I originally posted the "on the bridge at Harpers Ferry" marriage query. Since that time, I've found the couples' marriage record. It wasn't in Jefferson Co., (W)VA as I suspected. I found it "finally" in Frederick Co., MD. This was Apr. 1858. Can hardly believe that you could legally do this even then. The actual license was taken out in Fred. Co., MD but there is no record of the marriage return. Evidently, there are "no" marriage returns for that era. The clerk just assumed that the couple actually married.
