Neil- Just wanted to set the record straight on Chalkley's Augusta Co court abstracts for list readers. You are correct in stating that many of the settlers living within current day Hampshire boundaries, which was part of the Fairfax/Northern Neck land grants, are not listed in Augusta county court records because they were in Frederick and later Hampshire County. However, many Hardy, Grant, and Pendleton County names on the southern part of the South Branch of the Potomac, South Fork, Lunice Creek, Patterson Creek, etc. do show up in Chalkley, especially prior to Hampshire becoming a county. So I wouldn't count it out altogether as a source, especially if you have early family living in the southern end of the South Branch, around Moorefield or Petersburg areas. For instance, Michael Harness, who lived on the South Branch in today's Hardy County, is listed in Augusta, Frederick, Orange, Hampshire and Hardy county records. Thanks for the GREAT ad you found in the PA Gazette. That's one of the best things I've read in ages!! Sara Patton
