----- Original Message ----- From: Phyll Davis To: Old Frederick Co Co, VA Sent: Monday, July 28, 2003 5:05 PM Subject: Smith Surname - 1750"s I am new to the list. I am looking for information regarding Smith Families listed on the web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vafreder/fredbook.htm Frederick County Fee Book signed by the sheriff Meredith Helm, dated Jan 17, 1754.... Frederick County, VA, Col. James Wood's Fee Book, Anno Dom 1744: Name and # pounds of tobacco: Smith, John ...766 Smith, John the "blacksmith"...55 Smith, George Audley...61 Smith, John Jr...96 and Vance, David...155 Vance, Joseph...150 also: Female Heads of Households in 1753-1754, followed by assessment fee (tobacco) Smith, Margaret...105 pounds The largest assessments were: Smith, John...458 pounds Vance (the cooper)...449 pounds My reason for including the Vance family is this: I can document back to Rockingham Co, Va where William Smith married Christina Sites in 1812. A Vance man was surety for Wm on their marriage bond, and in others searches I have found Vance family members nearby. I am also looking for a David Smith in the same time period as the Frederick Co, VA Smith's. I am certain we all agree that certain surnames are difficult to research and Smith is one of them I NEED YOUR HELP, no matter how slight a clue it could be. I am a direct Smith descendant and I live in Arizona. Phylliss Smith Davis
