Hello all: I am trying to identify a family for my great great grandfather, William Sample. His tombstone states he was born 19 March 1789, Loudoun County, Virginia. Research of Loudoun records reveals that a James and Sarah Sample were in the county during the right time frame. Sarah's mother was a Leesburg resident. Although James and Sarah bought a town lot in 1787, they sold it the following year. Sarah apparently died between 1791 and 1794. There is no other available evidence of the Sample residence in the county, neither marriage record, other land conveyance, will, etc. Therefore, I'm beginning to consider possible residence in Frederick Co., which at that time was the adjacent county to the west. During the time frame described above, there was a Sample family in Frederick County. According to Yates Publishing's family group sheet, (referencing DAR Application 314720; DAR History Book no. 141710' amd War Department Pension Records) James Sample was born 1750 at Frederick Co., Virginia, married Sarah Jane 1771 at Frederick Co., and died 1799 at Washington Co. Tennessee. The same family group sheet describes the wife as Sarah Jane, born 1753 in Virginia, died 1830 Washington Co., Tennessee. (The Loudoun Co. Sarah Sample died in the early 1790's) Children were listed as James, b. 1772, Martha, b. 1775, John, Nathaniel, and Sarah, with a note that there may be other children. Does anyone have information relating to James and Sarah of Loudoun Co., or James and Sarah of Frederick Co. I am told "Pioneer Families of Old Frederick County, Va." lists a Samuel Sample as recipient of a Fairfax grant for 400 plus acres in Frederick during the 1750', perhaps James' father or uncle.
