    3. Check the Jefferson County, WV maps. Elk Branch is South of Shepherdstown, near what used to be Darkesville. The Elk Branch Church is there. Hope this helps. 2. Darkesville was - and still is - in Berkeley County, West Virginia. I live in the Darkesville area. Elk Branch may be in Jefferson County, but Darkesville isn't. The nearest streams to Darkesville on the Berkeley County 1847 map are Middle Creek, Buzzard Run and Goose Creek, which all empty into the Opequon, which, in turn empties into the Potomac upstream (west) of Shepherdstown. Shepherdstown is but a few miles from the border between the two counties and before 1801 Jefferson County was part of Berkeley County. Hope this clears up some confusion for you.
