William Russell owned land on the South Fork of Shenandoah River in Orange co. Va. in 1738. The deeds for this land are found in the Orange county Court up until 1743. William Russell came from Culpeper Va. This area was to the southeast of Frederick co. As Fairfax claimed more of the Northern Neck of Va., many people lost title to their lands and were forced to move further west into Frederick and Augusta County. After the Rev. War, many of these families moved to southwest Va and Kentucky to claim military lands. Capt William Russell moved to southwest Va. by 1770 and was involved in land claims and surveys in Kentucky by 1773-74. William Russell never moved to Kentucky but after his first wife died, married a widow and lived near the salt wells near Saltville, Va. Many of the settlers of Shenandoah Valley came from Lancaster, Prince William, Culpeper and Fauquier Co. Va. The government of Augusta co. began functioning in 1745 and as the Fairfax grant claimed more of Frederick county, adjustments were made in the Augusta/Frederick county line. During the French and Indian Wars, the Quakers of northern Frederick co. started moving south to what was then, western NC, because they did not believe in fighting and killing in war.. this list includes, Boones, Bryans, Harrolds, Mills and many other families, however many of the Presbyterians of Frederick/Augusta counties moved to Fincastle county, Va. and from there to Ky. James Patton establised a settlement of people from Augusta co. on the New River near Blacksburg, Va. about 1750. This settlement suffered many Indian attacks and some people left for their safety.. Patton was killed by Indians there but the settlement survived and many of the next generation moved on westward to Ky., TN and Indiana... G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
