When I started researching my family I wondered if any of them had been famous doctors, lawyer or politicians, so I started investigating. It appears the Harrolds have only one famous "cousin", cousin David Harrold. Cousin Davey was a druggist in Washington, D.C. during the Civil War, working at a drugstore near the White House. One day President Lincolns doctor came in the store and told Davie that the president was suffering from severe constipation and asked if David could deliver a bottle of caster oil to the White House. "Cousin" Davie had never met the president and so, decided to deliver it himself. He found the largest bottle of caster oil in the store and rushed to Lincolns' aid. The president met him at the door and immediately pulled the cork from the bottle with his teeth and drank several large swallows of the caster oil, wiped his mouth and chin on his coat sleeve and burped loudly. Then he said, "I don't have any money on me but I'll come by and pay you as soon I'm up and running again," Davie said, "Mr. President, if you drink much more of that caster oil, you'll be up and running tonight, All Night Long!" "Cousin" Davie was hanged for his participation in the Lincoln assassination plot. I guess he is my most famous Harrold "cousin"!!! G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
