    1. Re: Settlers from New Jersey to Old Frederick County

    3. Bob Scott: Many of the first settlers in Old Frederick County (VA) came from Monmouth County, Province of East Jersey. Benjamin Bordin (1692-1743) came to Frederick County to serve as a land agent for Lord Fairfax. Although he settled in what is now Clarke County, he was one of the first to purchase land on Apple Pie Ridge from Alexander Ross/ Morgan Bryan. As you may know, the Bordins were very active citizens and well-known in their hometown of Freehold, New Jersey. Also, from Freehold, NJ were the Foremans who settled in Hampshire Parish, which later became Hampshire County, (WV). Benjamin Foreman (1695-1751) held several political appointments in Old Frederick, including constable and justice of the peace. My research on the Foreman family is extensive, in case someone is researching that surname, let me know. Originally English, the Foreman family spent a brief period in Holland before settling on Long Island (NY) in 1645, and Benjamin's father came to East Jersey in 1690. John Van Meter (1682-1745) came from New York to Somerset County, Province of East Jersey, in 1689. It was during this period that settlers in New York moved into the Jerseys and later, in the 1730s, to Old Frederick County. These people were instrumental in attracting settlers to "Old Frederick County." While looking through Monmouth County records, I saw many surnames that unmistakeably came to Old Frederick. For example, Benjamin Hull, Cornelius Vanorsdale, and other surnames such as Higgins, Royce, Taylor, Ruckman, Davis, Allen and so forth. There was definitely a pattern or movement of settlers from New York to the Jerseys during the late 1600s and ultimately to the Shenandoah Valley during the 1730s and early 1740s. Wilmer L.
