SC. He was aged about 83 and soldier died there (date not given). In 1852 surviving children were Thomas & William Oldham and Mary wife of Nelson Guttry, all of Anderson Dist SC. The son Thos. Oldham made affidavit in Feb 1857. ........ + Another George Oldham also applied for a Rev War pension, but he filed in Henrico Co., VA court 29 Jul 1840, and apparently his widow filed for a pension in Hancock Co., TN 21 Apr 1857. This George Oldham's application number is No. 1249 [source of number is unknown; it may not be the pension no.] He died 1789/90, and his widow Jane was living in Hancock Co., TN in 1857. (Margie G. Borwn, GENEALOGICAL ABSTRACTS AREVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERANS SCRIP ACT 1852 Abstracted from the Bureau of Land management Record Group 49, National Archives and Records Administration [Lovettsville, VA: Willow Bend Books, 1997], p. 302)

Dear Oldham researchers, This snippet appears on the current Oldham rootsweb page. Question: Is the Bible mis-transcribed, or is the following transcript of Edmond Basye II's (or later) will mis-transcribed? Elizabeth Basye, according to the will, was married to Richard Oldham, not William Oldham. Did Elizabeth have a subsequent husband? Furthermore, there is no record of a Conway Oldham being a member of this family. Where have I gone wrong? Back to the Caswell Co. books and tax lists!!! Conway and Leroy Oldham are believed to be in the group that came to Kentucky directly from Northern Neck Virginia and did not detour through Caswell Co., NC. Submitted by E.W.Wallace descendant of Jesse Oldham and his wife Elizabeth Simpson of Caswell Co., NC Walt" <[email protected]> According to information from the family Bible Of Capt. John Oldham of Caswell County N.C. Born Nov 10 1757. His parents were William Oldham and Elizibeth Basey. His Siblings were: Jessie, Moses, James, Judith, Major George, Conway, Richard, William, Elizabeth. I have a copy of the page from Cpt. John's pension file which his family applied for after his death Nov 17, 1831. His wife (Annis Rice) and his sons made the application. Walt Here are some of my notes on Edmond Basye, whom I have labeled II as there was at least one older Edmond Basye. I have not studied this family intensely, so correct me where necessary. EDMOND BASYE II. (d. ca. 1745) of Wicomico Parish. He was a church warden as were Isaac and William Basye; also Thomas Gaskins, Thomas Gaskins Jr., and Edwin. (Northern Neck History Society, V. 7, No. 1, Dec 1957.) He was one of several sons of Edmond Basye I and his wife Eliza Taylor. He probably was of age ca. 1705 when he bought land from Jas. Knight 20 Nov 1705. (As will be seen from other Basye records of this era, Knight was a close associate of the Basye family.) Northumberland Co. Records 1710-1713 p. 237 - Deed - Edmond Basie, Sr. to Edmond Basie, Jr. p. 239- Deed - Edmond Basie, Jr. to Edmond Basie, Sr. (Carolyn H. Jett, RECORDS OF NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA [Bowie, Md: Heritage Books, Inc, 1994) (Comment: Mrs. Jett's work is an abstracted list of some court records of Northumberland Co.) There is a Josias Basie in N'umberland who was a witness during 1710-1713 to a deed, James Knight, planter, to Richard Neale, gentleman. (Jett) Edmond Basye II apparently left no surviving sons, and at least one of his daughters (unnamed but the mother of William Averitt or Everitt) was deceased by the time he wrote his will. There were surviving daughters, two of whom were married and two unmarried in late 1745. From Record Book of Northumberland County, VA, for 1743-1749, pages 123a-124: "In the Name of God Amen. I, Edmond Basey, of Northumberland County being in my health & perfect sense & memory, thanks be to God for the same, & calling to mind the mortality of my body & knowing that it is appointed for all flesh to die, do appoint, consistute & ordain this to be my last will & Testament & as touching such worldly Good wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with, I give & dispose in the following manner & form: Imprimus. I acknowledge this to be my last will & Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 5 day of Decembr. 1745. Edmond Basye (Seal) "Charles X Sullivant his mark, Thos X Sampson his mark, George Mills" As transcribed by Otto Basye, THE BASYE FAMILY IN THE UNITED STATES, p. 161. "April the 14th, 1746 this will was proved in Northumberland County Court to be the Last Will & Testament of Edmond Basye, Decd., by the Oaths of Charles Sullivant & Thomas Sampson witnesses thereto. The Exts. made oath to the sd. Will on whose the motion the same is admited to Record." (Ibid.) Citing Beverly Fleet, VIRGINIA COLONIAL ABSTRACTS. NORTHUMBRIA COLLECTION 1645-1720, V. 19, Otto Basye notes that Edmond Basye, Sr (I) and Edmond Basye, Jr. (II) were witnesses to wills and deeds. Some of their associates were: Hen. I wrote to the man that sent me the ships list of the Mayflower but have not heard back from him, he either inserted the name of his own will or she was on it. I saw the ships log and some of the passengers I know are the originals, but this document also had Female Oldham. Darn floppy disc that won't open, that has the log on it along with other info that I can't get now. I am writing to see if the National Archives will give me the grave # of Jesse and where exactly it is. I do know that it is listed with them. Would like to see it someday as well as visit Fort Boonesbourough and see the monument that is up with his name on it. If you have anything specific that you need please let me know, I have so much and yet still can't put all the pieces together of the Oldham clan. They could have been original once in awhile and named some of them after someone that was not a sibling or a parent or grandparent. I am going to go thru all my papers and see if by chance I did print out the ships log that was sent to me, if I find it will scan it and send it to you. I was once told by another Oldham researcher that Richard "Ready Money" may have been more well off than his relatives. When his relatives needed assistance, they came to him and he was always ready with the money. Of course, there is no proof to this idea but it's fun to speculate. I appreciate his nick name because it gives him a unique identification that sets him apart from all the other Richards. Sue
Question: Other than Wm. LaBach's website at <A HREF="http://members.tripod.com/~labach/noldhama.htm"> http://members.tripod.com/~labach/noldhama.htm</A> is there is any documentation of the dates cited in your most recent e-mail? Documentation is the keyword when one joins a lineage society. Some ladies have presented to me a torn piece of paper with a scribbled pedigree chart, and when I tell them that is inadequate for a lineage society, they are dismayed. WE have to dig, dig, dig--sometimes for two years, particularly if it is a common name. And, contrary to what one thinks, Oldham is NOT an uncommon name. Particularly if the persons are from Northern Neck Virginia. The name Oldham is very common in the county of Leicester in England. We can guesstimate Jesse Oldham's age because of a deposition he gave to a KY court at about age 75. However, in 1755, in Capt. John Asbhy's company, cited in Bockstruck's Colonial Soldiers of Virginia, he is given the age 21 (he may have been stretching his age). I am particularly interested in the date of birth given for Jesse's wife, Elizabeth Simpson. Who has the family Bible???? Those of you who do colonial research in the South know that for the most part, unless we have a deposition or a military record or a pension record, most dates we come up with for births are pure guesstimates. I was taught that men generally (generalization only) got married after they had acquired land, and one could use a guesstimate of age 26. For a female, it could be any age, of course, after about age 14 or so. Also, another generalization I have made for myself, if a man married subsequent to his first marriage, he either married a widow or a young, poorer girl. Any comments? Another topic: Someone is interested in the numerous Richard Oldhams. In Caswell Co., NC, there were two Richard Oldhams in the early tax lists. One guesstimate is that the one with land was Richard Oldham, the father of Jesse. The younger Richard without the land was Jesse's son. Incidentally, Richard Oldham is a common combination of names. One of the early Northern Neck Land Grants lists Richard Oldham. In and around Madison Co., KY, there were two Richard Oldhams, both of whom got Rev War pensions. There was Richard "Ready-Money" Oldham whose second wife (and widow) was the former Patsy Reid (later of Platte Co., MO), and then there was what some of us Oldham descendants call Richard "Estill" Oldham, who resided in the county of that name. His exact relationship to the Jesse Oldham family has never been clear to me. By the way, the outline given in the first volume of W. H. Miller's History and Genealogies.... of the Oldham family is terribly flawed. He has mixed up the Louisville Oldhams with the Madison Co. Oldhams. The Louisville Oldhams came directly from Virginia. The Madison Co. Oldhams (correct me if I'm wrong) came from Caswell Co., NC. Some were there in the 1760s, as revealed by Orange Co., NC court records. Hello, may I tune in here? I am a descendant of Richard "Ready-Money" Oldham of Madison Co., KY and his first wife (Ursley Duke Williams, the widow Peoples) and as such have been trying to collect off and on (like most genealogists) information on this particular family of Oldhams. I may be able to add some facts and figures about the Oldhams in Madison Co., KY (not all of them--that's overwhelming), and previously of Caswell Co., NC. May I hear from you? E.W.Wallace (female)
